Stupid Wife – 3×04 Review

I think Igor almost plummeted head first into the pool.

Honestly, I think that was a missed opportunity.

Alas, this show has some of the brightest moments. I love that it doesn’t shy away from what it wants to say.

I love that Carol and Roger don’t want to be married or even have children. They’re happy the way they are.

I love that Sarah stands up for herself and her sister when she felt pressured to fit into some type of mold.

I love that Valentina supported her sister-in-law. She stood by her choice and reminded her that her choices are her own. Yes, they are from a different generation, but Sarah accepting herself, and her own choices is important.

Even that Valentina didn’t offer for her to come back inside. She let her leave because she was uncomfortable, forcing her father to sit with the choice he made that led to that moment.

For me, too often, when someone convinces you to come back after a disagreement, I’ve had the other person take it to mean everything is fine now. Like they don’t have to apologize or reconsider how their words hurt.

Here, Marcos is forced to deal with the fact that he chased her out of the house with his old-fashioned beliefs.

Just because Valentina and Igor both wanted to be married and have families with every fiber of their being, does not mean everyone does. It’s not the norm anymore.

And that’s okay. It’s good.

Because it means people won’t choose something that isn’t right for them. Engaging in a relationship that should have ended. Or having children, just to have them. Not because you want to have a little person forever.

I love that these production company talks about issues.

Like how hard it is to be a new mom.

For Duda and Luiza it wasn’t this picture-perfect moment after giving birth. They’ve both experienced a lot of emotions and upheaval. They don’t feel like they did before. Emotions are out of whack.

Society says they should feel a certain type of way. People judge them at every turn. There’s countless things to be done during the day.

Laundry. Two children’s needs. With your needs. With a relationships needs. Work. The house. Bills. Nothing stops because you had a baby.

But everyone wants you to be happy despite the stress.

Or that sometimes you’ll leak now for no reason at all, from the boobs, from your bladder. Something is always happening and you can’t get away from it.

And there’s a tiny being relaying on you for everything.

Sheesh. I’m tired just thinking about it. There’s soooo much!

Watching Luiza and their family support Duda is so important. I loved the little moment when Luiza pulled the laundry out of her hands. Like no, I’ve got this right now. Breath.

I love that Luiza is there for her and wants to work out a way to be there even more because her friend needs her.

This isn’t the type of thing we see on TV.

It’s always perfect, it’s always something women go through quickly, or it’s brushed away for the ‘right’ emotions in this time period.

It’s not how it works.

Lots of women struggle after giving birth and they deserve to have their stories told too.

As for Catarina, we see a moment where it appears she might backslide. We even see Luiza’s concern as they listen in. Her tight smile towards her wife.

Then we have dinner with them.

And a moment with Igor.

I’m not Catarina’s biggest fan and I think the redemption is a bit rushed because we’re so close to the end.

But!

That being said, I enjoyed Catarina reaching out to her daughter. She congratulated her on her campaign. Put the ball in her daughter’s court to decide what happens next without pushing her.

She let Valentina decide.

So did Luiza.

You could tell Luiza wasn’t overly thrilled, but understood her wife wanting to try. And you could see how much of an effort Luiza made to be kind and warm to Catarina.

I loved the apology.

I loved the hand holding from Luiza and Catarina. The entire scene was very sweet. I wish there had been more build-up to the pay off, but it’s good. The actresses made it work with the short time.

Luiza and Valentina were sweet as always together.

Their scene in bed, teasing each other. Luiza teasing Valentina over her childhood nickname. The shower scene was beyond sweet.

Who doesn’t want someone they can spend all the simple moments with?

Laugh doing the most normal of things.

Then sitting down to watch a movie together. Which was also so cute by the way, only for Valentina to suddenly pause it.

I was also so stupidly happy that Luiza was all, ‘do you have to potty?’ It’s such a normal thing to happen, it was nice to have. I think we often forget bodily functions unless they pertain to the story when writing stuff like this.

So I enjoyed that tidbit.

Only for Valentina to reveal she wants to have another baby. And for Luiza to agree easily enough.

As I said before, I think Luiza’s memory loss was blessing in disguise for them.

It allowed Luiza to confront her past in a way she hadn’t been able to before. Her mind wasn’t processing the loss of her baby, coupled with the grief of Valentina’s struggles to carry, and her depression following Leo’s birth.

I think her brain took it all away and gave it back, bit by bit, allowing Luiza to come to terms with it all.

And in doing so, allow Valentina to come to terms with their losses as well. Even going to therapy as well.

Leaving them both in a better and healthy mental place to think about more children.

Because otherwise, I don’t think they would have had more kids as Marcos pointed out in 1×08.

Just a thought. What do you think? I’m really curious to know what other people think about my little theory!
