Hey!
Let’s talk about movies!
Every month, I’m going to feature what is – in my opinion – a classic movie! We’re going to rediscover some of the best movies.
First up on this month’s list is The Phantom!
This movie premiered on June 7th, 1996, starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Treat Willaims. It like so many movies nowadays, was based on a superhero comic strip by Lee Falk.
In fact, the Phantom was the first comic to ever to depict the superhero with the white-out eyes. Yes, even before Batman.
This movie has everything needed in a superhero movie.
Villains around every corner, including a man who uses his money and power in New York City to twist things and gain unstoppable power. We’ve got badass women who kick ass and don’t shit from anyone.
Seriously, Kristy Swanson plays Diana Palmer. A tough as nails street smart woman who sees what’s going on out in the world and does everything in her power to right the wrongs. She takes no shit from the main character, the Phantom AKA Kit Walker, her ex who left her without a word.
Even when he tries to explain and apologize, she’s still mad because it doesn’t stop the hurt or that he should have picked up a phone.
He even tells her she’s right. He stops trying to justify it.
Then there’s Catherine Zeta-Jones character who captains a crew filled with women only. She’s intelligent and skilled. Though she starts as a villain, she quickly realizes her path may not be best. She’s a kickass chick who I wouldn’t want to piss off.
Not to mention, it features a team-up between these two women, where they decide to stick together against all the surrounding men. Simply, wonderful.
Billy Zane bulks up for the role. He’s charming, sweet, and has no trouble dealing with the powerful women around him. They don’t always follow his lead, but he’s happy to smile, and follow them. He tries to do the right thing, while being haunted by the ghost of his father who he wants justice and revenge for after he was killed.
He tries to do the right thing. He’s just good guy.
Treat Willaims is a treat to watch as Zander Drax. He’s a business mogul willing to buy or kill anyone who stands in his way. Even in a boardroom, if he has to. He plays the charming, swarmy business villain perfectly.
And he plays so well against Billy Zane as he lets his crazy loose and Kit Walker is left thinking this man is absolutely deranged and unhinged.
Which he is.
The movie is filled with action, supernatural, fighting, revenge, a secret brotherhood who has killed the Phantom over and over, yet he keeps coming back.
He’s nicknamed ‘the ghost who walks’ because so many people have killed him, but he continues to show up. The Singh Brotherhood hates him.
If only they knew the secrets of the Phantom.
There’s a love story! There’s drama! There’s fighting! Action! Secrets! Ladies being badasses! Skulls with a ridiculous laser power! Pirates! Corrupt businessmen! A guy in tights! The nicest and most loyal cabbie in New York City! Planes, boats, horses, and a tiger! What more could you want?
It is truly a one of kind movie that I have loved since I was a little kid. I watched it over and over when I was a kid and it never failed to fill me with joy.
In today’s world as explained by Matt Damon, too many movies are about getting you into the theaters. They are one trick ponies you won’t watch again once you leave the theater. But it doesn’t matter because they got your money. Not like before, when movies were made to be watched, over and over.
When they wanted you to buy it and have it and watch it timelessly.
So, cheers to movies we can rewatch time and time again and they never go out of style!
That’s what this monthly is for. To remind us how good it is to rewatch movies. To find one that never gets old. So, I’ll see you on the first of every month for a new classic to check out!
As always, thanks for reading! I hope you check this movie out, if you haven’t already! Or maybe I inspired you to watch it again!
In fact, I’m going to do that right now!
Please, like, comment, subscribe, and follow me!
Spread the love and read on!
