Above might be one of my favorite Critical Role moments of all time.
The absolute chaos of this deeply unexpected but perfectly in character moment is just utterly amazing. Which is once again – thanks to the amazing cast behind it as well as their incredible friendships and comfort with each other.
Because otherwise a moment like this would not be possible.
See the Four-Sided Dive episode that followed this where the cast not only discusses the moment but also discusses that this is not something they suggest surprising people with at the table without discussing it beforehand. It worked here because Marisha and Laura know each other so well and they’ve all been playing together for so long that they’re very comfortable doing these types of things and surprising each other.
However, it’s not recommended for most normal tables because this could make people feel really uncomfortable.
This couple is really special to me because of how unexpected they were.
Both Laura and Marisha went into this campaign deciding to show a strong female friendship. Which is an amazing goal itself and I love that.
I also loved that Marisha was over the epic romance thing after having done it twice before in each campaign.
I can easily see how those took up a lot of bandwidth and it would be nice to just play a character with a focus on other things. Because it should be really easy for two really good female friends to play a strong friendship together. It should make this dynamic easy and require less thought on her part.
Sure, I get it.
But that also made the moment come about so organically with each actress sort of fighting it every step of the way like the characters were. They were so committed to the idea of coming into the campaign as friends and were like hey if romance happens fine, but it’s not something we’re looking for.
In fact, I think Marisha was looking for the opposite of romance.
Even with another actress who played Dust, pretty sure that same actress played someone Beau hooked up with in campaign two. Beau was interested in romance, crushing on Jester, having a one-night stand, and then falling in love with Yasha who she clicked with from the very start. Something that frightened her away from Yasha because she knew it would be serious.
Laudna on the other was completely oblivious to Dust and when she realized that Dust was interested, she quickly wanted to put a stop to all the flirting.
Laudna even says she hasn’t used that part of her brain in many decades and isn’t interested in using it either.
Which leads to her and Imogen sort of circling around each other in a sort of a couple, but not really a couple way that Xena and Gabrielle have going on in season two.
Also, I’m a sucker for the epic.
Imogen willingly carrying around Laudna’s body to find some way to bring her back. The utter heartbreak when they couldn’t save Laudna in the first place. Everything she did to bring her back and face off against Delilah Briarwood. Face off against Vox Machine to bring Laudna back.
Her strength allowing Laudna to finally lock that bitch up in a crystal so she can no longer hurt anyone.
The very fact that Delilah was able to manipulate Laudna because they share one specific viewpoint – they would do anything for the loves of their lives. Delilah once claimed she broke the world for Silas. Imogen and Laudna would more than likely do the same for each other.
Have tried on varying occasions.
Also, Laura Bailey playing a lesbian is just downright amazing.
She was possessed by Imogen so many times during the campaign. Like losing her ever loving mind when it appeared that Laudn was having a good time with Dust while Imogen was still hurting over their fight. Giving her a ring. Asking to kiss her. Calling her a tether.
Like I think Laura Bailey was super excited to have a romantic partner down to be epic with her.
I’m not knocking Talieson or Travis when I say this either by any stretch!
But Travis was super shy the entire second campaign so while Laura got him out of his shell and into doing the romance story with her. It’s not as forthright as it could have been. Definitely not like this ship.
And while I’ve never watched the first campaign, based on the TV series, The Legend of Vox Machina, it appears that her relationship with Percy was more on the forefront. But still a quieter romance. A solid and special romance that fit Vex very well because she needed that steady ship in the storm.
However, I think Laura got to fully lean into the romance and chaos of it with Marisha right there to back her up in the crazy epic romance. Neither of them were afraid to just lean into it and I loved that.
I think we need more of Laura Bailey playing lesbian characters. Also I would love one with her and Ashley now, please and thank you!
This is one of my favorite couples and if you never seen them, you should check out the compilation videos on YouTube. Especially if you don’t have time to watch the entire campaign. They’re epic!
