- Superman was originally written as a bald villain bent on taking over the world. Sound familiar?
- The Phantom by Lee Falk is the first skintight costume superhero, predating Superman by 2 years! And Batman by 3! He also started the white eye trend we see in so many masked superheroes.
- Ironman was an experiment by Stan Lee to see if a comic about an unlikeable character would sell! Apparently, it will!
- Gwen Stacy was originally meant to end up with Peter as his one true love. This was Stan Lee’s plan, unfortunately fans, writers, and pretty much everyone else liked MJ for Peter better. Go figure.
- The Hulk wasn’t meant to be green! He was supposed to be gray, but green ink coupled with other issues meant green was easier to produce. Thus, he became permanently green.
- Superman initially had more Jewish roots, thanks to his creators both being Jewish. It was later discarded when they sold their rights to the character to DC Comics.
- Superman is credited with being the first superhero with superpowers. Up until this point, there was only The Phantom who was at peak physical human condition, like Batman.
- Did you know Uncle Ben never says his most famous line in the comic? It’s true! In the first appearance of Uncle Ben and his death, the narrator says it.
- In the Marvel universe, Santa Claus is a mutant. And not just any mutant, but the most powerful mutant.
- Shazam was first called Captain Marvel. But well, you could see how that could cause multiple issues, so he was renamed.
- Super-Man almost never got published! Stan Lee was told that this character wouldn’t sell since he was a teen with a lot of problems and based a bug type creature most people hate. Guess they were wrong. Huh?
- Spider-Man is hyphenated for a reason! Stan Lee separated the words to avoid confusion with Superman. At first, he only used a space, but it became a hyphen later. Now, even Spidey himself insists you remember the hyphen!
- In 2023, Google named Spider-Man the most searched for hero! They were really wrong about Spidey.
- Hellboy was rejected by DC Comics! He was pitched to DC, but they passed feeling that his history wouldn’t fit with their line of comics. I mean, they’re not wrong!
- At one point, DC Comics tried to sell some of their most well-known heroes… To Marvel! On the brink of bankruptcy, DC offered Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to Marvel. But Marvel said no. Go figure.
- Stan Lee is most well-known for his work for Marvel, but he also worked for DC Comics. In the 90s, he was hired to rewrite all of DC heroes. He remade Batman and called him Wayne Willaims. I’d like to read those tales.
- Superman could make mini-Supermen… from his hands. At one point during Supes run, he was granted a whole host of weird powers that were later scrubbed from the comics. Thankfully.
- Marvel made black history! They gave Luke Cage his own title comic, making him the first protagonist black superhero character in a comic!
- X-Men #1 is Marvel’s best-selling comic! It sold more copies than any other singular title!
- On the flip side, Amazing Fantasy #15 is the most expensive! It went for over a million dollars once. After all, Amazing Fantasy #15 is Spider-Man’s debut, it’s no surprise to see what it’s valued at.
- Amy Adams auditioned for Lois Lane around three times! I believe it was Superman Returns and a movie that was never made, before she finally landed the role in Man of Steel! Now, that’s determination!
- In another world, Kal-El becomes Batman! In a world in the multiverse, Superman’s ship lands in Gotham and is found by the Waynes. After that, the story is the same, except it’s Kal-el in the costume with all his powers!
- Wolverine can regenerate from a single drop of blood! My goodness, what does it take to get rid of that guy?
- The Phantom is more popular outside the USA. Despite being an American creation, The Phantom’s fanbase is largely outside the USA, in places like India, and Australia.
- Metropolis is a real place! Sort of! There is a city in the USA named Metropolis, which has embraced it’s comic counterpart and has numerous store, statues, and other items dedicated to Superman. Though it’s name is merely a coincidence.
- Batman is a college course! No seriously, in a university in Canada, there’s a class you can take on Batman. It’s all about psychology. They used Batman to teach the topic! Well, that’s one way to get everyone interested!
- Kevin Conroy is Batman! He holds the record for playing Batman more than anyone else! This isn’t a record I’m looking forward to someone else breaking. Conroy is the quintessential Batman voice for me!
- The Phantom is a Legacy hero! A legacy hero passes the mantle on through the years. This legacy is so strong people believe he can’t die!
- Before The Phantom lived in the Bengalla Jungle, Lee Falk envisioned him to be a rich playboy, named Jimmy Wells by day, and Phantom by night! It may sound familiar, but he predated Batman by three whole years!
- The Phantom saved real people! During WWII, Nazi propaganda tried to convince people America had fallen. The Phantom comics were smuggled in, and people knew that as long as it was still being published, America was around, they were being lied to, and there was still hope.
