Xena and Gabrielle.

I’m pretty sure these two are absolutely meant for each other.

Xena literally begs Gabrielle not to leave her at the end of season one. I have also completed the Xena Trilogy at the time of writing this.

She says in those episodes that Hercules honors the wife and children Hera stole from him when he fights evil. But nothing in her entire life moves her that way.

Guess what Xena?

Just wait a little while, you’re going to find a little blonde girl who will help you find all the purpose you need.

As I watched season one of Xena I noticed that Gabrielle is who Xena listens to during crisis. She reminds herself of what she’s fighting for. The good in the world. So that people like Gabrielle can go to bed and wake up in a better place each morning.

She values and respects her opinion.

Even if she’s naive.

I think it’s one of the things Xena finds so fascinating about her.

It must have been a long time since she was around anyone so innocent. Since someone looked at the world and saw the good too, not just the bad.

Someone who didn’t see the worst in everyone.

Someone who could look at a former warlord like Xena and declare she wants to be like her.

Except Xena helps Gabrielle discover that she doesn’t want to be a warrior exactly. She likes the adventure, but has no interest in killing or hurting people. She loves to entertain and be a bard, using Xena as the centerpiece for all of her tales.

Much to the annoyance of Xena.

And while so many people underestimate Gabrielle, Xena doesn’t.

She’s a tough and smart.

Instead, Xena takes her under her wing. Determined to allow Gabrielle to explore the world in a safe way. Teaching her different tools and techniques to protect herself so that if she’s without Xena, she won’t die. But never intending to leave her for long.

In my mind, Xena appeared to have decided by herself that she would keep Gabrielle safe. No matter what.

So much so, she even talks Gabrielle out of learning to take up a sword.

Informing her that it makes her a target and that she has to be ready to kill, if she carries a weapon that like. Something Gabrielle finds she simply cannot do. Instead, she utilizes a staff.

A weapon Xena clearly approves of and helps her to learn it.

She teaches her hunting and fighting and camping and survival skills.

While Gabrielle reminds Xena how to have fun and enjoy life.

That just because she’s atoning for the sins of her past doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy life as it’s happening. She can love and laugh.

She can be amused when Gabrielle suggests moving a mountain with her musical skills alone.

She doesn’t mind the added risk Gabrielle poses, since she’s less apt at defense and fighting than Xena.

Something we clearly see in the crossover.

While Hercule and Iolaus fight together as a team. Xena doesn’t placing Gabrielle behind her and taking all the fight has to offer. She’s just enjoying her company.

Having a real friend after all this time.

And while I totally think that Xena has realized by the end of the season that she has feelings for Gabrielle. I don’t think she’s ready or even willing to act on them. Instead, she’s just enjoying the close friendship.

Mostly, I think this, because while I assume Xena is worldly enough to know being attracted to a woman is a thing. I doubt she thinks Gabrielle has any clue.

Not to mention, she’s clearly shown to be interested in men.

So I’m curious as to how the rest will unfold.

When does Gabrielle notice that this isn’t a normal friendship? These sort of things don’t run quite this deep to where your friend is pounding on your chest, demanding that you don’t leave them.

Just saying.

I think Gabrielle is firmly in the baby gay portion of her life where she’s clueless. Passing off attraction as admiration and respect.

I can’t wait to see how that changes as my watch continues!
