Chris Evans and Robert Downey JR. Return??? What?

Um what?

I mean, if the title of this said something more like: Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. return as Captain America and Ironman. Well, shit, you’d have my attention.

But Chris Evans isn’t returning as Captain America. Or any version of Cap, reportedly.

Robert Downey Jr. is going to be Dr. Doom. A notable villain to be sure, but, a notable villain to be sure.

It’s one thing to have Chris Evans drop in as a cameo of Johnny Storm and play the Human Torch again as a little nod to his prior history with Marvel.

Or even start over with Deadpool and give him a movie series where Deadpool is actually Deadpool and not whatever they were doing in the X-Men movies.

Sure, makes sense.

No one liked that Deadpool. I’ll believe it.

It’s not even like Ryan Reynolds playing a DC and Marvel character. Or any number of other actors who have done the same, because they’re different worlds. Sure, fine. It works.

But this doesn’t work.

Because everyone loved them as Ironman and Captain America.

If anyone else ever plays those characters, they will be held up to the standards set by these two powerhouse actors who were born to play these roles.

Which is why it makes no sense to return them to the same universe!

If they were a forgettable movie like Green Lantern or hated like the first version of Deadpool Ryan Reynolds played, or even a different sort of franchise like the Fantastic Four. Where we’re not playing in the same sandbox, it would work.

It would be logical.

This is not that.

This is having lost the two biggest draws in 2019 by killing one off and sending the other to the past to live out his days with the love of his life. They’re desperate to recapture the magic these two brought to the table.

Guess what?

They brought it as Ironman and Captain America.

If you’re not bringing them back to play those characters, I doubt it’s going to have the draw you want. If fact, I think it’ll draw more confusion to have two lookalikes in the same world everyone knows. Because let’s be honest, unless you were living under a rock, you know these two guys.

You know Captain America.

You know Ironman.

Bringing them back like this is foolish and a last-ditch attempt to build the MCU back up by capitalizing on their popularity with the audience who broke records for Endgame. Except, it’s not the same.

They’re not playing those beloved characters. They’re going to play new characters and one of them is going to be the villain. The one who is supposed to take over as the big bad that Thanos was.

How are we supposed to stick around for that?

You’ll have to make the heroes excellent and wonderful.

And well, since your main heroes are women like Captain Marvel, I’m sure there will be lots of complaints about them. Even though their movies and actors and stories are just as compelling and amazing.

Can the MCU survive this?

Will it?

Should it?

Or should Marvel take a step back and really think about their next moves?

I think they really need to think some things through and return to their roots. Do something simple and do it really, really well like they did in the beginning with Ironman, Thor, Captain America, and so on.

Before the MCU became this grand thing.

It was good small and they might need a dose of that again instead of trying to top Endgame. Focus. Focus on something excellent and memorable.

I think they need to go back to the drawing board on this one. For as much as I love these two actors, unless they’re playing Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, they shouldn’t be here anymore.

What do you guys think?
