Titans – Titans Review

I watched the pilot of Titans.

Uh.. Did anyone else feel like this was a complete knock-off of the Netflix series Daredevil?

I haven’t even watched that series, my Dad has. But based on everything he told me and the trailers I’ve seen. It’s like someone went, we need to do that, but for DC.

And someone else agreed.

Like, what if we take the Teen Titans and make it super dark and gritty and bloody like Daredevil on Netflix?

Yes!

Except NO!

It doesn’t work! It’s like they took Young Justice and Titans and tried to cram it into this slot where Daredevil, Punisher, and Jessica Jones are in an sorry attempt to keep up with them.

Like the whole thing with Dick running the guy’s face along glass.

A scene similar to a head smashed in a door or a guy’s face dragged across a mirror. Both scenes told to me by my father when I told him what they showed in the pilot.

It doesn’t work people!

DC isn’t marvel.

It isn’t as gritty or dark. Stop trying to make everything dark and dreary. For some characters, it doesn’t work.

Everything was shaded gray. The characters are brooding. They can’t smile or they’ll lose their edge.

I love Superman & Lois! In the latest episode, Clark was dancing with his wife and his teenage son sweetly asked to cut in and dance with his mom. I loved it!

People don’t have to be miserable all the time to be interesting.

Does it work? Yes. I will not deny it.

Do I think it works here? No.

One of the things they nailed was Dick. He said he didn’t want to be like Batman. It’s why he left. But it didn’t jive with scrapping a man’s face along glass to make a point.

He doesn’t want to be Batman, so this version wants to be worse?

Like, wha?

In the comics, Dick Grayson firmly establishes he can’t be Batman because he can’t be what Bruce is. He thought he could and discovered he wasn’t built that way. And Bruce honored that because he didn’t want anyone to be like him.

I don’t understand where we’re going here with this line, but the actions don’t match.

However, him being a cop was an amazing choice I loved. A way to help people, but without the suit.

I even loved that he’s the guy who has a ‘thing’ for lost kids. He was one. He gets it. His entire demeanor when he walked into the interrogation room was stellar.

You could tell he wanted to help.

He was completely honest and kind. Even warm.

So different than his other moments.

I really enjoyed this actor’s performance. He’s a perfect choice.

I don’t like the world they set the show in. It’s too dark. For DC. For the Titans. It just doesn’t jive with me.

The show is trying too hard to be something it’s not. Something it can’t be. It’s not Daredevil. It’s not this horrible dark thing, we should never cast a light on.

And it falls short because of it.

A knock-off is never as good as the real thing.

However, I do want to say, I enjoyed the actors. They were all amazing. They did a phenomenal job making this world and these characters come to life. If it was called literally anything else or not set in a world where Superman and other beacons of hope are supposed to be, it might work better.

Alas, it’s a DC property that doesn’t feel like DC.

Just like Man of Steel doesn’t fit in with the rest of the Superman mythos.

It just didn’t work.

There’s a reason why Christopher Reeves is timeless as Superman. There’s also a reason why Tyler Hoechlin is the only rival Christopher Reeves has had for the best portrayal.

Each capture the spirit of the character despite the different takes, the different settings, and time in their lives as the character.

Capturing the spirit of the source material is the most important.

Everything around them can change, but if the fundamental aspects of their character disappear. It’s game over.

Titans fails on that front for me.

Please! Tell me your thoughts! Does it get better? Do you totally disagree? Agree? Let me know!
