Xena Warrior Princess: The Quest – Review

I’m going to just quote my girlfriend here – “What’s more gay than being inside your best friend?”

WTF.

WTF.

That sentence out of her mouth did me in, never mind the episode itself. Which my girlfriend has decided this episode is their wedding.

Holy cow.

Xena struggled every moment to get back to Gabrielle while the latter mourned every moment without her. Feeling an aching emptiness like she’s never known before inside her without Xena. Something later filled by Xena herself during a fight where Gabrielle felt safe, warm, and loved.

During a fight.

Which I get in some ways what Gabrielle is saying.

Xena had a lot more than her life on the line while fighting Vaseline. My name for the evil wannabe queen. Don’t ask.

She was fighting for Gabrielle too as this was her body she was using at the time. If she fell to her death, well her death wouldn’t be the only one she caused in that moment.

Something we know all too well that Xena will never stand for is letting Gabrielle die.

But also, everything about this episode was full on romance.

Gabrielle jumped on top of the coffin with Xena in it. The ambrosia was in her freaking bra. They were struggling and fighting every moment to protect each other whether they knew it or not. They recognized each other no matter what face they were wearing.

Which is some soulmate shit right there.

It was one of my favorite plots in Smallville that Clark could be possessed and Lana would never notice a thing. She – in fact – live with an imposter for a month and never noticed it wasn’t Clark. Meanwhile, Clark was replaced for all of five seconds one episode and Lois sounded every alarm in the world declaring that wasn’t Clark Kent and battened down the hatches.

And guess what? They’re soulmates. Lovers. Meant to be. Destined for each other.

It’s been said time and time again in every version, they end up together.

This is the level I’m talking about for Gabrielle and Xena this episode. Willing to go through hell and back to be together.

Willing to fend off bad guys and anyone else who dares to get in the way.

Like, what’s more couplish than that?

How could you deny it?

How could you deny they’re in love with each other?

One, I think both have come to the realization of.

At least, Xena knows what Gabrielle truly feels now. She felt it herself, heard it right from Gabrielle’s mind. And while Gabrielle might not understand that it was love and not just friendship and normal adoration, Xena does.

And the very minute she sees her again, she decides to act on it.

Because she fu*king kisses her!

Kisses her!

Kisses her!

Let me say that again – kisses her.

And you can try to explain the gay away all you like, but I’m not listening because you’re in denial. Plain and simple.

Xena realized that Gabrielle does have feelings for her, but is a baby gay, and has no idea what it all means. But Xena, a little more worldly, and a bit more experience knows exactly what Gabrielle is feeling. She’s feeling it too.

And she promises that she’ll always be with her right before leaning in.

Autolycus didn’t do it.

I’m not even sure he put his hand there. I think it may have been Xena. Just saying. And she smacked him for keeping it there.

Autolycus wasn’t in control, he was as confused as Gabrielle was for a moment.

As Gabrielle pulled away and expected to see Xena standing there and instead saw Autolycus instead and remembered they needed to get her body back first.

But I also think she was confused because everything just sort of slotted into a place she never expected before. The kiss blew her mind. Opened doors and feelings she’d never really realized were romantic and now…

Now it was all slamming into her at once.

She’s a queen.

She’s being chased by the Amazons right now.

They have to put Xena back in her body.

Xena just kissed her.

And she enjoyed it. She let it happen. She was pleased by it.

Damn. That’s a lot to take in at that moment. I don’t blame her for being confused by everything.

But that kiss. Made it on screen. I thought they were pushing the boundaries two episodes ago, but here we are. Pushing them further and further. They got away with it. With showing the queer community what they wanted. Catering to them and giving them a powerful storyline when no one else would.

Someone convincing everyone this is straight.

Honestly, I don’t even think I need to highlight how things are gay anymore. They just are.

And if you don’t see it, I’m not sure why you’re here. This isn’t for you. This is for the queer community and our enjoyment. If you see things differently and wish to be a supporter of what someone else sees nonetheless, you’re welcome to join.

However, if you want to be a jerk, please exit.

Thank you.

Overall, this episode was fantastic.

Autolycus is amazing. I will also take him over Joxer. But I also love Bruce Campbell to pieces and love watching this crazy man.

Then there’s the Amazons, which are always a nice time. I’m not sure how we’re going to deal with the whole queen thing after this, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out.

I’m a little surprised more didn’t side with Ephiny. She seems like a strong leader there, but I am really impressed by those who did stand with her and Gabrielle. That took guts.

And it didn’t feel – to me – like the others were siding against Gabrielle, but more like hedging their bets. You know what I mean?

I loved Autolycus trying to steal Xena’s body.

Trying to explain Xena is inside him.

Like anyone would believe that.

Him stealing the body. Gabrielle just jumping onto the coffin to go for a ride.

Gabrielle beating up the jerks at the beginning. Also, I will admit for a solid moment, I thought Gabrielle was just taking Xena around Greece with her for the rest of her life instead of burying her somewhere because she couldn’t stand to be without her.

Like, yeah. I get that.

But also… Weird.

Being reminded that Gabrielle promised Xena in season one that her dying wish was to be buried with her brother was a good choice. And a nice callback to how far Gabrielle is gone for her.

Also, I love how the other dude from Hercules showed up, discovered Xena was dead having no knowledge of it while everyone else in the world did. Then to be like, well bye. Gots to tell Hercules before everyone else.

The Amazons. Warlords. Autolycus. Bandits. All of them knew. Not him.

I’m sure no one has told Hercules by now. We’re also going to have to send another message.

JK. She’s alive.

Like dude, could you put that aside and tell him later? Gabrielle needs some help getting the body to her hometown safely without being jumped every five minutes.

Then my girlfriend goes, “All I heard was he needed to get back to his boyfriend.”

I had no argument with that. She’s right.

However, onto the next episode. Can’t wait to see what happens with Vaseline lady who appears she may have still been alive after getting impaled.

Apparently, she’s Olaf.
