Does Anyone Else Find Elf on the Shelf Creepy?

Let me preface this by saying, I hate on Elf on the Shelf.

It’s the worst.

The literal worst.

It is a horrible idea.

I mean, in the grand scheme of things Santa Claus could fall into the same category. Elf on the Shelf and Santa Claus are essentially ways to keep kids behaving well during the stressful holiday season when parents are reaching their limits.

However, telling a child to be good because Santa is watching, I can live with overall.

Elf on the Shelf, not so much.

The doll itself is this creepy looking thing that might be related to Chucky.

Every single time I see this doll, it gives me the creeps. Seriously, has anyone taken a long look at the thing? It’s scary looking.

If I was a kid, I’d think the doll was after me to kill me and steal my soul!

No, I do not recommend.

Then – then there is the whole idea behind it, doesn’t help me like it any more. This idea the Elf is trying to get kids in trouble to put them on the naughty list.

Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of Santa knowing everything? Doesn’t he see his elves are causing trouble?

Why would he send an Elf to get you in trouble? Why would the Elf want that? To have to make less toys?

Is this some scheme from the elves to get out of building toys?

They’re so tired of toy making year after year, that they’ve gone rogue? What is happening in the North Pole?

I have questions.

Not to mention this is a toy, children are not allowed to engage with as one of the rules, is that you cannot touch them.

Also, side note: Doesn’t this make more work for parents who have to move the Elf around every single night and cause more chaos?

Like I’m tired thinking about it. I have a hard enough time getting the Christmas decorations up, but once they’re there they stay until January because I am a busy person. Life has a way of getting in the way and this seems like a sure fire to prove to kids if you forget to move it, that you’re lying to them.

I do not like the idea that Santa sends spies to watch the kids, night and day and those spies cause the trouble.

What kind of message are we hoping to send to children?

Someone will be spying on you, that spy will attempt to get you into trouble themselves, and report the mischief back to Santa who is also spying on you and should know you haven’t done anything wrong but I don’t the mythos is confusing kid.

I’m just trying to make it to December 26th without losing my mind kid! Cut me some slack.

Is that the message?

Just be good so mom and dad can have five minutes of peace during this chaotic season.

I don’t know.

Either way, I am not a fan of Elf on the Shelf.

It may also be in part of walking through stores and seeing piles upon piles of these things just stacked everywhere while parents desperately try to find on that matches the one they lost so the child doesn’t notice.

I’m sorry. Doesn’t notice what?

That these things don’t actually come from the North Pole?

Do you just not take your children to the store during the months of November and December? Do you cover their eyes while they’re in the store so they can’t see Elf on the Shelf being sold by the boatloads? I mean, what lie do I have to concoct to make that work?

No, dear. They don’t come from the North Pole. Haven’t you ever noticed the ‘made in China’ stamped on it somewhere?

Seriously, children are not that stupid.

Or the parents who let their kids pick out the Elf.

Umm…

Does the kid never ask why he came from Walmart instead of Santa’s workshop? What do you say? Walmart is in on it with Santa?

I did that once. I worked in a store where we sold these things. I pretended to be Santa’s helper when a mother got into a sticky situation with her child wondering why they were here and not up north.

Don’t get me wrong, I will be the first to help keep the secret in any situation because I think children deserve the magic and joy that come with this time of year.

I will never be the one to ruin it.

I just think Elf on the Shelf does that anyway with it’s creepiness.

I suppose that moment made me wonder – what do children really think about Elf on the Shelf?

My parents thought it was a creepy idea and never did it with me so I have no reference as a kid. Just an adult looking at it and thinking, man that thing is so weird.

Anyway, thanks for reading! I hope it made you laugh or chuckle or look at the world a bit differently. Either way, thank you!

If you would also be so kind as to help me out this holiday season with my bills I would appreciate it if you could drop a tip in my Ko-Fi fund. Every dollar goes a long way.

Thank you and spread the love!
