Look out is right!
Supergirl will be landing in theaters later this year in June on the 26th to be specific! We have our first real trailer of her movie after her very short intro in the Superman Movie from this past summer.
And well… I don’t know what I’m looking at but every viewing of the trailer kind of just makes me more excited that I don’t know what to expect.
Such as the same thing with the Superman movie trailer dropping in December 2024, I had no idea what to expect from the new movie. The new direction, director, or actor. Nothing. I didn’t even want to try and hazard a guess either because I just wanted to hope and pray it would be good.
That it would blow me away.
And it did.
So much.
Which is why I’m not going to guess what is going to happen, I just want to talk about what we saw.
A new take on Kara Zor-El. A now 23-year-old woman who lost everything she ever knew and was sent off to the same planet as her cousin – more than likely having arrived after him. He’s grown up and become a beacon of hope who sees the good in people. And will, Kara witnessed the end of her world.
However, it happened. She’s traumatized and drinking the pain away.
It seems the movie may take place off world which will be kind of good for her. I doubt in addition to all her issues she wants to feel second best to Superman on Earth.
Especially since he’s more than likely supposed to be younger than her.
Things I did like.
On the newspaper Krypto pees on, there’s an article about Supergirl rescuing cats from trees. So she has exposed her existence the to world enough that she’s landed in the Daily Planet.
She loves her dog very much.
The little moment of her stroking his face while he sleeps and she watches her pet with such affection is amazing. Like I’ve done that so many times with my little girl and now my little boy that it hit me right in the gut. For that, I need only one thing to happen. Krypto must also make it out of this movie alive and the rest of the DCU as well.
James Gunn! Do not let me down!
I love that Supergirl loves him so much.
She’s even moderately attempting to train him as well. He’s supposed to pee on the paper. She’s trying. Someone please tell Superman and Gary she’s attempting some boundaries for the doggy.
It looks like we’re getting a space epic, which is totally fine with me. It also appears that Kara will be given the origin story rather than Superman, which works. While we think that Krypton shaped Superman, the truth is Earth shaped him even more.
The movie this past summer proves his adopted parents were the ones giving him his ideals and shaping him into the man he became. Not Krypton.
While Kara remembers it.
Her life.
It’s destruction.
Which if her words are anything to go by – doesn’t even happen in a day.
Maybe Krypton dies slowly. Who knows? We’ll find out when the movie comes out. But the thing that is truly clear is how much those experiences have shaped her into who we meet. The Kara who remembers her planet, her family, her entire culture, and watched it vanish from the world.
Seemingly quite painfully as well.
Her story in the comics typically tells us she and Kal-El leave at the same time but something, somewhere prevents her from arriving with him. Ultimately, arriving years later while he’s fully grown. Thus, rendering her purpose to find and protect her cousin void.
Instead, he’s protecting her.
I imagine all these things play a role in how she’s living now.
Which I really love the take on her character.
That if I watched my world crumble to dust and lost everything, I ever knew in one fell swoop and had to start over, I think I’d react like that as well. Drinking the pain away and trying to forget. Not staring at the one person who reminds her of the loss and that she couldn’t even help him. She wasn’t there for him either.
These were details the TV show – Supergirl – touched on. There’s a moment when Kara screams at the hologram of her mother about her pain of being left. Sent away. And she heat visions the image until Alex pulls her away.
I truly wished they had leaned more into how lonely Kara must feel remembering her world. She can’t even share those memories with Kal-El like other people would. Because he doesn’t remember it. Only what he’s read or been told. No one lived it with her. No one alive.
I truly hope this movie leans into that and gives a really meaty tale.
I’m excited! Are you excited for Supergirl this summer?
Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
