Alright, I have to admit, this couple totally came out of left field on me!
I was not expecting to love them, or this show as much as I do!
It’s so good, with such a wonderful slow burn that is utterly amazing and ridiculously wonderful with a crazy plot going on in the background.
I still remember watching the first episode, fully knowing that in season three, they hook-up, and end up together. The fourth season wasn’t out yet.
I went into it not really knowing what to expect while watching the first episode. And I’ll admit, I almost – almost turned it off.
Harley’s initial relationship and attachment to the Joker was utterly sickening in the first episode. It was beyond clear that he was using her every step of the way and didn’t really care for her the way she cared for him. She was a tool for him to use and abuse as he saw fit.
Nothing more.
I wanted to vomit or punch Joker.
But Ivy! Ivy’s enduring friendship to Harley was something so amazing. It tethered the show and me to it.
Because like me, she could have walked away. She could have written Harley off as unable to save her. But she doesn’t.
Harley and Ivy have each other’s backs.
They’re friends.
And unlike the Joker, they actually give a damn about each other. They would do anything for each other. Even if they don’t quite understand why the other is doing what they’re doing – they show up.
Like that’s a huge thing that most people can’t do, never mind villains.
But they’ve decided that the other is worth it, even if the rest of the world is shit.
And that’s sweet.
But then, we get to Harley beating the crap out of Joker, and taking her life back, piece by piece. I love this story. I love Harley figuring her shit out, with the support of her best friend in the world.
Only for her to figure out that she wants Ivy.
Except that confuses Ivy.
Not that I ever thought she’d actually keep dating Kiteman(?) or even coming close to marrying him. Ever.
And I love that Harley was willing to sacrifice her happiness with Ivy if she thought her friend would be happy with the other dude.
I did enjoy his ‘Hell no’ on the wedding day. Because he wasn’t wrong. He was fighting to get Ivy every step of the way while she just seemed mildly interested, but ultimately Harley came first. Whenever it mattered, she was there for her friend.
I truly enjoy this chaotic couple.
I loved their storyline in season four where one is trying to be good while the other is literally running all of the evil people in the world. Like yeah, I can see how that might cause conflict at home.
Especially when they stop talking.
Their daughter was hilarious, and I hope that we get to see that play out some more. Because that was just too much fun.
Can you imagine them being moms?
I could watch an entire show of that. I swear.
Overall, I love that they try to support each other. They show up for each other. They know each other. And when they feel like they’re not being heard or respected, they discuss it. Or take over a city, then discuss it.
Honestly, this relationship is a little dysfunctional and healthy at the same time. I have no idea how that works, but I enjoy the dynamic too much to care. It’s sweet, funny, sexy, and loving. With all the action we could ever need.
I can’t wait to see what happens next for this couple!
How about you?
