Who’s the dude?
Why is there a dude?
These are the questions I found myself asking while watching episode two of Xena: Warrior Princess.
Really? You found your family?
In this boring, dull dude who won’t pick up a sword?
Yeah, that’ll work out, Xena.
Yeesh.
Was this the network in the 90’s shouting, make it less gay! Add a man! And the writers were like, cool, okay. Like this?
He’s the most uninteresting, boring man.
The only thing I liked about him, was when he gave the dress to Xena. I thought there was going to be a whole thing over the dress, but I actually liked what he said.
His wife lives on with him, not in her belongings. His memory and love for her live within him. A dress is just a dress.
Which is good, because Xena promptly destroyed the dress trying to save the ungrateful townspeople.
At this point in the series, beyond knowing she was a warlord in her past, and is trying to make amends – people’s reaction to her is hilarious.
I don’t know why it makes me laugh so much.
Maybe it’s because I expect a warlord to be like the others we’ve seen. You know, with an army.
Xena strolls into town alone or with Gabrielle.
Like, does she seem threatening right now?
I mean, yes. She’s terrifying, but the lack of army, and being followed by a literal ball of sunshine sort of tempers the stoic, evil, warlord thing.
Okay, enough about the boring man.
Why were Xena and Gabrielle separated? Boo.
Unfortunately, the two of them spend most of the episode apart. But we are treated to a few tidbits I want to mention.
Is it foreshadowing that we’re in episode two and Gabrielle is talking about soulmates? Finding their tree in the forest?
Each are presented with a love interest vaguely resembling each other.
A warlord who is actually nice and wants to do the right thing and find peace.
And a man who has a family, runs a farm, and wants to live in peace.
Hmm. Are the writers trying to tell us something?
Cause it sort of feels like it.
Also, Gabrielle is asked by Xena at the end of the episode if she misses her family to which she responds by saying not when she’s with Xena.
I don’t know about you, but that’s some level of romantic there. Like if one of them was a man, you wouldn’t be wondering if it was foreshadowing. You’d know it is.
One of the other things we’re treated to is Xena and Gabrielle’s bond.
Here in this episode, they’re very uncertain of each other.
Gabrielle is left behind because she can’t fight or move as quickly. She even feels compelled to remind Xena not to forget her, like she’s afraid Xena will run off without her. Something, I’m sure won’t be a factor in the future.
And I mean, forgetting about Gabrielle.
But let’s be honest, this is a 90’s TV show, so of course the hero will leave behind the love interest for her own safety at some point, because that’s what they do.
Every. Time.
Can you tell what I think about that?
Anyway…
There’s a part of me wondering too, if Xena is going to get sick of watching out for Gabrielle.
Does she find it more annoying to travel with her now? Does she not mind? Does Gabrielle annoy her? Amuse her?
She’s hard to read on her feelings, but I suppose that letting her travel with her and returning for her, calling her a friend indicate some level of affection.
I’m super interested to see how this plays out as their bond grows.
It’s so naive right now.
Gabrielle too.
Watching her alone without Xena makes me so nervous. Like I’m convinced she’s always in danger and shouldn’t be away from Xena lest something terrible befall her.
Like, kissing a random warlord to get away from some guy.
Then thinking he’s it. Nope. No.
She’s so innocent. Someone wrap her in bubble wrap.
Also, how long can that last around someone like Xena?
She’s literally looking for trouble. That’s her whole purpose is to help people and deal with the people she used to be like.
How long can Gabrielle remain innocent? Or not be a warrior? How long before Xena gets sick of the defenseless girl and needs someone who can hold her own?
Or will she not care because her affection for Gabrielle outweighs the rest?
I’m so excited to see.
Overall, this episode was good. But I liked episode one better. I hope that separating Gabrielle and Xena becomes a thing.
Oh, oh, oh! And Xena with children.
Please, ditch the guy but let Xena hang out with more children please! Lucy Lawless is amazing with kids and is hilarious when given the chance! Please, play into that a bit more.
