Xeque Mate 2×04 – Review

Nothing happens!

This is an episode where nothing happens, but it’s still good. Like not a filler, but a filler episode where things are explained.

A bit.

And Maya vents. A lot.

She reveals to us and her unconscious husband that everything that has ever happened between them was part of her plan. Plan to get close and apparently kill him as she holds a golden gun the entire scene. Even pretending to shoot him with it and asking him if he’s decided how he would like to die.

Apparently, she would like more than money from him.

Oh, and that gun looks fake as hell. My goodness. Like I noticed it before because none of the guns they’re holding are heavy enough in the grasp, but these was painfully obvious.

Kudos for whoever painted it though, because it’s convincing enough that if the actor didn’t appear to be waving it around like a tissue. It would have taken longer to notice.

Either way, it’s a web series, I’m not mad. It just made me snicker a bit is all.

Regardless, we learn a few things in the episode.

Maya wants to kill her husband and has meticulously planned with her best friend to make this happen.

They have a police officer in Giovanna’s unit on their side as well.

They kidnapped Heitor.

I was right that Maya gave up the money to help Giovanna. Even her friend believes it to be so.

Maya has a true soft spot for Giovanna.

To the point, she’s risking her plans, her friendship, and whatever else she needs to. She allows Giovanna to have some comfort unlike Christopher.

She does not care that he’s on the floor or hurt.

She gets upset when Giovanna is called a bitch or is dragged across the floor. She promises to shoot people if they hurt her or Giovanna. She insists that Giovanna is placed gently on the couch.

Unlike Christopher, slumped in a corner and clearly of no concern to Maya.

What her endgame here is, I’m not sure.

I don’t even think I’m going to guess.

It’s a very convoluted plan, clearly, and I’d rather the show explain to me than attempt to unravel it myself.

I’m also enjoying the level of crazy we’re dealing with here. Because whatever has driven Maya to these lengths, to marry, and sleep with a man she has no interest in beyond a burning hatred and desire for revenge. He must have done something awful to her.

Which is also odd, because then they would know each other.

Except he doesn’t appear to know anything about her, beyond what perfect story she concocted to earn his trust, and get close to him.

So there’s that.

We spend time in flashbacks as Maya helps Giovanna and frames Heitor.

She’s covered her tracks so that no one will know it’s her. But she’s also sleeping with the officer in charge of the investigation who is not stupid. She may be blinded by attraction and lust and a hint of love.

She’ll eventually figure it out.

It is also crazy to me, that apparently no one noticed the kidnapping.

I mean, three people went missing, and I’m not sure they took the driver. Did he just decide not to call the police? Was he killed? Is he tied up somewhere in there too?

It’s weird. Right?

The only person to notice is Giovanna’s partner, roommate, and best friend. She’s been calling Giovanna and everywhere she could think to find her to ensure she’s okay and yet nothing. The mole in the operation assures her she’ll help look which is actually more than the other officer who is fairly certain everything is.

I’m not sure how any of them are police.

Like officers check-in place. If they don’t check-in, I imagine there’s a protocol to follow for that.

You can’t just tell me that she’s been missing for a couple hours, never arrived at her destination with the person she’s been tasked with protecting, isn’t answering her phone, and is none of her normal places. I feel like this is cause for concern and a search party.

I’d rather overreact, and it be nothing than underreact and it be serious.

In this case, it’s quite serious.

You know, she’s been kidnapped by her lover who waves a gun around and shoots it randomly in a room.

Absolutely unhinged moment there.

I’m not sure Maya has all her sandwiches in her picnic basket. Yikes.

Then it’s my favorite scene of the episode where her henchman complains that he didn’t sign up to be spit on or attacked. Which is odd, because like how did you not know or think the bodyguard would fight back?

My men didn’t sign up for guns pointed at them.

Well, shit dude. If you go around pointing guns at people, someone is bound to point one back eventually. Just saying.

Despite his horrible attempt at being a henchman, the scene is great for the little smirk we see on Maya’s face as he describes what a pain Giovanna was to deal with. I love that little smirk.

Like she’s so proud of her in that moment.

I can’t help but think this guy thought it would be easy, and Maya warned him not to underestimate Giovanna and bring enough people to subdue her. He thought he had it covered.

He did not.

Love that.

I also love that she rises to defend Giovanna.

She has no interest in protecting Christopher. Clearly.

But for someone she is coming to care about? She’ll be damned if she doesn’t do everything in her power to keep them safe. Even under the weirdest and worst of circumstances, that she herself caused in the name of revenge.

Very weird.

Whole thing.

Very weird.

But well, I’m still watching. Let’s see what happens next!
