The Legend of Vox Machina: 1×04 – Review

Ew.

Black ooze.

Pike can’t do anything.

The black ooze wants the book.

Lots of people die.

Keyleth is a nightlight.

Crazy episode.

Vox Machina is confined to their keep without their weapons, including Scanlan’s instrument which everyone is grateful for. They attempt to unlock the secrets of Delilah’s stolen book or Scanlan does.

Vax believes it unreadable as far as they’re concerned.

Alas Scanlan persists with it.

Which is the most character he’s shown thus far.

Pike sits adrift in the corner, and I thought Keyleth was going to be the one with the existential crisis, but now we have two.

After the fight with the Briarwoods, specifically with Delilah, Pike has lost her magic, and connection to her god. The Everlight. She sits adrift in the corner of the room, unable to figure out what Delilah did to her.

Although, to be fair, she had a bit of issue before but worked through it. Did Delilah play on something already there?

This causes Pike so much distress, she decides to travel without Vox Machina to a temple. She wants to pray directly to the Everlight and ask for forgiveness and say sorry in person. Or as in person as she can.

Much to the sadness of Grog who wants to go with her, but Pike ultimately needs to go alone. Also, she voices that Vox Machina will need Grog where they’re headed.

It’s a perfectly good explanation for what I’m sure is an Ashley Johnson departure for whatever reason. The voice actor is typically in and out of the table for various jobs, most notably in Campaign Two, the show Blindspot.

I’m curious to see how that plays out, because I think there’s more lurking beneath the surface.

Much like Keyleth who doesn’t seem to believe in herself enough.

Vox Machina is shaken by the undead beings who tried to kill them to retrieve the book. Keyleth managing to save them at the last moment with a whole lot of sunshine.

Pike informs Keyleth she is the group’s light now and promises to keep them safe while Pike is gone. Not like she isn’t going through enough, you got to go and add that kind of pressure Pike. Damn.

Everyone who was guarding them in the keep is dead. Except the main guy who lets them go to stop this.

Whatever this is.

Something he has no idea how he’s going to explain to anyone.

They all join Percy in his quest for revenge and begin a journey to Whitestone to take on the Briarwoods. I hope they level up before they get there. They’re going to need it.

I mean, the Briarwoods stopped at a cemetery and caused you grief. What’s going to happen when you’re on their home turf?

Yeesh.

Although, it was Percy’s home turf first. Maybe he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve.

Either way, they set off to deal with this foe.

Leaving Trinket behind which…. NOO!

I want the giant bear thing to come with us. Probably not a good idea in a D&D sense, given they’ll be injured and have to roll hit points as well. But who doesn’t want the giant loyal bear around on the TV show?

I was very sad to leave Trinket behind.

Much like Trinket himself.

Overall, this was a good episode. It allowed the action to breathe and feel real, while still upholding the gameplay from the original game. I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed watching as Vox Machina attempts to come together in a found family sort of way, while they’re all super reluctant for that to happen.

It’s good.

I’m really enjoying the series, and it reminds me of an adult version of Avatar the Last Airbender. Really good pacing and storytelling, although with a more mature tone since this isn’t meant for children.

The animation is good, and the voice acting is wonderful. Of course. I love these people as people, storytellers, and actors. There’s a lot of love that went into the series and it shows through every moment.

Every bit of dialogue. Every easter egg.

Like I’m pretty sure I saw a copy of Tusk Love somewhere. The care and attention in this, is wonderful. Created by people who love it as much as the fans do, something that shows through every carefully considered moment.

Every moment, every line, carefully selected to tell a condensed version of the campaign’s story.

I love it.

Kudos to the cast, crew, and everyone who helped fund the kickstarter to make this amazing series come to life.

Thanks for reading! Onto the next episode and whatever lies ahead in Whitestone!

Spread the love and read on!
