Maya & Carina – 6×12 & 19×12

Did anyone else get some fanfiction vibes from the scenes last night?

Seriously, I had hoped that Maya freaking out in the cave, had something to do with Carina.

But I thought, this show never fails to fail, so no point in getting my hopes up.

(It’s like the Datsun from Roadkill. AKA Rotsun.)

Anyway, I thought there was no chance we’d get anything interesting last night. The glimmer of hope Danielle is dangling in front of us, isn’t going to amount to much.

And then… it did.

Was it perfect? Was it everything I could have wanted?

No. No.

Was it better than my very low expectations?

Yes.

Let’s dive in.

I want to give shit to Ross just a little. She had a perfect moment to tell Maya her wife was in danger before she was dangling off a cliff. She already heard something on the radio when they were searching and didn’t say shit.

As for Maya’s panic attack while hanging there, it was amazing.

It was everything I wanted to see.

I wanted to see Maya more concerned with her wife’s safety than her own. I wanted to see the wheels spinning in Maya’s head as she realizes Carina could be hurt or dying and they still haven’t gotten through this rough patch.

Danielle did an excellent job with Maya’s facial expressions as she went through a range of thoughts.

What if Carina dies thinking Maya puts her job first? What if I never get to be with her again? What if she’s dying somewhere and I can’t tell her how much I love her?

There were so many things running through Maya’s head in that moment, her safety, the people she was trying to rescue, and even her job – meant nothing.

Travis trying to get her to focus by bringing up that their jobs were on the line, illustrated how little Maya cared.

It didn’t break through.

Ross broke through to her by promising to get updates as soon as the people were rescued.

The threat of losing her job, didn’t get through to her panicked brain.

The only thing that worked was the promise of knowing whether or not Carina was okay.

In her mind, saving these people brought her one step closer to getting to her wife. She wasn’t focusing on her job, for her job, she was doing it to get to her wife.

Every step she took, everything she did in that cave was designed to get them out faster to get to her wife.

Despite Ross telling her she was a first responder and that’s her focus – it wasn’t.

She did her job, to get out of the cave, to go to Grey Sloan.

Once she was out of the cave, her sole focus returned to Carina.

She called her, she was worried, and she didn’t care what it took to get to her wife. She’d deal with Ross, even if she doesn’t like her. She’ll jump out of the moving engine to run to her wife.

I think it was an interesting choice to show the first time Maya runs again, she’s running to Carina.

She spent the first part of season six running from her problems and her wife.

Except those problems caught her.

And now that she’s actually working through them, we see her use her skill for running to run for what she really wants. Not her job. Not some medal. But her wife. Her family, her future.

I liked the choice to show Maya run again on screen for the first time to Carina. It shows a level of care in the story I didn’t think the writers were capable of. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

However, someone said something about wishing we could have seen Ben and Maya running at the end to their wives.

I would have loved that.

Ben and Miranda are a very healthy couple from what I’ve seen. They’ve worked through problems and come out stronger. They have a family. Seeing Maya and Carina compared and paralleled to them fills me with some hope that things will get better.

And that they’re trying to make this storyline into something meaningful.

That moment in the engine did amuse me a little.

Travis looked so exasperated when Maya demanded to be let out.

What did he expect? That Maya was just going to sit still in the engine and just wait patiently?

Has he met Maya?

Even with therapy, she’s still going to be Maya. Which means she’s incapable of sitting still. And definitely not while her wife’s well-being is up the air.

Another point to illustrate how little her ‘team’ and supposed ‘family’ know her.

Like Andy asking if she was alright.

Um, no.

Would you be alright if your loved one wasn’t answering the phone and there was chance they were hurt in a life threatening way?

What a dumb question.

I understand waiting to say or do something to help Maya. But I would have just helped get her to her wife as fast as possible. Not open my mouth and say unhelpful and dumb things.

The only one with some sense was Ross.

Even Sullivan was like, what? That was her face when Maya demanded to be let out. He thought she was crazy.

Why?

Haven’t you people done crazy things for love?

We watched some! We’re still watching some! For the love of…

Sigh.

Anyway, watching Maya just jump out of the engine and not care about anything else was just downright amazing.

Onto Grey’s.

I don’t watch Grey’s, so I watched the bits with Maya and Carina only.

The beginning shot was amazing though. Seriously. Kudos to the actors for pulling that off and to the crew and director for getting it to work so seamlessly.

Also, thank goodness for someone finally showing Carina in complete action as a doctor.

She’s always in surgery or off delivering babies and we finally got to see a glimpse into her world. We got to see how good and in control of everything she is. Her grim face as she knew the consequences of the choices they would be forced to make was amazing.

Stefania is truly a gifted actress.

Her seriousness and care were perfect.

Jo struggled with the choice they were forced to make by delivering the baby early. Unlike Jo, Carina’s experience allowed her to maintain a poker face and go on.

They had no choice.

Or they would lose them both.

Sometimes, choices have to be made.

Also, I hope that the irony is not lost on anyone that these supposed ‘pro-lifers’ tried to kill not one, not two, but three people.

Including an unborn fetus.

You know, the thing they claim to be trying to save.

Honestly, it was a fantastic representation of how full of shit they are.

Not even sorry.

Getting to see Carina in action was an unexpected highlight. And Stefania should not make surgery and delivering babies look as stunning as she does.

As I watching it, I asked myself how this woman could always look so good?

Meanwhile, as Carina and the other surgeons desperately tried to save lives, Maya and Ben were trying to find out whether or not their wives are amongst those who need saving.

The argument with the security guard was amazing.

Watching the two of them, team up to try, and get to their wives.

It’s enough to make me swoon a little.

