Superman & Spider-Man

Welcome back to another Superhero Sunday!

As we draw near to Christmas and as I wrote up several Christmas related Superhero Sundays, I reflected in Spider-Man’s week how he and Superman relate to the holiday so well.

I wanted to touch on it more.

Because I don’t think there are any better heroes to represent the month of December and Christmas.

Superman brings a childlike wonder to the month. Filling us with hope and reminding us of the future we’re striving for, even if we’re a little far away from it.

Spider-Man brings the now. The hardships of the moment, but a sheer will to carry on day to day. Even though things might suck or be difficult, he finds the strength to get up and go through every day trying to make a difference in the world.

After all, Peter and Clark stand for very similar things.

They want to make the world a better place. They’ve dedicated their lives to this cause, within a suit and without one. They would choose to do the right thing, even at the cost of themselves.

Every time.

Peter tries to be a good man in the face of hardship, and I think there’s no time of year that illustrates the hardships we all deal with than December. Money, family, work, and life seem to be so much harder this month than any other.

And unlike other superheroes, Peter’s main problem is that no matter which way he turns, his life doesn’t always work out.

Work can be difficult with JJ. New York either loves him or hates him. His superheroing gets in the way of his relationships and school and work. He’s always late.

Spider-Man does the right thing, even when it costs him. I think more people need to remember this at this time of year.

And I’m not talking about spending tons of money on Christmas gifts. I’m talking about remembering to think of others at this time of year. Putting others first and petty differences aside.

I think we all need to be more like Peter Parker.

Then there’s Clark Kent.

Clark as himself or Superman reminds us of the magic of Christmas. When everything was bright and cheery when we were children and passing that onto others.

He strives for a better world and does little things to help make Christmas bright for others.

Superman or Clark represent a time in our lives when Christmas was a carefree joy and one we all hope it will be again.

A fun family filled event in our lives. With enough time and energy to give back to those around us in need without giving ourselves away.

I think Peter and Clark are closer than anyone believes.

They struggle. They despair. They have wins and losses. They just respond to them differently.

But ultimately, they both want the same thing – To make the world a brighter place.

A lot of people are not fond of the new slogan they want to give Superman, but I truly love it and feel it represents both Superman and Spider-Man.

So, here’s to ‘Truth, justice, and a better tomorrow!’

From me to you, Merry Christmas!

Or Happy Hannukah!

And if you celebrate neither, I wish you all the best!
