The Legend of Vox Machina: 1×11 – Review

OHHHHHHH!!!

We’re in the fight now!

Everything about this episode is amazing.

The down and nearly out Vox Machina as they give everything they have and realize it still might not be enough to save the day.

Vex and Vax’s showdown.

Cassandra and Percy’s showdown.

Deliah muting Scanlan. Could have used that one in earlier episodes, Deliah. Alas, now I’m irritated because it means he can no longer cast spells.

Pike shorting out the entire fight and then disappearing right at the worst moment. (Failed concentration roll?)

Keyleth taking that one for Vex.

Deliah screaming that she broke the world for her husband. Which damn! That’s a nice line.

Since Deliah would have been played by Matt Mercer, I must send compliments to him over his wonderful writing when it comes to villains. I don’t have to like Deliah in the slightest, but I can easily see how she became what she is. She did everything she could in the name of her husband. To keep him at her side.

I don’t like her or her methods. I do – however – understand where she’s coming from.

I would… I’d break the world too for the ones I love.

Can’t fault her on motive. Just everything else.

Jumping back really quick as well, does anyone else think it should be Keyleth and Vex? Not Keyleth and Vax? It’s sort of annoying to me, because I really like Keyleth with Vax. That’s a solid and interesting couple you would not expect and it works.

On the other hand, I think it works with Vex too.

Maybe even more so with them playing into how much shit Vex has given Keyleth about her getting her shit together since the start of the series. Vex also called out for Keyleth to help them most of the battle when they were getting their asses handed to them.

Vex believes she’s capable, even if she doesn’t say it out loud.

Making the moment where Keyleth tosses herself in front of Vex all the more moving.

It could also work in favor of her relationship to Vax, given she knows how close they are. She wouldn’t want anything to happen that would cause him pain. I get that too.

I’m just a sucker for women loving women every time.

It’s like Atypical all over again when the boyfriend doesn’t suck and I think either of them would be a good match for Casey, gah, don’t make me choose.

Alas, I know the choice is Vax.

But guys, come on, stop dangling the chemistry right there if you’re not going to give me the pay off!

Especially with Marisha and Laura voicing these characters. Ah. That’s a good combination right there.

I do love the easy chemistry between the cast members. Where swapping one person out equals for just as great chemistry and interesting dynamics as any other pairing.

Like with Scanlan and Pike.

Those are not two characters I saw together in any way shape or form, but Ashley and Sam make it work in such an earnest way. A way, I did not think Scanlan capable of.

Sam – yes.

For all his jokes and goofing around, Sam Riegal is another amazing storyteller in the cast, and he never ceases to amaze me. Even though Scanlan annoyed me for a handful of episodes, he somehow convinced me to like him. With his standalone episode where he creates a distraction proved that he’s more than just a flirt.

He loves his friends.

Keyleth came out the rockstar of the episode.

Even though she got tossed around like a ragdoll she managed to climb to her feet and deal some serious damage. She actually managed to end Sylas once and for all. Despite his claim over there not being enough sun.

I loved that she was worried about Grog in that moment.

And Grog, well, he’s exactly what I said in my previous review. He’s all heart.

Sure, he’s a little dense. But he’s got a heart of gold and is always willing to take one for the team. I loved his second square off with Sylas as well. He was ready for this fight in a way he wasn’t before.

And I think he took Sylas’ blade. I feel like we should have left that behind. Don’t know why. But making a point of the sword, makes me feel like there’s something else behind the sword we should be worried about. It was wielded by a really bad guy after all.

Maybe it’ll be liked the cursed blade Veth had in campaign too. The one Jester noticed her acting incredibly funny over and found out what it was before Veth got herself killed with the thing.

Anyway, Keyleth offs the vampire to Deliah’s horror.

We manage to get Cassandra back from Sylas’ control, which is good because she doesn’t actually want to murder her brother. We were able to see that in moments when Percy broke through to her. Which I’m glad for.

Percy needed a win.

Or good news after so much bad.

Seriously, have these people slept? How many days has it been since they arrived in Whitestone? One? Two? Three? Have they eaten?

