Reacher – Welcome to Margrave

Welcome to Margrave? Welcome to Hell would be more accurate.

A little behind on the times I know. I’ve heard many millions of people have already watched this show. And I’ll have you know, I have been bugged about watching this show since the first season dropped.

Guess what?

I finally did!

At least, the first episode.

From the moment Reacher tries to eat his peach pie, I feel bad for him. New guy in town, happened to walk by where the body was found – must be him.

Gotta love cops who can manage to think for themselves.

Why would a killer walk by the drop sight again the next morning? For fun? To point out his hard work? To make sure he’s caught?

Also, I don’t like Finley.

I liked him when he stopped the police from being idiots and it pretty much stopped there because he seemed to have no concept of how to do his job. His throw wild thoughts at the suspect in an attempt to get a confession or something was weird.

I don’t like when police keep asking questions after rights have been read.

As pointed out in Miranda Rights, you do not have to be questioned without a lawyer present. If you want a lawyer, the cops are to shut up, and wait.

Except cop TV shows never do it and it bugs the crap out of me. The only one I like it Adam-12, when lawyers are requested, they simply let them get a lawyer, and move on.

So right away, none of the cops endear themselves to me.

Except Roscoe.

Roscoe’s attitude comes from being a woman in a small-town police force. Her harsher tone when meeting Reacher was more about sending a message that just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean he can walk all over her.

Which he doesn’t.

And she understands.

She brings him coffee, treats him like a person despite the situation.

I admire that, because it’s basic human decency most people don’t have.

Like Finley. Sending someone to prison you don’t really believe committed the crime because you want something from him.

Another shot at being a terrible cop and person. Frankly, I don’t like people abusing power or authority to get what they want. Which made me super uncomfortable with Finley.

In fact, the entire thing made me uncomfortable.

So, I’m not going to talk about it anymore.

Instead, I’m going to talk about Reacher.

As a character, he’s likeable from the start. His unwillingness to fight back or hurt cops while he listened to them allowed him to understand them before they knew anything about him. Letting people talk endlessly, is a fine way to get tons of information.

He watched and understood what he was looking at. The people he was dealing with.

In prison, it was no different.

His ability to read situations and assess quickly is impressive.

But I like his style better.

His calm quiet.

Like when he requested the zip ties be taken off because they were hurting him. A simple calm request, filled with logic, and thought. Then to reveal he could have busted himself out at any time.

Instead, he showed respect to police around him.

Sort of reminded me of Superman in Man of Steel.

Ironically, Alan Ritchson played Aquaman in Smallville.

Then picking up the plastic to recycle like a smartass was perfect and thoughtful as well. A jab and care for the planet he lives in.

All in all, he’s an excellent character able to understand people. Which is a skill and a trait many people show, but I like that he admits he’s not always right.

He wasn’t sure whether Finley’s wife left him or is dead, he’s playing the law of averages given age, and statistics. Using what he knows about Finley, backed up in fact.

It’s an interesting take.

I love Roscoe as a no nonsense, but follow her instincts kind of cop.

The other three, after watching I’m willing to bet are corrupt!

Also, I want to note how many times I had to stop something because I was like ‘that’s Donovon from Good Witch’ or ‘Is that Shorty from Wynonna Earp?’

Thankfully, I knew Ritchson from Smallville, so his was easy.

Lol.

All in all, this was an excellent start to the series, especially when we’re dropping at the last moment in the episode to discover Joe, Reacher’s brother was victim number one.

WTF?

That was the only thing running through my mind.

The second? People are going to die. Painfully.

And I’m not sure I’m against that.

I’m totally against cop shows where we don’t follow procedure but pretend like they’re always the good guys. Here, we know he’s not doing the right thing. But it’s not the point.

The point is, he’s about to go all Punisher on their asses.

Yikes. I do not want him coming after me.
