I’m not ashamed to admit it, I love all things fanfiction.
Far too often canon disappoints or sometimes it doesn’t even get the chance to disappoint. (Looking at you Netflix canceling all the good shows.)
But thankfully, we have the fanfiction authors and websites like Archive of Our Own to fill in the gaps.
Too often fanfic authors are thankless, sometimes, they even stop writing because they think no one cares, so I’m introducing at new feature! Every Friday, now dubbed Fanfic Friday will feature a fanfic or fanfic author. So, strap in, because I read a lot of fanfic.
Like sometimes, I read so much fanfic I forget to read books and when someone is like what are you reading right now, I blank for a second… A 30,000-word count, coffee shop AU featuring my two favorite idiots falling in love, again.
Oh, right, sorry. You meant a book.
Well, nope. Not anymore. If you like fanfic, send me your favorites! Give me something new to read or a new show to binge so I can catch up on the fanfic!
Anyway!
First up this Fanfic Friday, From The Ashes by wrackwonder.
Oh my goodness, while wrackwonder was posting this fanfic, I was practically Pavlov’s dog. I’d get the notification that a new chapter dropped and I would – sometimes quite literally – drop everything to read it.
This fanfic is a complete work with a sequel being published now.
It’s 42 chapters, 191,957 words of pure genius.
Wrackwonder From The Ashes is a Station 19 fanfic focusing on Maya Bishop and Carina DeLuca. And Station 19 would benefit from hiring this person, whoever they may be to write for their show because my goodness do they have a far better understanding of their characters than the writers do.
They manage to balance the mental health issues Maya clearly presents while remaining true to the characters, providing drama, closure, and actual growth.
I don’t want to spoil the fic too much should you like to read it, but I will say the approach to the couple is true and genuine. Even to the surrounding characters, wrackwonder made an observation about the other characters’ relationships to Maya I haven’t been able to shake because it’s so true.
I also loved that Carina very much feels like her own character and addresses how she seems to be on ah island sometimes without Maya.
It is one of my favorite fanfics.
Not only that but it is one I reread over and over again since discovering it and its completion.
Wrackwonder is truly an excellent wordsmith, and I cannot sing them enough praises. If you’re reading this wrackwonder, you have a fan for life.
Check it out if you’re a fan of Station 19 or Maya and Carina and read their extensive line of works.