I’m so conditioned by watching them play the campaigns where sleep is always so important for them to heal and get spell slots back. I keep wondering when they’re going to run out of juice. Then I remember this is a cartoon now. They’re going to be a bit more liberal with the mechanics of the game.

Next, we head after Deliah who continues to try and summon The Whispered One either to keep their deal or get Sylas back as part of their original deal. I’m not sure.

It felt like Deliah wanted Sylas back because that was her half of the deal and it didn’t matter that The Whispered One already gave him back once. It was their deal forever. That Sylas could never leave her alone, alive. I don’t know, that’s just how the moment felt to me.

But I doubt the evil entity she serves cares.

She gave her Sylas. The fact that she lost him again is on Deliah, not The Whispered One.

Usually the villain vibe.

But hey, maybe this is a generous evil spirit?

Or spinning black orb?

Is that The Whispered One? Or a effed up version because the ritual didn’t go correctly because Vox Machina intervened and caused problems?

I’m not sure.

Maybe it goes with what I said before, that rushing rituals, and not having the right ingredients at the right time means something went wrong. I didn’t think spinning black orb, just chilling in the center of this horrible altar was going to be the result.

I was thinking more along the lines of a giant crater in the ground.

Everyone dying.

More zombies.

That type of thing.

I also want to talk about Ripley who fled as soon as the opportunity presented itself. No surprise there. And considering how awful things went right after that, Percy probably could have shot her and saved them some future trouble.

Because you know she’s going to be future trouble.

Matt wasn’t going to let an NPC like that just disappear without ever bringing them back. No, no, no, no.

He’s got plans.

Also, I loved how Percy is steadily losing control over the demon as he gets further along. Clearly, however the deal between them works, the demon is gaining more power the longer it goes on. Or with everyone he kills.

As he fought so hard to regain control over himself, so he didn’t blow their stealth by shooting Anna.

However, things went to shit right after that is all I’m saying. Might as well have gained something from it. Like a future headache.

Overall, this episode flies by in the blink of an eye.

All the action, all the moments, lead to one climatic finish at the end of the episode as Keyleth throws herself between Deliah and Vex. Just as Pike vanishes.

You know, the healer. The one I’ve been saying for like eleven episodes should be here with Vox Machina just in case this sort of thing happened.

And, of course, the only other person capable of healing is Keyleth. The one currently dying on the ground. So yeah, this ought to be fun.

It’s also interesting for me, because I know the end. I know Keyleth is alive and well enough that she visits in campaign three. Which means she does not die here and now, or if she does, it’s reversed. Someone resurrects her. Regardless, I know she’ll be around for a long time to come.

So instead of wondering whether she lives or dies. I’m sitting here wondering how we get to that moment.

For me, spoilers don’t always ruin the fun.

Sometimes, wondering how we get from A to Z is more fun to me than knowing Z is at the end of the story.

Vax freaks out over Keyleth and I hope someone brought healing potions and they weren’t in that bag that went over the cliff.

I need some questions answered though in all seriousness.

Does anyone else think it ought to be Keyleth and Vex? No disrespect to Vax and Keyleth! I do enjoy them, and I can’t wait to see their journey unfold. I also know that Vex ends up with Percy. Another good pairing, I might add. I just cannot deny the chemistry between Keyleth and Vex!

Also, I’m going to give my girlfriend a shout-out here as well because as she pointed out, Marisha has been attempting to romance Laura since campaign one and I cannot deny it. I also love that Marisha made a character in campaign three to avoid romance and this time it was Laura romancing her character. Funny how life works out sometimes, even in stories. Those two have excellent chemistry.

I wonder if we’ll see it again in campaign four. Although, if I were Marisha, I think I’d romance my husband. Come to think of it, I think I saw a short that said everyone was out to romance Matt. That’s going to be interesting. I wonder who the victor shall be.

Onto to the next and final episode of season one!

Quick note, I think I’m going to put The Legend of Vox Machina on pause for a little while and review The Mighty Nein in its place. Then resume reviewing Vox Machina while we await season two of the Might Nein and season four of this series drops. As campaign two is my absolute favorite, I’m dying to watch the series.

Drop me a comment and let me know if you’re excited about The Mighty Nein drop or the new season of The Legend of Vox Machina.
