Xeque Mate 2×01 – Review

Xeque Mate is back!

And with it, well, uh stuff happens. I don’t know. This show is weird, alright! Let’s talk a walk.

Giovanna starts off by talking to someone about someone. Is it family? I think so, I think it’s her sister, and they’re talking about their father.

I’m taking an educated guess based on what I remember from the fic I read from this series and the context clues provided.

Then Maya or Manu or whatever we’re calling her today shows up.

Maybe Giovanna is hiding a woman in her bedroom.

Nope. Just a murder board.

You know, like you do.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised to walk into anyone’s home these days and just find a murder board chilling there. True crime podcasts and shows are so freaking popular. I mean, where I work, we had one of the Morbid podcasters in to sign her book. The line went around the building. For four hours.

Everyone is a true crime junkie at this point.

Maya shouldn’t have been surprised.

Nor should she be surprised that she’s a suspect.

I mean, she’s pretty suspicious.

Her best friend is doing some shady stuff, we’ve see little tidbits about that. And we’ve seen her be so cold and get someone fired for going on a date with the woman she’s cheating on her husband with.

Also, in the first season she drugged her husband so she could have sex with her bodyguard out in the open of her house.

I’d be surprised if she wasn’t a suspect.

However, Maya wants to be off the suspect board and offers to help with the investigation further by arranging for them to go to Switzerland. Something about a bank.

I don’t know.

Honestly, I love that this should is basically smut with some vaguely shaped plot points happening.

Which is why Giovanna is so hilarious and wonderful to me to watch because she seems to be the only one taking their job seriously here. In show and out of show.

Not to say the other actors aren’t doing a good job, they are. It’s just so funny to me that Giovanna is being played like a detective who happens to have hot steamy sex with another hot woman.

While literally everyone else is like, people are here for the sex. We’re just furthering the plot holding this shit together, nothing major.

Everyone else is playing characters revolving around the hot couple and knows it. While the actress playing Maya leans into the sex and sin of the show as the forefront, the actress playing Giovanna doesn’t.

Detective, then sex.

Instead of sex, then plot.

It’s totally amusing because it fits so well with Giovanna’s character. Who while she clearly can’t entirely control her impulses when it comes to Maya, it annoys her. Because she wants to be a good detective and solve the case. She wants to get ahead in her career and doesn’t want anything to get in her way.

But she still can’t stop herself and it bothers her that she cannot get a grip.

Like she means it when she says she’s there for work and not a romantic getaway. That takes a backseat to her job.

Although, she does enjoy herself.

And I love that about the actress’ choice to play it that way because it works so well.

So, we’re off to ‘another’ country. Which is convincing, but I’m pretty sure it’s still Brazil underneath the nice dressings. It’s amazing for a web series that I don’t think traveled outside its own country to make it work.

Then the police boss tries and fails to be intimidating.

He’s all grrrr, bring me a lead like he’s never worked a police investigation in his life.

Because I’m fairly certain nothing is ever solved in like 20 minutes because your boss shouted at you to bring him results. I don’t know, I’m just saying.

Investigations take time.

Effort.

Things like what Giovanna is doing, going to the bank, and getting information through correct channels.

Which like all things in life takes time and red tape and bullshit making it take way longer than it should.

So yeah, I don’t think shouting at her team will move anything along.

Nor do I think they really care because they know he’s not really in charge of anything.

Christopher is. He owns that man.

So, like yeah, he yelled, and he has some authority but they’re looking for the crooks. And if that includes their boss so be it.

Also, quick thing, why was no one else creeped out by Maya knowing where Giovanna lived?

Like that was glossed over so quickly.

Giovanna asked and Maya was like I have a file on everyone who works for me.

Well shit, that sounds creepy as hell lady that you could just access those any time you like for whatever reasons you like. Like no.

Like that info is under strict lock and key where I work with only one person having access to it at any time. My big boss. The woman in charge of us all has the key and only her. Makes sense. And she doesn’t use that knowledge just to appear at my house.

I mean, it would be hard given that it’s burnt rubble at the moment, but hey, you know what I mean.

I feel like as a cop there should have been a moment where Giovanna goes, ‘hey, I think that’s abuse of power, you creeper.’

Apparently, that’s just me.

Is it because she’s hot? Or they’re sleeping together? Does that make it okay?

I don’t think it does but tell me in the comments. I’m curious.

And last, but most certainly not least they need to stay an extra couple of days for red tape.

Which is like my favorite plot device because it’s so damn true. Like there’s nothing you can do at a bank or government building or insurance company where you can’t plausibly say it’ll take two more days for some bullshit and not believe it. Because we’ve all be there.

Need to make a claim? Guy who does that is on vacation.

Need to file this paperwork? Didn’t sign your full name properly. Do it again.

There are so many stupid reasons paperwork takes longer than it should and is the most believable of the delays you can have in storytelling. I love it, because you can use it repeatedly in stories like this and it works. Every time.

Love it.

No notes on that delay to keep them on their romantic getaway longer.

Which of course was followed up by lots of kissing and I’m sure some upcoming steamy scenes.

Regardless, this was an entertaining opener that ended too quickly for my taste. Like come on! I need more of this weirdly entertaining soap opera style show that I just can’t stop watching no matter what my girlfriend says.

Love you baby!

Well, until next week! Thanks for reading! Spread the love and read on!
