Okay, okay, okay.
Let me get this straight.
Keyleth is an Air Ashari and there are four of them total. She must visit each one in order to pass her overall test – the Aramente. Am I getting that right?
I did not put that together until this episode.
Like I knew she was on sort of spiritual journey to lead her people, but I didn’t realize it had specific destinations for her to reach or powers for her to achieve. Kind of feels like Avatar: The Last Airbender.
I also have another question – does passing her Aramente mean she’s in charge of all four Ashari or does she just rule the Air Ashar?
I’m not clear on that one.
What I am clear on, is this episode choosing to focus heavily on Keyleth and her past. Which includes learning about her mother, who appears to have disappeared on her own Aramente – never to return. Which is unfortunate given that she promised Keyleth she would be back.
Except she doesn’t.
She needs the Mighty Nein for that.
But that’s another story.
I think this has shaped the way Keyleth looks at things about this journey she’s on. She might believe that if her mother was not strong enough to complete it – how can she?
Will she become lost as well?
Except, Keyleth is a lot stronger and more powerful than she gives herself credit for.
During season one, she hesitated to use her power. Feeling inferior or unhelpful to the group. Unsure of herself at every step and turn. Until one day, she stopped second-guessing herself, reached deep within herself, and turned the tides in Vox Machina’s direction.
When she lets herself believe, she can do something – she can.
However, the opposite is also true.
When she believes herself incapable, she becomes her own worst enemy. Causing doubt and problems she had while trying to help with the rift between planes. She did not think she could succeed, so she could not.
Except when she believed she could do it.
That she could calm herself enough to understand that the fire was also part of her, that she is strong enough to withstand even the fire plane, she was able to overcome it.
And become, well, whatever the hell that was.
Living fire god or something?
Keyleth is truly an impressive member of the group who does not give herself enough credit. I don’t think anyone truly gives her enough credit.
It’s so easy to doubt her or dismiss her. She seems far too innocent and sweet to be allowed out into the world. Except for those moments when she unleashes her power or her understanding on the situation, suddenly making her a force to be reckoned with.
Her utter anger and sadness over what happened to Pyrah.
The fact that she didn’t care what anyone else did. They needed her help and she was going to help them. Whether or not Vox Machina approved.
Keyleth is sort of fascinating to me.
You could dismiss her. See her as nothing more than a naive girl who hasn’t truly lived yet. Or you could see the fire and spirit and knowledge she has accumulated over the years with what she has seen. Sure, there’s more for her to learn. There’s always more for people to learn.
But I love the random bits of backbone we get.
I love that she’s fiery underneath it all.
She’s smart and maybe a little naive here and there but overall, she’s incredibly talented and brilliant.
I don’t think anyone should underestimate her. Clearly, Vex did not. While she spent a good chunk of season one bothering Keyleth, she also spent a good chunk of the same season needling her into accepting and embracing her power.
I think Vax sees how strong she is mentally.
While Vex sees her raw power.
It’s an interesting dynamic.
I look forward to digging deeper into Keyleth’s story as she has completed one piece of her Aramente now.
I also loved the moment between her and Vax after she was honored.
Next, funnily enough, I did not think Vox Machina thought Kima and Allura were dead. It kind of slipped my mind that they never actually saw what happened to them in the capital when the dragons attacked. I also was not worried because I knew both of them appear in campaign two.
In my mind, these two things went together.
Oh, Vox Machina must know they’re alive since they’re going to do stuff later.
Except, that’s not how that works and I was surprised that they were surprised to see them. I mean, I was surprised they were in Pyrah of all places, but not that they were alive.
My bad.
I’m starting to mix everything together in my head. Oops.
It was nice to Kima and Allura and discover that these two sort of had something to do with the dragons. They locked the big bad one up in the fire plane. Except he’s escaped.
You think?
With all sorts of power and he left the rift open.
We’ve got people round the clock trying to keep it from getting any bigger, but things are slipping through regardless and attacking the city below.
I feel like that’s a good reason not to be a city at the base of a volcano where there’s a potential rift to another plane filled with fire. I mean, I get that the point is for them to protect it and keep it closed.
But hey, we’ve definitely failed on one of those parts.
And we let two people use it as a cage for a dragon who has now escaped and is truly pissed at us.
Again, maybe not the best place to raise a family or have a community. Maybe just an outpost and we live a bit further away and we can call for help if we need it.
I’ve seen these people speak through mirrors and minds, I’m sure we could contact people, and get there in a hurry. You know, without cooking the village.
Is that just me?
Elsewhere, an entire city has just fucking disappeared. Um, to where? How? And WHAT?
How do you lose a city?
Though apparently, it happened.
The lady from season one, the doctor, she’s back, and teaming up with the dragons. Great.
I know it was important that Percy not kill her last season to save his soul and all that. But I do think we should have let him have that one. Or maybe someone else. I don’t think we should have just let her walk away. I thought she might come back to be a problem and I was right.
I really wanted to be wrong.
Vax and Keyleth have crushes on each other.
Keyleth’s dad is pretty cool.
Vex and Scanlan figure out the broom can fly. Finally! But now Vex owes Scanlan a favor since she’s so mature now. I’m sure that won’t come back to bit her. Not at all.
Grog! You need to get rid of that freaking sword! It is going to be the death of you or someone in Vox Machina. Not good.
Maybe throw it into the lava.
I also do not like that it’s not stated by just killing any beings or the threat that it will go after someone if it does not feed it. I’m telling you, the sword is no good. In fact, if a sword starts muttering and making demands for blood, best leave it where it is.
In Westruun we’ve got a bunch of creatures tearing the place apart looking for gold to give to the dragons. Apparently at the dragons’ behest. They’ve made some sort of deal and at least one of the creatures does not seem pleased with this arrangement. Promising that this is right now.
Though the dragon claims forever.
I’m not sure, but I don’t think making a pact with a dragon is going to yield any of the results you want.
Especially not with the Chroma Conclave.
Still an awesome name though. Well, onto the next episode!
