“I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher.”
The name of the episode, the name of the first chapter of the first book, and it’s absolutely perfect.
The moment, I clicked on this episode, and saw the name there – I had to pause a moment, and just stare.
For me, this series is Harry Potter.
Everything I’ve ever seen for Harry Potter is what I wanted for this series, because the books were sooooo good.
Seeing that title there, brought me back to the moment I found this book, sitting on a shelf in Stop N’ Shop. My mom was looking at a book and I wasn’t a huge reader yet, but the cover (original cover) caught my eye. I was drawn to it.
I picked it up.
My mom (huge reader) always told me to read the first page to see if I like it.
I saw the chapter title first and cracked up. Then I read the first page and barely it made it past the first three sentences before I asked my mom for it.
Something she could not believe, mind you.
The rest is history.
I’ve been dying for a proper shot at this series on TV.
The movies were fine, if you’ve never read the book, or heard of them in any shape or form. Otherwise, get out of here with them!
This series opens, Percy is narrating practically from the book.
There are changes.
Some people – I think I’ve seen hating them.
But I didn’t.
Every change added, instead of taking away.
Introducing Myth-o-Magic cards now, instead of later. Changing Gabe so he’s not immediately the monster you know he is, he’s worse. Because he’s hiding in plain sight.
Adding so much more to Sally Jackson than I could have ever dreamed.
I loved that Sally was wildly more fleshed out than in the novel. It works. For this adaptation, it fits so well.
But one thing I cannot stress enough is the perfect casting.
Walker Scobell is amazing.
He’s got the deadpan tone, slightly clueless, always the last to figure things out down!
It’s perfect, without making Percy seem stupid.
His entire demeanor is amazing. When confronting Gabe, how he changes with his mom, and Grover.
There are so many wonderful things to say, only matched by Aryan Simhadri.
His nervousness comes thought like a red neon beacon. His forgetfulness, poor timing, and awkwardness is perfect. He’s exactly how I picture Grover acting and I love it.
It’s like they were plucked directly from Rick Riordan’s mind and dropped into this series.
It’s amazing and wonderful.
And it made me so happy to see the entire thing come to life.
Including the absurd no one noticing things because of the mist. Like a woman turning into a fury or getting killed in front of them.
His sword, Riptide, is actually a disposable pen, and glitters like it’s supposed to! Not to mention, not reappearing in his pocket fast enough. As always.
The freaking Minotaur wearing underpants.
The show is exactly as imaginative and wacky as the book, making it so wonderful to watch.
I love it.
And the only thing I cannot wait for is to see Leah Sava Jeffries bring Annabeth Chase to life.
Rick Riordan himself helped or picked this cast, and I’m sure that I’ll be following their careers forever.
