Xena: Warrior Princess – Cradle of Hope Review

Um, why is this advisor to the king so baby murder happy?

Like for real…?

I knew from the moment he rushed the elderly oracle in the first scene that I wasn’t going to like him. Clearly, he’s the bad guy. Got that.

The king, Gregor, is a pretty chill dude.

But I was not expecting the advisor to be so baby murder happy!

Jeez.

He suggested it to the king several times, told his men the baby need not be found alive, and was doing everything he could to get rid of that baby.

Dude, what are you afraid of?

It’s a baby.

The worst thing that’s going to happen to you right now is spit-up and poop. Take it down a notch.

Yeesh.

I was totally cool with his death.

I was honestly happy. Mostly, because I didn’t think the baby or Gregor would be safe if this guy was left around.

What was he trying to accomplish? A hostile takeover? Baby murder? Protect the kingdom? Power hungry?

His motives were a bit unclear, but I didn’t care. I had a good time watching this pompous idiot walk around like he was the smartest man in the room, but in fact his shoes are smarter than him.

Enough about the homicidal manic.

Let’s talk about the prophecy!

First of all, isn’t Apollo the god of prophecy? Not Zeus?

I know Greek history pretty well through Rick Riordan’s book series and Tumblr when people accidently predict the future. Usually Apollo’s name is tossed around.

Am I wrong? Did I miss something?

Should we have contacted the three Fates?

Anyway, my first thought was cool, the king will adopt.

But then the whole hunt for the baby and the extremely crazed line, “That baby is under arrest.”

A baby? Is under arrest? What are the charges? He pooped on the king?

Then I had a moment where I was like, do we not adopt in this time?

Along with remembering when the king was all Xena is a blood-thirsty warlord who wants to take over my kingdom and make my people suffer, I was reminded times are different.

So, I was wondering if adoption was on the table at all.

Because that seemed to me how the prophecy would come true.

Why people suddenly jumped to a baby was going to off the king was beyond me. I just thought, hey, you lost a kid, he lost his parents, let’s put you together.

Thankfully, Xena had the same thought.

In this episode, one of my favorite things was watching Xena’s brain work.

She saw around corners, saw people for who they really were, understood a prophecy, and outmaneuvered literally everyone.

It was hilarious when the king and advisor thought she was late to the meeting. I was thinking she’s got something up her sleeve.

She pegged the advisor and the king right away with the type of people they were.

Sought to give the baby a decent home.

Give Pandora family.

All while sneaking in, stealing the box, and getting it to Pandora in time.

Xena had a dozen things on her plate in this episode and not hit the ground.

Not even the baby.

The scene where they were just chucking the kid around like a sack of potatoes made me laugh so hard. Who thought that up?

Who was sitting in the writers’ room and went, what if Xena tossed the baby around while fighting?

And then the other writers thought it was brilliant and it made it’s way onto to TV.

This is the kind of ridculousness that you don’t get on TV now.

Also, I would like to have more scenes where Xena is forced to cope with children.

As so far, we’ve gotten her telling age inappropriate tales and asked Gabrielle if she was holding it wrong? Nothing like watching a supposedly blood-thirsty warlord deal with tiny humans.

Now, onto the entire reason I started watching this series in the first place.

Xena and Gabrielle.

I think I spent this entire episode rolling my eyes at Gabrielle.

She was so silly and so goofy and so innocent.

The scene in the tavern illustrated it so well.

Xena’s noticed everything. The boy sent to fetch the king’s guard. The odd stares from the barkeep. Her plan to deal with them without weapons.

Fire spitting was awesome, by the way.

Gabrielle noticed nothing.

Even Pandora noticed some things.

But Gabrielle is so innocent and naive as to how the world works. Even her question of why would someone send a baby down the river.

Lots of reasons.

People give up children for lots of reasons and judging them over it doesn’t help an already tough choice.

Unlike Xena who took a realistic approach.

Even Gabrielle’s question, can we keep him?

No. You cannot.

Not because he isn’t yours, but because Xena is already protecting one innocent being, she doesn’t need a second.

Ever part of their interaction highlighted how different their lives have been.

Gabrielle couldn’t sleep on the cold, hard ground because of the rocks.

Xena slept fine.

Gabrielle innocently wondered what the sound may be.

Xena prepared for a fight.

Overall, there was little development in their relationship beyond spending more time together and learning to trust and work together. Which is a highly important factor I’m sure they’ll need in the future.

I was wildly impressed when Gabrielle successfully talked her way into the castle by befriending the servent.

So was Xena.

Gabrielle learned something in these last few episodes, her mind is worth something. Being able to talk and not just fight can get you places too.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. It made me laugh, it ended sweetly.

And more importantly, it was downright entertaining.

Also, I want to commend Lucy Lawless for her dance. Normally, I find scenes like that so cringeworthy.

However, Lucy displayed a sort of power in that scene. She knew she was wielding a weapon, just like her sword or chakram to get what she wanted with the knowledge that she could protect herself. She wasn’t in danger, even in a room filled with enemies.

I actually liked the scene, which surprised me.

So kudos to Lucy!

Also, until that scene I don’t think I realized that Lucy isn’t as stocky and huge as she seems to be. Her ability to command a room or seem larger than life itself lends to how perfect she is as Xena. She manages to be imposing without being physically huge.
