I’ll admit right now, Waverly and Nicole are the only reason I started watching Wynonna Earp.
Season one had already come to an end and I saw these two keep popping up on Tumblr. I couldn’t resist checking the two of them out. I watched a few clips of them and had to watch the show.
Of course, now I’m hooked on the show as well. My kitten’s name is Wynonna!
Their first scene together set everything in motion for me. The very moment Nicole started flirting, knowing exactly what she wanted, and being super polite, I loved them.
Especially, “A boy-man? I’ve been there. It’s the worst.”
The delivery of that line made me laugh.
Nicole’s smooth flirting, comfort and confidence in herself, and her will to back off, never go too far made me love this character and the writing.
Too often in stories the lesbian or gay characters are made to seem predatory. Nicole was nothing like that. She was polite, well spoken, and seemed safe to the audience but to Waverly as well. Something calm and steady to lean into.
Now, I loved Alex’s coming out on Supergirl but I also loved Waverly’s because it was done in a different light. Everyone is different, everyone’s coming out is going to be different.
Waverly’s was good because upon her realization, she hesitated briefly before she threw herself into this newfound discovery. It was fun watching Waverly indulge herself. Find something just for herself.
In season two Waverly and Nicole had more then a few bumps, including a severe lack of communication between the two. But they’ve come out on the other side, hopefully season three will give them a chance to discuss their hiccups and work through them.
Honestly, I don’t have a lot of complaints about their bumps in season two. Over the course of watching the show I know a lot of people were upset by the cheating, the wife, and not getting a chance for them to talk through their problems. However, I loved it. They were being treated like every other main couple would.
They had drama.
Issues.
Past problems that were never discussed.
A wife that wasn’t mentioned.
A kiss that should never have happened.
And a lie.
They had a lot going on from beginning to end in season two. Keeping Nicole from Black Badge to a illicit kiss to a hidden wife.
Truthfully, I loved all of it looking back on it.
Waverly and Nicole were treated like any other couple on TV. They had ups and downs. Good moments, bad moments. But because we know they’re meant to end up together, we can get through them. They make the ride more fun, more enjoyable.

From the very moment I watched their first meeting to their first kiss to their first fight to their first time Waverly and Nicole have been one of my favorite couples.
One of my favorite moments was Waverly walking into the Sheriff’s station, pulling Nicole into the office, shutting the blinds, and just planting one on her. I admired Waverly’s boldness in taking what she wants. Something I myself struggle with, but I’m getting better. Sometimes, it’s such a big help to find a character to relate to that does things you wish you could.
Also, I loved Nicole’s cool confidence in herself.
I must also admit I loved Nicole’s irritation with Champ. Every mention, every inkling of his presence in Waverly’s life annoyed her. With good reason.
He didn’t deserve Waverly.
I’m not certain Nicole believes she’s good enough for Waverly but she strives to be the best version of herself every chance she gets.
My favorite couples are those who help make each other better. Not by anything direct. Not by forcing them to change into their ideal partner. But by inspiring them to be better.
Meeting Nicole, Wynonna returning to Purgatory sparked a change in Waverly.
Clearly, Wynonna was not the fondest of Champ, wanted better for her sister but would deal with him on her sister’s behalf. As long as that’s what Waverly wanted. But Wynonna wouldn’t push her sister.
Nicole on the other hand represented risk.
A chance to take something she wants.
Something that scares her.
She’s lived in a small town her whole life. Most people grow up, live lives like their parents. Grow up, get married, have kids, and start the cycle again.
Live safe little lives.
Settle.
Champ would be that route. But with Wynonna’s return, her determination to break the curse, things started to change.
Maybe she didn’t have to settle.
Maybe she could take the leap.
So she does.
It makes Waverly’s life better. It makes Nicole’s life better.
I love that.
My hope for season three is that Waverly and Nicole finally have some kind of moment or at least we find out there was a conversation about all the drama from season two. I love couples who actually work through their issues together. It would be nice to see the two of them doing so.
So those are my thoughts on Wayhaught! Let me know what you think!
Read on and spread the love!
