I have found a new web series!

Here’s where I’m going to say the most controversial thing. Ever.

I’m not a big fan of the Thai GL series.

There! I said it! Don’t hurt me!

I’ve tried several times to get into them, but I just can’t. I don’t know why. Because I do love a good web series. If you’ve been following me on here for any length of time, you’ll see at least two have notable review series. I’ve mentioned several others over time.

I’ve tried watching so many. So many. And I want to like them. I want it so much because they cover all the common tropes but with woman. I mean, like last year there was a bodyguard one. I mean, come on! This stuff is tailor made to me.

However, I’m not sure what about them just doesn’t hit for me.

With that being said, I’m going to tell you the honest truth – I watched Blank the Series – and I pretty much hated it. I never wrote a review up on it because I just thought, well, I’ll piss everyone off, and I don’t have anything nice to really say. Instead, I just let it go.

But!

I did like one thing – to be honest.

And that was the lead actress, Faye Malisorn.

She was the only true highlight of the series for me, anyway. Thus, when just a few days ago Tumblr supplied me with fresh gifs of her latest series after whatever happened with Ninestar – I had to check it out. And I was hoping against hope that the other lead actress was not the lead from Blank.

Because no.

Chemistry or not, she looks like she’s five compared to Faye, and it creeped me out. I’m sorry. If you like it, way to go! Enjoy. Not here to rain on your parade. I’m just explaining why I do not like it.

I looked up the trailer and some more gifs on Tumblr. I thought, well, I’ll try another series. Why not?

One day! One day! There will a series I like from this endless batch and I will find it. Much to the amusement of my girlfriend who wonders endlessly why I torture myself.

Thus, I pulled up a chair and watched the first episode of Broken (of) Love. Trying desperately not to let the title bother me. I was like, I dealt with the title Stupid Wife. This cannot be worse.

And lo and behold, I’ve found a GL series from Thailand I actually really like!

While I am certain there are things to knock about the show and that I know people are knocking on the show for various reasons, I simply do not care about any of them. This series is good.

Pacing? Money? Whatever?

I don’t care.

I like the characters. They’re messy!

Arisa and Lyra? Which confuses me because I could have sworn she was tagged as Lalin on Tumblr. But then it was explained away as she’s been hiding all these years because Mom is rich. Either way, these women are freaking messes.

Albeit, in different ways.

Lalin is a scatter-brained musician who doesn’t really seem to need money for whatever reason, though has some sort of past complications. Surrounding… Mom, I think it was.

So scatter brained she did not wash her hands.

I don’t care how romantic the moment was! Wash your freaking hands. Because now, you, your friend, and Arisa need to wash their hands and sterilize the piano. Least sexy thing to happen in the entire episode.

I know you were distracted by the gorgeous woman giving you some pretty sound advice but basic cleanliness is hot. I promise. Take a moment next time and wash your hands.

Arisa appears to have no idea how to handle romance by any measure. Her business? Whatever that may be. She’s got that. Her friend/employee? She’s got it.

Being randomly flirted and dragged onto the dance floor? Nope. Don’t got that.

Give advice to random strangers in the bathroom while they’re peeing and bemoaning their life? She’s got that.

Trying to look casual outside the club while waiting for the intriguing woman to find her so they could talk more? Nope. Doesn’t have that. Nor does she have any clue what to do with her emotions the second they scare the crap out of her.

So she hightails it out of there.

Despite the fortune cookies that appear to be haunting her.

Or the girl stalking her.

Lalin’s lucky she didn’t call the police on her.

These two feel like real people. Messy people getting in over their heads from time to time. Arisa with feelings. Lalin getting into that car.

She should not have gotten into the car.

Although… I suppose I understand the urge as well. To want someone so badly that you’d do almost anything to convince them for a chance. A moment to prove they should pick you.

The bit of them sharing the loneliness together was so sweet. The montage as the relationship developed over three months together.

Which I really enjoyed. We didn’t need more than the montage to tell us they were falling in love. The little discussion where they make it official and Arisa wants Lalin to stay in her arms forever is perfect.

Because it gives way to understanding that Lalin is more than revenge to Arisa.

She met her completely separate to whatever grudge she has against her business rival. Because she was genuinely shocked to see Lalin at the auction. As was Lalin.

I’m sure that’s going to go over well.

But the trailer suggested that Arisa is using Lalin to get closer to her rival and happens to fall in love with her. Except, their relationship starts before the knowledge of their mother-daughter relationship.

Unless Arisa felt the urge to act for the audience’s sake about her shock.

While her plan may have been set in motion before that to destroy her rival. It fully appears that Lalin was not meant to be part of it. Just a ridiculous coincidence that I’m sure when this all blows up in Arisa’s face – no one will believe.

Other things I loved about this episode!

Aiy getting into the wrong car and the wonderful woman behind the wheel taking her home anyway because ‘women help women.’ Such a good thing to live life by. Right, ladies?

Aiy tricking Arisa into going out so she could pay for drinks.

Arisa trying to convince her uncle that Lalin was just a friend after he caught her staring longingly at pictures of Lalin on her computer. Right, sure Jan.

Pretty sure he didn’t buy it.

Arisa just straight dropping 30 million to shove it in her business rivals face.

Thought it was a bit foolish of Arisa to tip her hand to Weilling so soon. She put her on guard before she needed to. I would have stuck with the adoring inspiration angle she started with. However, I love this, because it proves that Arisa is still human and capable of making missteps. Despite how long she has been planning this, she can still make mistakes. Love it.

I love her suggestion of taking people down with strategy instead of brute force.

I love that she drives a race car, seemingly for the pleasure of it since it appears to have nothing to do with her actual business. She just bought an entire racetrack because she’s that extra.

It’s so weird how the assistants just follow their bosses around like little puppies on a leash but also sort of amusing in a way I cannot explain.

The music and sound effects enhance the experience of the moment rather than taking away from it more often than not.

The actress playing the business rival and the mother of Lalin is freaking fantastic. In these shows, sometimes the other people tend to be flatter than the main characters. But she feels intentional in her crafted facade. There’s more to her beneath it, but she’s tucked it away from people.

But we get to see glimpses of it. Like when she wants her daughter to return home or she proudly presents her to everyone. It gives her depth, instead of feeling like a complete and utter villain. She feels human. Layered. Interesting. Complex.

I cannot commend this series enough for finally getting me on board. It does so many things right for me to make it my kind of interesting that I have not found in other GL Thai series. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Especially, with at least part of the truth on the table.

Lyra is really Lalin, daughter of Arisa’s business rival, and the woman she hates most in the world. This ought to be interesting for the couple to try and reconcile.

Onto the next episode. Anyone got popcorn?
