Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Keyleth nearly dies. Healing potion doesn’t appear to have any effect and Percy, well he’s decided she’s dead already. I really hope that’s the demon talking and not him.
Because suddenly, Percy is no longer on our side.
Instead, he’s being controlled by the demon Orthax who is hellbent on killing Deliah so that he may have souls. Percy’s, hers, anyone, and everyone. Every time it appears that Percy has killed someone, he gifts the soul to Orthax.
Who is now powerful enough to overtake Percy.
Despite Percy clearly trying to fight him off.
The tears roll down his cheeks as he tries to stop him from shooting Vex. Another little bit of foreshadowing done so well there. Alluding to their future importance to each other that is just now budding.
While this is starting to unfold, Vax saves Keyleth’s life using the same spell she did to save Cassandra in another episode.
Keyleth comes back just in time to inform everyone that Percy could be lost forever if they don’t stop the demon.
Once again, I have a moment where I wonder if poor Vox Machina has had a break or if they’ve just been going at it for days. I wonder if any of them have stopped to take a leak recently.
I mean, Caleb did pee quite often early in campaign two before it was just assumed people took care of their bodily functions as characters. We didn’t need to say everything.
Here, though Vox Machina just went through one wringer right into another.
Except this time, the person on the other side is a friend they don’t want to kill.
So how do they separate him from this demon who has been feeding on Percy probably longer than any of them have realized.
I loved the little switches between what Vox Machina is seeing vs what Percy is seeing.
Percy genuinely thinks he’s taking on his enemies. Though he is only fighting them in his mind. In reality, he’s taking shots at his friends while this demon puts their names on his gun.
This was something I had wondered about before. Could Vox Machina find themselves on the revenge list? And what would happen if they did?
I didn’t think there would be someone else controlling Percy’s body when it happened. I thought it might happen while he was still conscious of the world around him. Enough to notice the names and feel conflicted or torn or realize that this demon is no friend to him.
It would have been an interesting plot to play with.
Not that I dislike this. My mind just chose another path.
Here, however, Percy thinks he’s taking revenge on those who killed his family. Little does he know, he’s actually attempting to kill the people who just helped him avenge his family.
The fight is amazingly done.
I love that Vox Machina keeps trying to break through to Percy the entire time.
And I love that Vex is the one who is truly successful.
I said it before that they have a strong bond, but I couldn’t really understand what it was between them. Besides the obvious attraction and feelings.
I think it’s the fact that they keep each other somewhat honest. They have no fear of calling each other on their bullshit and seeing right through whatever ruse they’ve put up today. There’s a lack of judgment between them. Even at their darkest moments, they don’t judge each other. They’ve been there too.
They recognize that within each other.
They respect it.
They understand what has brought each of them to this moment. They are no saints, but they’re not villains either. Just survivors trying their best to make their way in the world.
It’s a lovely and different connection.
Which again what annoys me about the what if of Keyleth and Vex.
Normally, my what ifs come from a place of boredom or just to toy with the idea in my head without any seriousness. But I’m not bored with the pairings!
I think Percy and Vex complement each other so well.
Vax appears to have found someone outside his family that he can share a deep and profound connection with. Even though it amounted to nothing with them deciding to remain friends. The angst of the moment and knowing that they’ll probably end up together anyway softens the blow.
So it annoys me, because I’m like they’ve got great chemistry too!
These actors need to stop being so talented.
Maybe that’ll help.
One thing I love about D&D is that actions have consequences. Every action comes with a reaction, good or bad. Something happens.
It’s much like life itself in a controlled and fun environment.
Which means that Percy nearly handed over his soul to a demon and his consequence of choosing to do the right thing meant he shot his own hand off to save his friends.
He’s come a long way from the guy stewing over his revenge while others slept.
He chooses them over his hatred and that’s a big step for him.
I must also thank Scanlan for assuming the gun was still a bad thing and not allowing Percy to have it. Despite his claims that it is simply a fine piece of craftsman ship he did not want to discard so easily. Which I genuinely think he meant, by the way.
Only for Scanlan to refuse, chuck it into the acid, and we watched Orthax die yet again.
