This couple is based on a real one!
One that actually got married and lived together in a time when that was hugely unaccepted.
The amount of courage it took both women to actively choose to do these things and be together in that time is nothing short of amazing.
Truly.
And I know that Ann Walker is knocked a lot for seemingly or even being taken advantage of by Anne Lister, but um no.
She understood exactly how dangerous it was. She refused and hesitated because of it. She knew they needed to be careful and that people couldn’t know everything because it was severely frowned upon. But she still did it.
Unlike every other woman that Anne Lister tried to get to take a vow and be with her forever.
Ann Walker actually did it.
She took a vow and meant it. She didn’t take it back or walk away. She was with Anne Lister until the day Anne died.
That’s huge and amazing for the time period. For a woman who was treated the way she was by her family.
Because here’s the thing – no matter how everyone wants to portray her. As stupid, less than, or naive, or someone that Anne Lister didn’t love like her longtime flame. I don’t think any of it is true.
Ann Walker owned her estate. She ran it before Anne Lister showed up.
Sure, her family used her naivete against her for their own gain, but Anne helped her stand up on her own feet, and push back.
Which she does.
Constantly after that.
She evens pushes Anne herself. “Put your watch away.”
She’s strong and fierce and kind and loving. She’s everything Anne needs. Everything she wants.
And Anne is everything Ann needs and wants.
They’re sort of perfect for each other.
And while I think Mariana holds a place in Anne’s heart, Ann owned the rest.
One is a first love, but the other is a true love.
Throughout the first season, I’m enamored with the way Anne falls in love with Ann. It’s slow and sweet, until she turns around one day, and realizes the woman she never intended to fall for is perfect for her.
Ann is sweet and makes her smile and laugh. They can talk for hours. Ann needs someone to push her out of her comfort zone and Anne needs stability that Ann provides by offering a new point of view to her.
Even pushing her when she gets the chance.
I know the show was cancelled, but the two seasons we do have are still worth the watch! So if you haven’t checked out this couple, get to it!

Another show cut down too soon, showcasing a young teenager coming into herself with her non-binary person, and figuring out young love together.
