To say I had no clue this was even a thing, would be an understatement.
Like – what did I just see?
I’m not going to lie. It took me way too long to understand what I was seeing and the need to Google it several times to double check also happened.
Because I – for sure – thought this was some fan made AI, deep fake BS I was seeing on YouTube.
There was no way it could be real. This wasn’t a real thing. It couldn’t be.
After all, watching the trailer made me feel like I was in some sort of fever dream.
Yet somehow – there it was.
Coming to Prime Video in May. May 27th to be specific.
Nicholas Cage is suiting up as Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir, produced by Sony on Amazon Prime Video. And no amount of staring at those words makes it true in my head.
Because I don’t recall a hint or a notion that this was even a thing. Which is why I so wanted to dismiss it at first at something fake or some sort of fan made wishful thinking. Except, no. It’s not.
Apparently, it’s been in production for years and it’s finally coming to screens in May.
While finally to some people, suddenly to me.
Not on my Bingo card for 2026, let me tell you that.
However, now after watching the trailer several more times… well, I’m still not sure what to think.
Historically, Sony starts out strong with their attempts to utilize Spider-Man and his universe of characters and then tank it. Forgive me for being a bit skeptical they could get this right.
Although, I am interested in discovering more of Ben Reilly’s story as the black and white noir Spider-Man of his universe. I don’t know much beyond what we’ve gotten through Into the Spiderverse and his brief visit to Ultimate Spider-Man’s TV show.
Just little bits and pieces.
Which also appears to be what is happening to his mind in the show.
The entire trailer feels like a fever dream. Just one wild ride of me wondering what on Earth is happening and whether or not this guy should be allowed out in public. He might be a danger to himself and others.
Although, that might be the point as well.
Clearly, he’s a jaded man with a few screws loose. But hey – which Spidey doesn’t have a few screws loose?
I looked up the wiki page for the show and know Ben Reilly will be joined by others with semi-familiar names and others who are not so familiar as well. I’m really curious to see how well this show does.
People seem split between being excited and cautious or just downright certain this is doomed to fail.
Honestly, I don’t think the trailer looked that bad. Although Nicholas Cage may not have been my first choice to play Ben Reilly/Spider, but it also somehow works…?
Mostly.
I mean, he’s definitely a better fit for this character than he was for any version of Superman. That’s for damn sure.
I like the idea that you can watch in black and white or full color. It’s a nice little play on the theme. As well as making the color look like a colorized TV, instead of just normal color. It’s a nice touch.
The swinging in the series looks a little wonky to me and I can’t help but wonder if that’s just me or if someone else noticed that too.
Regardless, Spider-Noir is going into my calendar to be watched when it drops. Whether I watch the entire series or not hinges on that first episode. So I hope it brings everything it’s got to convince me to watch seven more episodes.
What do you guys think? Are you going to watch it? Are you interested? Mildly interested? Or do you think it’s doomed to fail? Drop me a line in the comments.
