This is the duo I didn’t know I needed!

Forget the former World’s Finest of Superman and Batman – move over boys – we’ve got a new duo in town.

This is an amazing team-up I didn’t know I needed to see until this comic dropped. Everything about this, just makes me so happy. Also including the fact that it appears we’re ignoring One More Day.

I mean, at least that’s how I took it.

And I will not be taking any notes on that. Let me live in blissful ignorance please and thank you.

Anyway, respectfully, the pairing of Clark Kent and Lois Lane are the IT couple of DC Comics. The one everyone aspires to.

On the other side, in Marvel, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson hold that spot for them. They’re the top comic book couples. Often considered soulmates and such.

This comic proudly displays an understanding of each couple and the characters.

The moment when Peter gets Mary Jane back safely on the ground and he hugs her, freaking out a little. I love it. Because Peter will never truly get over or forgive himself for Gwen’s death.

Naturally, every time something that happens akin to that moment, like Mary Jane his current love – dangling off a bridge – he tends to freak out. Understandably so.

It’s a very in character moment. Trauma never truly goes away. It gets easier to deal with, to live with. But it’s part of you now. It’s part of the very fabric of Peter Parker. So, yeah, when those moments occur, he’s going to take a second from the fighting to hug the woman he loves. To know – this time – is not like that time.

It’s also perfectly within character for Mary Jane to accept the affection. To understand Peter Parker like no one else.

They went through losing Gwen together. Bonded together.

Mary Jane’s persona became more serious or at least, Peter saw that part of her she tucks away behind her party persona.

She knows his pain like no one else in the world. Understands how triggering it must all be.

It may even trigger her as well, since this is how her friend died.

She takes the hug. Is there for him. Explains to Lois that he’s got a thing, and you’ll have to forgive him for taking a moment to reassurance himself that Mary Jane is still alive and well. At least, as well as she can be on a bridge under assault.

Then there’s Lois.

Who’s confused over the sudden hugging in the moment when things are going pretty badly. Like excuse you, could you please return to helping my husband?

I mean, based on the conversation she had with Mary Jane in the bus as they dangled, they’re both used to being in dangerous situations. You can look her over after the fight, dude. We’ve got problems right now.

However, she’s also pretty understanding when Mary Jane explains. Oh yes, Clark’s got an old love like that too. Not dead. But one that was incredibly important to him. Still is. Could understand how loves like that leave lasting effects.

I love the sheer casualness of them as well.

Like damn, another day.

I was trying to get somewhere. Had things to do. Appointment to keep. We could let the boys handle it, but… We have places to be, worlds to conquer. Can’t leave it to them.

Thus, they solve it themselves.

Which is very them.

Although, I did not know Mary Jane spoke another language. Huh. Interesting.

Oh, and apparently Lois carries cards with her everywhere she goes.

However, the highlight of the story – for me – is the two of them bonding over their lives.

Not the first time they’ve ever dangled off a bridge. So they compare all the different things they’ve dangled off of. How they don’t even freak out anymore. They just roll with it.

Not to mention, that they were each heading off to do other things before they realized children were trapped on the bus and stopped to help them. Something they noted as well. They stayed while everyone else ran off.

They can’t not stay.

They can’t run.

They’ve fallen in love with a stubborn dude in red and blue tights. They can no longer run away. Nor would they want to.

It’s a unique love that they share. One they can’t just walk away from. Even if it’s lonely from time to time because no one else can really understand. Why these powerful superheroes choose these women. When they have no powers of their own.

Because of this. Right here.

They see someone in trouble and they must help.

Just like Clark and Peter.

They can’t run.

Can’t walk away.

Peter says they’re responsible for the people they love. But it works both ways.

Mary Jane and Lois claim responsibility for them. Those women are why they do what they do. To make the world safer for them. And in turn, those women are their safe spaces.

A place to retreat from all the stress of the world.

These women are heroes too.

Smart and strong. Unafraid in the face of death and danger, to stand up for what they believe in. To run towards danger because some kids need help. To help their heroes when they need it. To be there for them. Because in turn, they’ll be there for them.

It’s unlike anything else.

Mary Jane and Lois understand Peter and Clark in a way no one else ever will. And that’s something truly special.

I really love this comic. As they save the day. Even if the boys were the ones holding off the giant robot or eventually took it down. The women are brains and the heart of everything here.

I love that they joke with each other and support each other. Reading Lois’ work or Lois keeping up with Mary Jane’s career.

The understanding that passes through them, that there’s nothing they can do. They’re in this with these men. It’s exciting and crazy and wonderful and terrifying. But it’s theirs. No matter what.

I – honestly – would take an entire series of these two.

Seriously, a duo of heart and humor and bravery I didn’t know I needed in my life, but now I need more of it. Please! Marvel, DC, please make it happen!
