The Legend of Vox Machina: The Hope Devourer – Review

Okay, it’s just not fair that he can heal himself like that.

Just, screw you, Umbrasyl.

Of course, he is thankfully dead at the end of the episode.

This episode covers a whole lot. From you know, chasing after Umbrasyl, and dealing with his ass. To revealing that Thordak has had an army of baby dragon eggs just waiting to hatch.

So I’m sure that will be good for the world.

It’s not like one dragon nearly killed all of Vox Machina while they had vestiges. I’m sure it’s fine.

Good grief.

Scanlan has a dream he wishes was reality where he’s remembered as a hero and he has a relationship with his daughter and grandchildren. Except it’s just a dream and then he returns to his current nightmare.

Trapped inside a dragon as more and more acid gathers around them.

Slowly, they start tearing their way through the dragon.

I’m not sure where they thought they were going to end up, honestly. He’s flying. Yet they seemed surprised to discover that they were up in the air. Did they think they were still closer to the ground and the battle?

Nope. He flew away.

Should have looked before you leapt.

Not that hanging around in the acid was a good idea either.

You know what? There were just no good options here. I see that.

Grog continues to attack the dragon from the outside and giving him shit that he’s not shaking him. Which – I feel – is something you should never do while on the back of dragon hundreds of feet in the air. But is also wildly in character for Grog. So hey – to each is own.

I get it.

Then he plummets from the sky.

Vex and Keyleth cannot get any of them there in time to catch him, so Grog lands with a disturbing thunk in the ground. Once they reach him, they discover he’s got a few injuries.

Though it probably would have been way worse if he hadn’t remembered the Titanstone knuckles on the way down.

Also in the falling category is Vax and Scanlan.

However, Vex prays to the Raven Queen and she bestows him with wings, so he does not go splat. Which is actually really nice of his patron, because it’s not a one-time use gift. He just has them now.

Pike can only return Grog to health so far before she’s out.

And Scanlan – oddly – as the voice of reason wants to leave and regroup. He fears that Umbrasyl is just too powerful for them.

Vex insists they carry on. There won’t be another opportunity like this where the dragon is weak.

Cut to him healing himself like it never happened in the first place. F*cking Umbrasyl. I am not unhappy to see you go.

Vox Machina does ultimately decide to carry on and attack the dragon. Nearly dying several times over in the subsequent battle. Everyone is injured, hurt, and near death by the time Scanlan delivers the final blow to him.

Which is poetic for a number of reasons.

But mainly because Umbrasyl put their friend’s head on display in his cave.

Jerk.

However, they now have all the gold meant to go to Thordak. Which is good.

It also explains to me why in campaign two, Liam called a decent chunk of money that the Mighty Nein earned and they were excited about, chump change to Vox Machina. That’s a whole lot of gold. Damn. Can I have some please?

I really enjoyed the battle.

When the series opened, they were a disjointed group. One that struggled to fit together and work as a team with any effect. If that team faced Umbrasyl, they would have been much worse off. Probably dead.

However, in this episode, they worked as a team.

Keyleth offering protection from the Earth or well-timed yanks out of the way. Pike and Grog arriving in the nick of time to buy them more time. They worked together. As a group.

They were just super outmatched and tired from the first encounter.

Against an Umbrasyl who had a chance to rest while he waited for them. Not to mention, he was in his lair. Giving him the advantage.

I did agree with Scanlan to a point after the first argument while Umbrasyl was using the sword to see them. They tired and it was not good. He was waiting for them and they’re on his turf. Regrouping might have been a good idea.

On the other hand, I understand Vax too.

They had come this far and they might not get another chance like this. To be so close. To know that this is part of their fate. He sees it. He feels it. He knows what needs to happen.

He’s part of the fabric of fate now.

I can’t really blame either of them for their points of view.

I can be mad at Scanlan for considering ditching his friends when they were all nearly dying to protect each other at the end of the fight there. But he did the right thing. So… I’ll let it slide. For now.

With him dead, they return to Whitestone.

Always Whitestone.

They celebrate the death of the dragon and unhelpfully are reminded that the next to go are far tougher than Umbrasyl.

Seriously? The ones left are worse? Are you kidding me? For real?

That’s just not right. It was so difficult getting rid of this guy. Yeesh. I do not like that.

I also do not like Anna Ripley, the f*cking opportunist in the background trying to pull on as many strings as she can to get what she wants. I do not like her. I do not trust her. And I seriously wish Percy had just shot her back in season one. Might have saved ourselves some trouble.

Then you know, Keeper Yennen is possessed or something by a dragon from the Chroma Conclave who knocks everyone out except for Vox Machina because she wants to make a deal.

You’ll have to forgive my skeptism, but hell no!

No. No. No. No. NO. NO. NO. NO.

I think trusting a dragon is a bad idea. Especially one starting off the conversation by using the face of a friend and drugging other friends. That is not a good way to build trust. No. Nope. Don’t do it.

If she hates Thordak so much she can kill him herself. Until then, this is a trap. A lie. A con. Nope.

Do not want.

Except the voice actress, Cree Summer. Love her. She can stay. Dragon has got to go though.

Then we have dragon babies and it’s time for next season. Yeesh. This was a lot. But it was a very good end to a crazy season. I’m not sure what in the world of Exandria is going to happen next. I’ll just have to keep watching to find out!