Way to go Scanlan, you saved everyone once more!
Words I did not think I would type when I started the series mind you.
Scanlan, you have grown on me.
I love that Cassandra ended up being the one to kill Deliah after everything she put her and her family through. It became a big no, no for Percy to do it, but no one said that Cassandra couldn’t do it.
Thus, the wicked witch is dead.
Although, if you know the story, that’s not quite true, is it?
Which I think is perfectly fitting for Deliah who will be back many times like a bad penny. I’m not sure what it will take to get rid of her since her powers literally derive from death. But she is still suffering regardless without Sylas, so that’s something.
Unlike the Wicked Witch who isn’t actually evil.
Deliah for sure is.
Everyone leaves and we meet up with everyone else by the Sun Tree.
No one saw Ripley. Of course. I’m not surprised at all. Not in the least.
I’m sure, like Deliah she’ll be back. Which probably also won’t be a fun time for Vox Machina.
Cassandra is named the leader of Whitestone since Percy wants to continue traveling with his friends. Which is good, otherwise we’d need a new character sheet.
Oh, and a holy man is sent to investigate the weird spinning orb which is a whole lot more deadly than it looks!
It literally sucks the guy into it, ripping him apart.
Note to self, don’t be a Travis and touch anything without first properly identifying what in the world it is.
Deliah mentioned The Whispered One would do some evil stuff to the world. I wonder if the tear is big enough to let them through. Or let more problems through.
You know?
None of this seems good.
Deliah has been stopped and Whitestone reclaimed, but we have no idea what she managed to accomplish down there, nor do we know if The Whispered One is still trapped. What they way. There are still way too many unknowns.
However, even with someone being ripped to shreds, although to be fair Vox Machina didn’t know about that before leaving through a tree. Yep, a tree. Keyleth can transport people once a day through a tree as long as she knows the tree on the other end.
I wonder if she’s on a first name basis with the trees.
Though she’s hesitant initially, Vex tells her she’s got this.
Seriously? How am I not supposed to ship them? It’s right there!
They head through the tree and apparently never get word or simply do not care about the spinning orb of death left behind on the altar. Instead, they hang out in their digs gifted to them earlier in the series.
Percy makes himself a new hand and weapons.
Scanlan sings new songs about their adventures.
Grog probably drinks too much.
Then they’re all summoned to hear an announcement. The Sovreign has realized he was under Sylas’ control and that wasn’t a good thing. He put them all in jeopardy because he was the sole person in charge without checks and balances. If there were a series of people to decide the fate of Emon, then they would be safer.
Said no one with power ever.
It’s how you know it’s a fantasy world.
Thus, he decides to hand his power over to the council. It’s a shocking turn that clearly none of the citizens saw coming, but we barely get two seconds to think over the implications of that choice before Vex nearly drops to the ground in pain.
Remember her ability to sense dragons from episode one?
Well, it’s been kicked into high gear because there are four freaking dragons headed there way.
Maybe the one they killed in the first episode was their brother or something and now they’re coming for revenge. I wonder if the dragon they face in there somewhere is the mate of a dragon, we meet in campaign two. One who hates humans because they killed her mate.
Which fair.
It’s also the same fight where Jester uses ‘heal’ for the first time, I believe, on Fjord to save his life by healing him 80 points. To which a shocked Travis says she really loves him. Whether he is referring to himself, Fjord, or both is unclear. However, I think we as fans can say it was both.
Overall, this is a wonderful episode with a hell of a cliffhanger which Matt is extraordinarily and annoyingly good at. Like even when I know there’s another four-hour episode to watch, I groan just as much as the cast does when he says, ‘and that’s where we’ll pick it up next week.’
I’m telling you these people are just crazy talented!
I cannot wait to see what comes next! Although, I will be waiting.
With The Mighty Nein series dropping, I will be pausing this review series to review season one. The Mighty Nein hold a special place in my heart, and I cannot wait to share my thoughts on the series. Immediately after season one of The Mighty Nein, I will return to The Legend of Vox Machina to continue my watch through and reviews.
I hope you’ll all join me for them! As always, I thank you for reading! Please leave a like, comment, and subscribe!
