In honor of Halloween, I’ve been doing Halloween themed Superhero Sundays!
This week, we have a reluctant hero up on the docket – Wynonna Earp.
She never does anything by halves and she’s definitely a hero for the books because there’s no one like her and there will never be again.
Also, we’re supposed to be having her grace our screens again – which is exciting!
However, the Halloween themed episode is something to behold.
If you’ve never watched Wynonna Earp, this episode perfectly encapsulates what the show’s about.
Nicole and Waverly are in love, so in love that handcuffs remind an amnesiac Waverly of love and red hair.
Gee, I wonder why.
It’s a very horny couple, in case you were wondering.
Wynonna loves to be drunk.
And mayhem will occur at all times. It does not matter if it’s Halloween. There will be chaos in Purgatory and the Earps will be at the very center of it all.
Even without their memories, Waverly and Wynonna piece together random parts of their lives. Drawing some of the most random conclusions.
Like that Waverly is a cop.
Doc appears dressed as Queen.
Waverly is dressed as an angel at one point. Such foreshadowing there if you watched the entire series, it’s wonderful.
There’s some sisterly bonding as Wynonna and Waverly remind themselves that no matter how far or where like is going to take them, they’ll always have each other.
Which is truly the backbone of the show.
Almost everything Wynonna has done from episode one until now, to the end of the series, was for her baby sister. To protect her. To care for her. To keep her from harm.
But here she is, faced with the idea that her little sister may not need her anymore.
Except she does.
It’s just different now.
And Wynonna doesn’t need Waverly in the same way she did before either. Because for as much as Wynonna loves her sister, she for sure uses her sister to give her life purpose. That she can claim she did one good thing with her life.
But ultimately, this proves to be false.
Wynonna does a lot of good by just existing. Regardless of how she’s protected her sister.
And their bond is not conditional.
Just because Waverly has Nicole, doesn’t mean she doesn’t have room for Wynonna.
And just because Wynonna isn’t the heir the way she used to be, doesn’t mean she has no purpose or place in Waverly’s life.
It’s just different.
And that’s okay.
And this episode is about understanding that things and places and people can change, but some things will always remain.
That they care for each other.
That Nicole and Waverly are meant to be.
Wynonna is still Wynonna, through and through.
It’s a lot of fun.
And chaotic as everything falls apart and there’s a game show for some reason. In a club, run by demons or goblins what have you because sense has no place in this show.
Ever.
And it makes for the absolute best Halloween episode.
Because the show is basically non-stop Halloween. How do you top that?
Make the characters play dress up without their memories and force them to problem solve as people try to take advantage of the fact that the heroes have no memories. Except it doesn’t work, because they still save the day.
Mostly.
At least, in Earp fashion.
Really, that’s all that matters.
