The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Mrs. X at the Gaslight – Review

Oh, remember that little record place Midge was taken to by Susie?

They’ve got all the things that no one else has in their little basement. Stuff you can’t find anywhere else. Well, they’ve just added Miriam to their collection. Unknowingly, they’ve already met the newest addition.

Instead of writing her name, they write Mrs. X at the Gaslight. Hence the title of the episode.

They’re impressed and add her to the collection. Without even knowing it, her popularity and reach is growing. Even though she’s not doing anything to facilitate it at the moment.

Instead, she’s performing – for free – at varies parties.

And I’m torn on whether to agree with Susie that they’re only laughing along with her because it’s polite while they hope she stops talking. Because for the most part, people seemed genuinely interested. Like the people who yelled at everyone to shush while she told the ex-boyfriend story.

Loved the part where her mother is like, the fence isn’t that high.

The older people seemed more in the polite phase.

There’s a part of me that agrees with Susie, but there’s also a part of me that thinks this was a perfect way to rebuild her confidence before getting back on stage. Even if people are only laughing out of being polite, it’s worth the confidence boost it gives to Miriam to return to the stage.

After all, getting laughs is getting laughs, and sometimes you need a snowball to work your way out of funk.

It happens.

I’d be more concerned if Miriam never returns to the stage.

However, she is still interested in it and shares such with Susie. Although, she doesn’t seem to realize that someone was trying to poach her from Susie.

Susie noticed.

And took matters into her own hands.

I do think it was a nice ego boost that Midge needed to get back on stage.

Even though she was flattered by their proposal and her interest in the other comic – professionally – it had to be nice to be told she could do this by someone other than Susie after she bombed. To be able to perform in a safe place with some guaranteed laughs and have professionals give her praise helped her realize she does want to do this.

I loved that Midge and Susie came to a deal at the end.

Not only as somewhat friends who help each other with their shit but decided to formalize their partnership.

This also felt like a commitment in more than just words. As Miriam has been one foot in and one foot out this entire time. This felt like her truly committing to making this work for the both of them.

I loved that they talked.

It was complicated and weird and hard, but it needed to be done for the both of them. To ensure they’re on the same page. Together.

Elsewhere, in the episode we have Abe getting a job he always wanted at Bell Labs. I have to admit – he did play it cool when they were trying to recruit him. I did think he wasn’t interested only to discover he was beyond interested. With that type of coolness, he could get anything he wanted out of those people.

They told him as much.

Fools.

Nicely done Abe.

I can see – in part – where your daughter gets some of her skills. Some.

I loved how happy his entire family was when he announced it to them. Even if they couldn’t drop everything to celebrate then and there, they were so excited for him.

The moment he wanted Noah and Astrid to come celebrate with them was sweet. I actually thought it was his two other children, but to discover it was his daughter-in-law made the moment all the more special.

He wanted to share his victory with the whole family. To celebrate with the whole family and it includes Astrid.

I come from a family where marrying into it, didn’t always make you family. Thus, it always warms my heart when I see it portrayed as a unified family rather than some interloper. Very nice moment.

Then we get to meet Noah and Astrid.

Apparently, Astrid converted to their religion to make Rose happy and truly be part of the family. Despite assurances from Midge that Rose loves her, she still feels like she’s not accepted.

Truthfully, I think they’d accept her more if she stopped trying so hard. I think they find that more annoying than anything. Like, please be yourself a bit, dear.

Astrid reveals to Midge that while she believes she’s doing everything ‘right’ she fears Noah will leave her like Joel left Midge. Pointing out that Midge did everything ‘right’ and it didn’t help.

Screw this time period and ‘right.’ Thank you very much.

Why is all on the woman? Why can’t the man do his part? He promised to love and cherish the wife just like she promised to love and cherish him on their wedding day. Why is all up to her to make it work?

But he can sleep with his secretary and somehow that’s his wife’s fault?

Nope. Nope. Don’t care for that shit.

On the other hand, it led to two lovely moments as Midge comforted Astrid. Pointing out that Noah married up and he knows it. He loves her and would never do something like that. He’s her brother and she knows. While it helps Astrid, she’s still worried.

To help, Midge brings it up with her brother, asking him to please never do this to his wife. To which Noah instantly responds that he would never. Even though she’s driving him up the wall with the conversion and that he might leave her, especially since they haven’t been able to conceive.

To which he doesn’t care, he’ll adopt. He just wants her.

He wants her to be happy.

Even if it means he goes insane.

I loved that moment. Because he felt completely honest and genuine in the love he has for his wife. That he’s tried with words to convince her, so he’s resorted to showing up every day as he promised to prove it.

Love it.

I even love that Midge didn’t get mad that Astrid couldn’t resist kissing the baby.

Oops.

Noah is a gem of the episode.

He appears – by all accounts – to be a male version of Miriam with just a touch less of a spine. She’s definitely more fearless of the two.

But he’s a good man.

He loves his wife, his family, and his sister.

The moment in the restaurant where he’s just absolutely sickened at the sight of Joel. Then to notice he’s there with the woman he cheated on his sister with. He just hates it. All of it.

Within moments, he’s getting a cab, and trying to be there for his sister in whatever way she wants him to be.

I love that he wanted to defend her honor, but he knew he would fail. He’d try. But he wouldn’t be able to. He’s a sweet man. His reaction in the restaurant was a highlight for me.

It cements that he would never hurt his wife no matter what happens.

This also showcased that he wishes to defend his sister even if she doesn’t need it. I find it sweet. He’s offended on her behalf. He wants to leave or shout at him or get the cab or stay. Whatever makes his sister happy. I loved that while he wanted to defend her, he let her decide what it would look like.

I think that’s the best showcase of care.

You can be outraged and offended and defensive of someone, but you allow them to decide what version they want. Shout? Yell? Hug? Get them out of there as fast as possible?

I love that.

Joel following her outside, I did not need.

However, I enjoyed how bored and annoyed he looked at dinner. Not so fun, dating someone without brains, is it? There’s nothing to talk about, and you may need to teach her to use a fork. How fun.

Overall, a fantastic episode that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and makes me happy I didn’t stop watching three episodes ago.
