Superhero Sunday – Let’s Play Catch Up

Alright, alright, alright, let’s catch up on everything I’ve been missing for the last few months!

The summer of superheroes landed!

Superman dropped early July and the Fantastic Four: First Steps dropped late July!

Each were tasked with very important jobs this summer, launch or relaunch their universes, and get people hyped for more superhero movies.

Superman proves that superhero fatigue isn’t a thing. It dares to be bold and bright and launch the DCU regardless of critics or anything else. It’s a comic book movie and it’s damn proud of it!

I will do a more in-depth review of it in the upcoming weeks!

Fantastic Four: First Steps is a lovely outing, but it breaks no new ground. It’s a Marvel movie at its core, playing it safe on themes Marvel knows have played well in the past. It didn’t hurt the MCU as some other outings have in the past, but it doesn’t relaunch the MCU, and excite anyone for what comes next.

Supergirl – Look out!

Post Superman’s successful summer, we know that Supergirl will be flying into theaters next summer on June 26! She’s revealed at the end of the movie this year and to everyone’s shock appears to be little like a Kara we recognize.

In fact, instead of ‘Look Up’ the tagline for Superman’s movie this summer, it’s time to ‘Look Out’ for Supergirl.

The simple word change and image of the sprayed painted warning over Superman’s has me excited for what comes next. Because I can totally see how Kara is where she is after losing everything she has ever known and arriving after Kal-El is already grown. Can’t wait!

But Supergirl is next year, and we still have plenty to look forward to right now.

Peacemaker season 2 is currently dropping weekly on HBO Max.

Peacemaker even made a cameo in the Superman movie, tying the universes together, despite Peacemaker originally being in the Snyderverse.

Peacemaker is a series I haven’t seen yet, but I love that each character is allowed the tone they’re meant to have. Superman is light, and Peacemaker isn’t.

I’m looking forward to catching up and when I do, you’ll hear all about it!

Spider-Man 4 is currently filming.

Even if I might the MCU to slow down and think before it continues filming, we’ve got a Spider-Man movie on the way.

Set photos have surfaced of Tom Holland dressed as the character so we’ll see how that lands in the next couple years.

I have decided on no expectations.

Also coming up this year, we have an official drop date for the physical release of Superman!

September 23rd! While digital is already available, I want to add the physical version to my movie collection!

I cannot wait for this arrival, and I’ll be at the store first thing in two days to get it.

Also, Fantastic Four: First Steps is coming out later this year though at the time of writing this, it was still a tentative date for October. So, I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

In news drops we have a pretty big one that happened not too long ago, Superman was given a sequel title and date.

Man of Tomorrow will be the sequel to Superman, dropping July 9th, 2027 almost two years to the date of the first movie’s release.

James Gunn dropped the title, the release date, and a picture of the current Superman (his logo matches the movie) with an armored-up Lex Luthor.

People have been speculating like crazy about what this means.

It could mean they’re fighting to save the world together.

It could mean Lex breaks out of prison to kill him.

It could mean something with the title as well because Lex Luthor certainly believed himself to be the true Man of Tomorrow. There could be a play on words here.

There could be so much to this.

But the only thing I can think of is… Don’t screw this up.

Please, please, please, James Gunn, put the same love and care as you did into the first movie. Don’t just make something to make a sequel. Tell me a wonderful story, just like the first movie.

Also, I’m super psyched to see that we are not rid of Lex Luthor because Nicholas Hoult was amazing.

Also getting a release date is The Batman Part 11.

The first movie was an amazing outing for Batman, so I’m excited to see where the next one goes. However, I will be getting a Superman sequel before the Batman sequel even though The Batman was out first.

I’m not sure how that happened, but regardless I’m excited to see more of this character.

Catch me in the theaters come October 7th, 2027.

Can’t wait!

Finally, after this summer where two movies were meant to make or break their universes – will the MCU continue to survive while the DCU thrives?

The DCU has been the talk of the town this summer.

No matter how many commercials Marvel and Disney try to convince us otherwise that their movie was the blockbuster of the summer, Superman dominated the conversation.

If you’re mad about it, see Lex Luthor from the movie, because he’s mad too.

Superman got rave reviews, with Fantastic Four were mixed at best.

Fantastic Four: First Steps was meant to help jumpstart the MCU’s current phase and relaunch them to tip top they’ve been chasing since Endgame.

Except it really didn’t.

Outside the week of release, there wasn’t a lot of chatter.

But no one has stopped talking about Superman.

It’s current. It’s bright. It’s happy. It’s filled with hope for a better tomorrow. It broke new ground in wanting to make the world a better place. I left the theater inspired and hope filled.

With Fantastic Four, they once again make it about family, and humanity’s worst. That we will turn on each other in the worst of circumstances. Well, no one needs that right now.

We needed Superman.

And so does the MCU. I mean, not him exactly because there’s so many copyrights and the company’s issues, probably not going to be a thing. But they need a hope driven character to pave the way for them.

Or something new and unique like they were when they dropped Ironman.

Right now? They’re telling the same story, and we’ve all heard it. We’re bored and want something new.

Will the MCU survive? I don’t know.

Will the DCU survive? It’s looking pretty damn good right now.

Anyway, thanks for reading! See you next week! Spread the love and read on!
