Happy Friday the 13th!
How many people are yelling at me for pointing it out?
Sorry, but 13 has been my lucky number since I was little. And I thought I would give a little background on the unlucky day.
Also, get ready because this is not the last one we’ll have this year. In fact, we’re due for another one in July. In case you weren’t paying attention it will fall exactly on Friday, July 13th, 2018. It’ll start at midnight, 12 AM, and end at 12 AM on July 14th, 2018.
I’m sure no out there is appreciating the sarcasm as much as I am.
Friday the 13th was not always known as an unlucky day. Before the 19th century there is nothing to suggest people believed they were.
Fun fact: Before Friday the 13th was considered a truly unlucky day, Fridays themselves were also considered unlucky.
I’m certain there’s a bit of irony in there somewhere since all anyone does these days is pray for Friday to get here faster. And when it finally does arrive shout TGIF from the rooftops. Only to bemoan it’s loss once Monday rolls around again. Could you imagine an unlucky day every week? And the day being the one you’re supposed to look forward to every week?
Oops. I think Monday took over.
The superstition surrounding Friday the 13th seems to have stemmed from somewhere in the middle ages. It centers around ‘The Last Supper’ since their are 13 individuals depicted, among other examples of the number in relation, and his death on Good Friday.
Please don’t make me get into the specifics. I am not a biblical person and I promise I will not be able to do it justify without proper research. I recommend more reading up, if you wish.
As for other examples that may have added to the superstition was a novel written in 1907 Friday, the Thirteenth. A broker takes advantage of the superstition surrounding the day to cause a panic on Wall Street.
Another suggested origin of the day is October 13th, 1307 when King Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar.
In a twist Spanish speaking countries believe Tuesday the 13th is unlucky. The Greeks who consider Tuesday an unlucky day believe the 13th is the worst.
Guess everyone has a different view on unlucky times!
Although, 13 seems to be pretty definitive when it comes to bad luck.
