Dog (2022) – Movie Review

Does anyone else have the terrifying fear of watching movies that feature animals?

I need a warning label somewhere on these things that tell me if the animal makes it to the end alive.

Please.

Spoil it.

I don’t mind. Otherwise, I’ll be sitting there the entire movie, chanting to myself.

Don’t die. Don’t die. Don’t die. Don’t die. Don’t die. Don’t do this to me. I can’t take it. Don’t make me fall in love with an animal for something tragic to happen. My heart will shatter.

Well, if you’re like me, here’s the spoiler for this movie – the dog lives.

Whew.

That was a close one. I actually think I want to rewatch this movie so I can enjoy it without worrying whether or not they doggy will be put down.

Ugh.

Good news, the dog in question in this movie named Lulu – a military dog who has lost her handler, makes it to the end of the movie alive and well.

This movie reminded me of one I saw years ago called Max.

Same type of deal, a military dog loses his handler and is no longer able to serve because they’ve become too aggressive.

With a vague memory of that movie, I’m not sure which I like better. Each one was sad and heart-wrenching while also being funny. They were both good and I recommend checking them out.

Channing Tatum is goofier than I have ever seen him in this movie.

He jokes and smiles and is easy going in a way I haven’t seen in his movies before.

It was a refreshing.

I also feel like I’ve only ever seen him play two styles, where he’s a dancer or a broody army type guy.

Here, he plays a sad sack.

And Lulu is a sad sack.

And they’re both lost and need something but aren’t sure what that is or how to ask for it. Only to find it within each other.

There are times when I want to smack his character for how he treats Lulu, like refusing to call her by name. He says she was sweet once, but also says she used him as a chew toy while they served together. It muddies the context of their past.

Was she nice to him?

Did she not like him before?

Or is it now?

I don’t know, and truthfully, I don’t care.

Lulu and Channing Tatum’s character come together through a series of ridiculous struggles as they both come to terms with civilian life together.

The movie features wild scenarios and crazy situations and schemes as they make their way across the country together to arrive at her handler’s funeral where the hero dog’s presence was requested by the grieving family.

It’s a good watch, if you’re looking for something and stupid to watch.

Fair warning though, the last ten minutes or so will leave you in tears.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
