The episode where everything and nothing happens.
I’ve been racking my brains all day to figure this episode out and I’ve finally got it!
Everything happens because the characters finally start to figure out what’s really going on, stuff that the audience already knows. So while it’s new for them, it’s not new for us.
It’s also stuffed with reminders and things we’ve seen coming a mile away.
Like the Mon-el plot here. We knew there was more to the Legion storyline going on here. In the first episode he reappeared Mon-el said a lot of people would die including Kara if he didn’t get out of the cell. Then suddenly he changed his tune and said he was here by accident. Either that’s sloppy writing or there’s more then meets the eye with the Legion.
We also guessed there was more to Imra and Mon-el’s marriage then what we’ve seen. They have had virtually no screen time where their relationship doesn’t revolve around Kara and Mon-el’s relationship.
After this episode I’m convinced the writers are paving the way to put Kara and Mon-el back together.
I will confess to enjoying their chemistry on screen but I hope if they choose to put them back together, the how better be good and their relationship needs to be far more healthy. They need to listen to each other. I know a lot of people have issues with Mon-el not listening to Kara but I have the same issue with her. Not to mention I think it’s unhealthy to let one partner dictate the other’s every action and thought. Don’t you?
I also hope there are no bad guys in the split between Imra and Mon-el should they choose that route. It’s a good start with an arranged marriage because they didn’t pick each other. They both deserve to be happy. I also hope Imra’s husband from the comics will factor in because then everyone’s happy.
Also, I’m not sure how much I buy the arranged marriage anyway. Until I get confirmation Imra isn’t messing with Mon-el’s thoughts or anyone else’s it’s all up the air as far as I’m concerned. The moment with Psi is still sticking in my mind.
What other mission could the Legion be here for? Why didn’t they tell Mon-el? Why does he think it’s accident they’re here? Does it have something to do with Imra’s husband from the comics?
Big news! The worldkillers have two sides to their personality! Oh wait, the audience knew that. Congrats to Kara and company for figuring it out.
On the other hand what was up with Alex? I get the cynicism and feeling protective of Kara but that was too much. I had the insane urge to tell her to shut up. Every time Kara started making progress she undercut it threatening Julia. When the worldkillers feel threatened, their not so nice side comes out.
If she hadn’t gotten so in the way nothing bad would have happened. It was strange for her to be so cold and mean, even to Kara. Frankly, it felt ridiculous. It didn’t have any benefits either because her sudden change of mind in the subway felt like a 180, complete with whiplash.
The writers felt like they tossed that in as if to say ‘remember Alex and Maggie just broke up!’ We know they broke up. Alex’s harsh view of the world would have been better right after the break-up. Not eight episodes later. It’s not so fresh anymore. There wasn’t anything to spark a sudden reaction.
I understood what they were trying to do but as an audience member it was just plain uncomfortable to watch. Especially knowing Kara was in the right.
What is the worldkillers’ ultimate endgame? Are they out to destroy the world? I mean it goes with their name but I’ve never understood those kinds of villains. Wouldn’t ruling be more fun then getting rid of everything? Maybe that’s just me.
Sam and Ruby’s mental health day was fun, until it wasn’t. I loved Sam’s “You get precisely one ‘hell yes’ today. I hope you enjoyed that.” Sam is a good mother and a good worker. You can just tell how much pride she puts into everything she does. She strives to be the absolute best she can be at everything. She puts a ton of pressure onto herself and doesn’t like letting anything slip or fall through the cracks. Sam also hates the idea of being a bad mother, something she seems to think frequently.
Truthfully, Lena was right. Sam needed a mental health day. A day where she didn’t worry about work or being a bad mom. A day to have fun and spend it with her daughter. Lena was a perfect friend and boss in this episode.
Not only did she shove her friend out to have a good time and take a much needed and well earned break but she also reminded her this wasn’t punishment. It wasn’t being fired or phased out. It’s a boss knowing the value of a good and healthy employee. As well as a friend being there by keeping the world turning when you need a minute. I loved Lena’s push to take a break.
Unfortunately, the mental health doesn’t go as planned and Ruby is abandoned by Reign at the ice rink. She does the right thing as Lena points out by calling for help. She doesn’t go anywhere. She calls someone she trusts to come be with her.
Lena once again takes the friend and boss award but not scaring Ruby anymore then she already is, instead she insists things will be okay, and she’ll find an answer. She takes Ruby somewhere safe and waits for her friend to return from her latest episode.
I must give Lena credit if she has figured out Sam is also Reign. I want to say she did but I can’t say for certain, after all she is convinced by a pair of glasses Kara isn’t Supergirl. The way Lena said something about the times she blacked out with cross-references she knows something. Wish I knew what.
Some other tidbits from this episode include J’onn’s little talk with Mon-el. I liked him encouraging Mon-el to share his thoughts with Imra. Even if they might hurt, honesty is always the better choice. Trust me, with the way he looks at Kara she’d figure it out anyway.
If they did really develop feelings for each other Imra is calmest wife I’ve ever seen in the face of her husband having feelings for someone else. I hope there’s something else going on here because otherwise I’m going to have trouble believing they could really stay married. They seem about as passionate about each other as I am to do the laundry.
Alright, those are my thoughts on the latest Supergirl. Let me know what you think! We can just talk about it for the next nine weeks to keep ourselves busy! Maybe we won’t notice.
Nah, I’ll definitely notice. Who else can’t wait nine weeks???
