Pride – Carol & Maria – 2024

A lovely family!

Alright, I’m newer to this fandom!

But I have quickly gotten hooked.

In 2019 I saw Captain Marvel in the theaters three times. A friend of mine, who has loved Captain Marvel her entire life, was like Carol and Maria are totally a gay couple.

I remember just agreeing with her. Like, I can see it. I can. It makes sense. Fits perfectly in the narrative.

But Disney would never go there.

Cut to watching The Marvels and being reminded of the complicated family dynamic of Auntie Carol and Lieutenant Trouble. I was doomed.

I managed not to fall into the rabbit hole in 2019, but five years later, they got me.

Honestly, they’ve always had me. I agreed with my friend. These two are totally in love with each other.

This relationship is played out in the background and the sheer emotions we get from the two movies from each woman and their daughter.

Because Monica is totally their daughter.

I mean, seriously. How else do you see this?

Carol was there for Monica’s life. In the new movie, she calls her family. No, she doesn’t call her mom. But remember when the movie was set and their jobs testing planes out for the Air Force. Carol couldn’t be called Mom as well.

They wouldn’t have their careers. It was a different time in history.

But Carol was there when she went to bed. She was there for Christmas. She was there for Monica’s life before she was Vers and then Captain Marvel.

In The Marvels, you can see everything Monica means to her. She treats her like a daughter. Not a niece. She loves her.

She would have risked everything to keep her safe.

She’s house sitting for her.

Maria kept the cat for her.

I mean, these two are as gay Gabrielle and Xena. I’m just saying.

I don’t care about the little story of racing over first thing in the morning. She could have been across the hall pounding on the door, pretending she slept in another room. Maria could have been lying since Carol didn’t remember anything and she was afraid to freak her out.

Maybe she thought Carol wouldn’t understand without her memories. Without her feelings.

I don’t know. I could make a narrative for it. I could piece it together and that’s the best part. It’s open for twisting and turning to make it mean what I want.

Also, these two are adorably domestic together.

I loved their scene in The Marvels when the cancer returned. You could see the pain on Carol’s face while Maria tried to be realistic about things.

I love this little family.

And I cannot wait to see how Carol and Monica reunite. Not to mention what happens with the different version of Maria.

Whew.

Also, since Disney is too afraid to say what everyone is thinking, everyone on AO3 will say it for them. I have fallen down the rabbit hole of fics and I’m sure you’ll see them popping up on my fanfic recs!

If you haven’t checked out this couple, you should! They’re an honorary members of the Pride Couple Lists!