Especially with Maya’s disheveled look.

Like Maya and Carina came face to face and I kept thinking, neither of them should make this look so damn sexy. Like come on!

How is every look just amazing?

Seeing them flag down Teddy to their aide and her go off on the security made me snort. Then I laughed when Teddy poorly chose her words.

“Carina’s in surgery.”

Really? Really Teddy?

You couldn’t have thought that one through just a bit more? Just a little? Think about how that might sound to a worried spouse who has had minimal access to the what’s been happening in this building.

It made me chuckle as she realized what she said and how it sounded to clarify to both of them, that their wives are fine, and to call if anyone gives them trouble.

I really have to say that Teddy just letting them wander about the hospital looking for their loved ones was nice. I genuinely thought she’d page the wives or give locations or something and then kick them out so she could focus on bigger things.

Instead, she was just like, they’re not here to cause problems. They can stay as long as they want.

She just got that they needed to see for themselves that they were okay and allowed them the space to do it.

It was very sweet.

Also, Teddy is 100% a Marina shipper.

Then we got to see glimpses of the two of them rushing through the hospital to find their wives.

Surprising only the other characters, Maya stayed with Ben until she was certain his family was safe. I’m sure along the way she was keeping an eye out for her wife, but her smile in the operating room was so cute.

She was so happy for them.

She was happy to see Bailey was safe.

And I loved how Bailey wasn’t even surprised to see them. It took her a moment that they were in the gallery, but she just smiled, and promised she was okay.

She seemed touched.

She also seemed happy Maya was there.

That she was putting Carina first.

Then they were off to see Prue. I loved that once Maya knew Ben was fine and his family was fine, she took off. She was like, good, you enjoy your happy. I have to find mine.

Her relieved smile and voice were everything when she finally found Carina.

She didn’t care about anything else. Even if she didn’t get to hug her, which you could see she was holding herself back from doing. She was just so relieved to see Carina with her own eyes.

You could see the whole world disappeared when Maya found her.

It was just Carina.

On the flipside, I don’t think Carina expected Maya to show up.

She didn’t call her. Neither she nor Bailey have stopped to check their phones, or they’d probably would have seen the thousand calls and checked in.

She didn’t know what went out over the emergency lines. Carina had no way or knowing whether or not news reached Maya.

Unlike Bailey and Ben who exchange messages throughout the day at work. We saw that when he was at the station. He knew something was up because she wasn’t texting him back. He even asked if it was a busy day. It was only a matter of time before he knew what was happening and came running.

Which is why she wasn’t surprised to find him checking in.

She knows what she means to him.

While for Carina and Maya, things are still up in the air right now.

Maya was also at work. And we know Carina is not convinced that work doesn’t come first.

Not until she’s standing in front of her on what has to be one of the worst days for her career. The clinic was attacked. She delivered a baby there under odd and uncomfortable circumstances. Only to think they were safe and find out the opposite. She then operated on and had to deliver a baby before he should be, while the mother and colleague fights for her life.

Not to mention, the OB floor and the ER are dealing with clinic overflow.

There’s probably a ton of extra woman around needing medical attention and less OBs.

As several are pulled away for surgery on the incident.

She’s trying to keep up with this horrible day and keep herself together after witnessing the horrors of humanity.

Only to round the corner and stumble into her wife.

Her out of breath, sweaty, and dirty wife in her work clothes. She’s run all this way, left work, didn’t bother to clean, and somehow got into a locked down hospital to find her.

That’s a lot of emotions she just can’t unpack right now.

She has a job to do.

These women need her right now. After everything today. It’s all the more reason to keep moving forward to help women get the care they need. And all of Grey Sloan rose to the occasion. Just as Bailey promised the clinic would be open the next day.

They can’t stop.

It’s too important.

Carina can’t afford to break down in her wife’s arms right now. Or unpack everything she’s feeling.

She needs to keep working.

So she does.

And Maya doesn’t mind.

She’s just so happy to see her alive and whole. She lets her slip by to the room.

But Carina can’t leave her wife with nothing, can’t be so cold in the face of such unwavering support on a terrible day. So she thanks her.

She softens, just a bit, what she can without losing it.

And Maya eats it up, because she knows Carina’s just holding it in to help people like she always does. But she stopped for a moment to let Maya know how much she appreciated it.

Carina needed a light in the middle of the storm she’s been living in. And Maya has been it again for the last couple weeks.

Perfect.

Then there’s Maya who looks utterly lovestruck as she watches her wife work.

I can’t help but wonder where Maya got all the information on what Carina has been doing all day. Did Carina tell her? Was someone else telling her? How did she know?

I loved that Maya saw her wife in action. Say how good she is. That scene in season four when they deliver a baby and Maya confesses later that it made her fall in love again was one of my favorites. To see a similiar moment, where Maya realizes she doesn’t realize how wonderful her wife is was amazing.

Maya’s not stuck in her own head anymore.

She can see clearly now.

And she can see, how much more she could love and appreciate her wife.

Even as Ben points out that this is what their wives go through whenever they leave for work.

In season five we saw Carina express fear over Maya’s job, though not to Maya. It was nice to see it come up again, since I didn’t think it would.

However, it would be better if Maya and Carina could be the ones talking about it.

The little dig at Ben made me laugh too.

Carina at least knew from the jump that Maya was a firefighter and would be in danger. There wasn’t a surprise career change.

Ah, I love this couple.

I hope that the future episodes include the two of them sitting and having a conversation about everything. I think enough time has passed where this seems reasonable. I don’t want a big thing to bring them together. I want a conversation and a happy choice.

I also want Carina to put her ring back on.

Please and thank you.
