After a house fire and getting all my equipment back together or replaced, I’m back. And not to mention, my ability to write because I was feeling so low and depressed after everything, I’m finally feeling well enough to return to my writing and thus, here.
FINALLY.
As I’m sure my girlfriend is thinking reading this. Hi baby!
Are you ready?
Truth be told, I watched this episode months ago now, and I read a quick recap with some scenes to refresh my memory.
No sooner did I read the summary of the episode, I remembered what was probably one of the gayest things I’ve ever seen.
Xena making some huge jump, twirl from a band of pirates from the safety and security of land to a cursed ship where she would be forced to live out her days on Cecrops’ ship as he is the only one who is immortal. The rest of his crew remain human and grow old and die eventually while Cecrops carries on with his wretched curse from Poseidon.
Who – by the way – is a real asshole throughout this episode. Damn.
I think he wins for being dick of the year.
And a sore loser.
I’m going to curse you because you did not choose my gift. How dare you?
Why’d you ask, buddy? Or have or enter a competition?
I think that’s a thing everyone forgets, in order for there to be a winner – there must also be a loser. And well, it was your day Poseidon. How about let’s not take it out on the poor guy who just gave an opinion based on what was presented to him?
Horrible.
Then Athena sort of compounds the issue by making him immortal which was supposed to give him time to break the curse. But instead sort of imprisons him in a hell of his own making because he doesn’t know how to break the curse and is forced to live on the sea for like 300 years. In turn, making him pissed at Athena as well.
I mean, Athena, couldn’t you just lift the curse? Or give him instructions on how to break the curse instead?
Or maybe call a family meeting and tell Poseidon he agreed to abide by this decision by an innocent citizen, so maybe you shouldn’t curse him over his opinion. That we asked for – by the way.
I don’t know, just a thought.
Of course, we are also talking about the Greek Gods.
And well, those f*ckers love nothing more than to be extra, extra.
Just look at the ones we’ve met so far in Ares and Aphrodite. So, I suppose it’s not really a surprise that Poseidon choose to be petty.
And keeps choosing that as well.
His willingness to let Xena off the ship for sure illustrated that he was afraid she would break the curse and set Cecorps free. And when that didn’t work, he tried to make a deal with Cecrops.
But like also, given everything that god put him through and that he was willing to let Xena leave and take Gabrielle with her while condemning everyone else. I wouldn’t have chosen to make a deal with him either.
Not by a long shot.
I wouldn’t trust him to keep his word about anything.
I’d take my chances with Xena. Much like Cecrops did.
I loved everything about this episode the more I thought about it.
Xena leaping onto the ship in super extra in love bisexual lady that she is to save the woman she loves because she will most certainly not let that ship take off with her ‘best friend.’
Gabrielle tucking her face into Xena’s neck.
Gabrielle’s grin as Xena fought to get onto the ship with her.
Xena brandishing her Chakram at the sailors while hugging Gabrielle protectively. Just daring them to make a move.
Cecrops being so effing done with these two women after knowing them for five minutes.
I loved that he was annoyed that he was now stuck with both of them and stomped off because he figured they would be handful.
The creepy dude hitting on Gabrielle only to want to explore other options once he’s on land.
A friend sacrificing himself to save Cecrops.
Hidsim’s friendship to Cecrops and then to Gabrielle. I loved how kindhearted he was. That like Xena, he found someone who changed him into a better man. One who couldn’t bear the thought of his friend getting hurt even though it wouldn’t do any damage to him.
I loved that Cecrops was saddened by his death even though he didn’t want to admit, but ultimately it was what saved him.
His acceptance of love.
Which is one of the hardest things to do when you think you don’t deserve it.
Xena and Cecrops have that in common with each other. They both have a hard time accepting the unwavering loyalty and affection from those around them. Believing they do not deserve such a thing for whatever reason.
But love is a powerful force.
One that can’t be stopped.
Xena’s love for Gabrielle took her to that ship. Gabrielle’s love for Xena brought her there. Hidsim’s love for Cecrops moved him so much he finally understood what would break the curse. Cecrops love for everyone and how it touched him saved everyone and broke the curse.
I loved the message.
It isn’t about romantic love necessarily. But the willingness to be loved.
By friends, family, romantic partners, or so on.
Letting love into one’s life is always a good thing.
It lights the darkest moments of our lives.
This show always managed to ground crazy things like being cursed aboard a ship because of a god feel grounded in something real. Something tangible we can easily understand. Love is important.
Essential even to our very lives.
What would you become without it?
What would you have?
I love this show so much and the messages it brings and the silliness it adds to my life.
Not to mention, it’s wonderful to hear them flat out point out the love Xena and Gabrielle share, because it is a bond no one but the two of them will ever fully understand. One that cannot be broken and will weather any storm as long as they stand together.
I love it.
Well, onto the next! Hopefully on a regular basis and if not, I’ll be shouted at plenty.
Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
