Who knew Colter was listening when his sister was talking last episode?
Also, when else do you meet the mysterious siblings back-to-back unless it’s the first season of a show.
Colter reached out to his brother to bury the hatchet between them.
And I’ll give it to Colter, I did not expect this turn of events.
Not at all.
Most of the time the broody male main character has to be forced into dealing with his past or people he doesn’t like or trust. They find themselves in an unavoidable situation with that person or piece of their past and are forced to confront their issues.
And while you could make an argument that exactly that happened with his sister and then his brother brought him a job, this was more than that.
Colter reached out and set up a time to meet with his brother.
He had no idea there was a job or a missing person or literally anything going on in his brother’s life. He was just following Dory’s instience that she have both her brothers back in her life.
Colter tried to honor that wish.
He also didn’t have to reach out to Dory while he was there.
Neither job forced him to deal with his siblings. Not really.
He sought out his sister. She gave him some advice and asked him to help mend their family so they could be siblings again.
Which Colter did.
Despite seemingly not listening to a word his sister said, he did hear her.
He took her advice.
Which is how Colter and his brother found themselves working a job together.
Russell is everything I expected and nothing like what I expected from Colter’s brother.
Like both of his younger siblings, he can clearly handle himself, and isn’t someone who finds himself unable to cope with life. None of them seem affected by life throwing curves or tossing unexpected obstacles in their path.
Which given how they were raised makes sense.
It also makes sense that Colter is hesitant with his brother.
But ultimately, the way Russell chooses to attack the heart of their issues head on, and manages himself, gives me the sense that he really didn’t hurt their father. That he may have been an angry kid. He might have lost his mother and brother, but he’s not cold or haunted by his past choices.
He’s hurt by the choices made around him, but he doesn’t seem to be holding a grudge.
Not even against Colter or his mom.
Not for her asking him to go. Or for Colter not trusting him. He gets why.
But he wanted a chance to tell his brother the truth. To tell him that he’s not the person Colter thinks he is. Something bigger was going on with their parents.
Something that both Russell and Dory clearly don’t want much to do with. Both of them, seem to have adopted the attitude that their crazy affected their childhood and made them who they are, but it has nothing to with now. They both want to move forward and heal from it all.
While Colter wants answers about everything.
He can’t move on.
He can’t get close to people again.
He holds himself away from life and people because he’s confused by his childhood.
If his father was pushed by someone else? Why? Why did his mother ask his brother to leave? What is she hiding? Who moved the little thing in the beginning of the series? What is happening? Why did his father work for the government?
As far as his siblings are concerned, it’s in the past, and it can’t hurt them anymore.
Meanwhile, Colter doesn’t seem so sure since it’s shaped them so much.
Especially him.
Standing at the base of the cliff, seeing the brother he clearly got along well with if this episode is any indication at one point, possibly having killed their father? Must have left a mark.
A father he trusted to keep them safe. Who taught him to survive no matter what.
Someone he looked up to.
Russell was older. Able to separate more of his admiration for his father from the crazy, paranoid man he became before he died.
Ultimately, it’s all complicated relationships, but Colter impressed me.
He’s not so smug or set in what he believes that he can’t bend.
He bent for his sister to try and fix things with his brother.
He didn’t hold it too much against his brother for missing the meeting. Especially after finding out that he was looking for a friend, a brother of sorts.
He listened to his brother’s side of the story.
He heard his sister’s pleas and a reasoning. He saw his brother as he is now.
Colter allowed himself to change and explore perspectives different from his own. And while it may have convinced him to get to the bottom of what really happened to his father, it mended his broken relationships.
Allowing him to take a first step forward that he hasn’t in a long time.
Overall, as a character-based episode this was wonderful.
Colter and Russell were able to dig deep and explore their childhood and relationship. As well as that to their father’s.
Plus we learned a crucial piece of Colter’s character.
He has no retirement plan.
His brother does though.
He wants to own a restaurant. To brew his own beer and settle down to have a peaceful life at some point. Something he hasn’t had.
Quiet.
Rest.
After the thrill wears off.
Except, his brother doesn’t.
Colter wants to live like this forever and honestly, it feels like it should be switched but it works so well this way.
Because it solidifys the sense that Russell and Dory have moved on. They’re making plans, looking to the future. While Colter is still stuck in the past trying to understand, while neither of them want to.
They want to move forward.
It speaks volumes and I loved that his brother wanted to help him with his plan for the future. I think Colter needs people like his siblings who push him out of his comfort zone and help him realize there’s more to life than what happened years ago.
I also loved that his brother left him the pocket knife.
He gave him something special from both him and their father.
A bond I think Dory is too young to truly have with them.
Dory didn’t appear to have quite as much training as they did, as it is clear that even Colter didn’t get the same things his brother did. Each of them was treated differently by the father.
An even more curious insight into their childhood.
An excellent character and relationship building episode! I can’t wait to see how the season finale shakes out!
