Xeque Mate 2×02 – Review

For the first time in the series, it appears that both Maya and Giovanna are truly falling in love with each other.

Not just in lust with each other.

They’re in Switzerland still and they have nothing to do but kill time while they await the paperwork Giovanna needs. With that, they spend time together.

Driving.

Dancing.

Drinking.

And being together like a pretty normal couple might as they got to know each other.

Except, they’re not a normal couple by any stretch of the imagination.

However, they continue to get closer and closer. Kissing and playing together like two people falling in love.

The way Maya got drunk and let her guard down with Giovanna in that moment in the snow was pretty amazing. Maya’s held tight to her control the entire series, clearly more than she appears, or wants anyone to know.

She plays a part and plays it well.

However, she chose to let her guard down with Giovanna. Even asking for their intimacy to be a little different this time. It slows and becomes more romantic in nature rather than a fury of passion and heat.

Even at the club, Maya teases Giovanna unlike ever before.

She sticks close and wants to dance. She informs Giovanna this place is important to her and reveals she’s never taken her husband there. Something that Giovanna pokes at and Maya reveals that she doesn’t share everything with him.

She shares things with Giovanna, she won’t share with anyone else.

She plays in the snow, becoming more like a child than the calculating woman who does everything she can to gain power.

Because there’s a lot, I think we don’t know about Maya.

She appears to have very little interest in her husband. And Christopher views her as a prize, it appears she sees him as a means to an end.

What end?

Not sure.

However, whatever she feels for Giovanna is more honest than she allows herself to be with anyone. Except maybe her best friend who is in on the scheme with her.

I’m sure this will all end well.

Meanwhile, Giovanna is falling and pretty much appears to have no idea.

Like she’s enjoying herself and still calling it a fling in her mind. There’s nothing more here. She’s not getting deeper and deeper with a woman she suspects might be involved in the robbery. She’s not in love. That’s not a thing she does. She’s just having some fun and really good sex with an interesting woman who has captivated her.

But there’s nothing there.

Clearly.

I’m pretty sure Giovanna is saying that over and over in her mind, a part of her believing it. Meanwhile, her heart is taking a dive off the cliff without a parachute.

So yeah, I’m sure this will go well.

A potential criminal and the good cop. Always works out in the end.

Aside from the end of the episode in which the audience is given no real answers, Giovanna’s finds something out in relation to the case. Possibly whoever has the account. Though, I doubt it’s actually the person’s account.

It’s probably Heitor who we saw the beginning with Clarice, but I doubt either of them did anything nefarious.

Heitor is a pissed off ex business dude, but he’s not smart enough to pull anything like this off without leaving his fingerprints everywhere. Which is why everything points to him, because it would make perfect sense that he would be so clumsy.

It’s a good cover.

Except, I’m fairly certain it’s Maya pulling all the strings.

Her husband’s, the cops’, and anyone else’s she needs to, to achieve her end goal. Whatever that might be.

Something that might need to change too.

Because she’s falling for the woman trying to catch her stealing from her husband and while Giovanna might not like Christopher, she loves being a cop. It’s what she wanted. What she’s worked so hard for. Will she allow Maya to pull her down? Convince her to join her in this wicked plot?

I don’t know. And I don’t know if Giovanna will go for that.

Either way, I’m sure some drama is headed our way. Guess we’ll find out.
