13 – Force Choking
How do you not fear a guy who can choke you with his mind?
In the very first movie ever – Star Wars – a man stupidly opens his mouth to Darth Vader and he chokes him. Illustrating exactly what type of bad guy you’re dealing with in this movie. He’s even willing to kill his own people.
Then his little casual stroll away while the man is still choking. Such a casual display of power. Who wouldn’t be scared of a walking nightmare like that?
12 – Darth Vader VS Luke Skywalker
All of their fights are good, but I’m talking about the one in the Empire Strikes Back when Luke loses his arm.
I’m talking about this one because Vader is such a shit here.
His Anakin is showing!
He toys with Luke the entire time. Hiding and leaping, chucking things at him. Trying to lure him into a trap, but also enjoying causing chaos with his inexperienced kid fighting across from him. Leading to the moment when he lops off his son’s arm just like what was done to him so many years ago.
Trying to draw some parallel between them to prove to himself and his son that they are the same.
Except his son would rather leap to his doom than listen to his father for one more minute. Teen melodramatics anyone?
11 – Vader & Cloud City
Vader in Cloud City is an ass the whole time.
He enjoyed being a shit in this movie very much after the rebels blew up his Death Star, he’s enjoying screwing with them.
So much so he’s standing at the head of a fully decorated table waiting for them to arrive. He makes up his deal as he’s going along, irritation everyone. Torturing people without bothering to ask for information. Testing out his carbonite pit of doom on random prisoners and promising to give the bounty hunter money should he perish.
Darth Vader was just in the midst of being annoying shit this movie.
10 – Tossing the Emperor Like a Ragdoll
And the ultimate shit move is when he’s finally done with the Emperor.
Does he pull out his lightsaber? Does he Force choke him?
Nope.
He picks the Emperor up like he weighs nothing and just yeets him into a endless pit of doom before dying himself because that plan destroyed the suit – you know – keeping him alive.
What an extra thing to do Vader!
9 – ‘I was but a learner.’
Like what is this sentence?
In A New Hope, when confronted with Obi-Wan, Darth Vader feels the urge to brag about how far he’s come since the last time he saw his master. Which is either by a lava pit on Mustafar or something in Kenobi which I have not seen yet.
Like when I last saw you, you may have kicked my butt, but I promise you! This will be different!
Except it’s not. Obi-Wan allows himself to die and Vader only thinks he’s won when in reality he messed up. Again.
Guess you still have a lot to learn Vader.
8 – Vader Discovers Ahsoka
In the TV show about the Rebels, Ahsoka returns, and she along with another couple Jedi try to explore the mind of Darth Vader.
Only for none of that to go according to plan and for Vader to discover his former padawan lives.
And he’s like overly gleeful and enraged by this information with just makes me laugh so much. Like my dude, are you happy she’s not dead? No. He’s not. He’s not happy he trained her so well she survived all this time because now she has to die and he has to kill her and he doesn’t like that.
But he also can’t have anyone around to remind him or who he used to be and how far he’s fallen so she must be destroyed.
It’s all so dumb in terms of thinking and it suits one of the greatest villains in history as most of his choices leave little to be desired.
7 – Darth Vader VS The Rebels
But moments like this one and the next remind me what in light of his foolish choices that he’s terrifying.
The Rebels in the TV show on Disney were being hunted by Darth Vader and no matter what happened, he wouldn’t stop. They dropped large objects on him and he kept coming. Strong and cold in the Dark Side of the Force.
He overwhelmed them at every turn. Nearly destroying their entire army in one swift and crushing blow. He was more than they could handle on a good day. And he was ruthless and swift and merciless in his destruction of everything they were trying to build.
He was better with a lightsaber and he would exploit anything he could and all they could do was run.
In that episode, I know I’m supposed to be rooting for the rebels, but like damn. Vader’s display of power is why he’s so scary. Why he was the right hand of the Emperor for so long. He was good at it.
6 – Rogue One
This scene also demonstrates his incrediable power.
He cuts through the rebels and everything they throw at him like they’re not even there. Honestly, they should have walked away. It would have been moved effective and they would have lived longer.
They barely manage to keep him back long enough for Princess Leia to get the plans and for the first movie to begin.
Except he’s hot on her tail.
He’s right there at every move. Following closely and not at all deterred. He’s frighteningly good.
5 – Darth Vader VS Obi-Wan
Revenge of the Sith.
The Duel of Mustafar is filled with complexities as two former brothers battle it out for the fate of the universe. While neither of them are able to gave the advantage they need to truly win.
It’s a heart-wrenching fight.
One Obi-Wan doesn’t want while Anakin relishes in it.
He wants to destroy his former friend, while Obi-Wan tries to give every chance for his friend to come back, and in the final moments of the fight can’t bring himself to end his friend.
Which honestly would have been a kindness. Instead, he’s not as powerful as he should be and is forced to be the Emperor’s lap dog for the rest of his life. Not to mention, he’s confined to a suit that keeps him alive, and is bulky and hard to use because the Emperor wanted to keep him down.
Obi-Wan might have done the galaxy and his old friend a service by killing him.
4 – Darth Vader VS Ahsoka
This scene hurts more though.
We know Ahsoka goes into the fight going against Anakin, but she doesn’t. She has decided that Darth Vader is far too cruel and her master could never have fallen so far.
Unlike Obi-Wan who can clearly see his friend’s face and knows what’s happening, Ahsoka is kept in the dark until a moment reveals the truth.
And now she knows. Her master is gone. He’s buried far below this darkness consuming and given the chance, he’ll kill her for just having known him as Anakin. The pain on her face as he declares that she will die.
As she chooses not to leave him.
To stand with him no matter their fates.
It all hurts as so much happens in this scene and it was so well done.
3 – “Ahsoka!”
This very line as Darth Vader/Anakin calls out to Ahsoka on the Sith planet deserves a spot.
The layering of the two voices calling for her. Vader and Anakin mashed together. His slow turn as he reveals his half of his face through the sliced-up helmet.
The shock and dread coming over Ahsoka as she turns to look him in the eye.
His real eye.
The ones that used to laugh and joke and look at her with love and pride. The ones who taught her. A set of eyes she trusted with her life more than once.
She had just declared that Vader was too evil to be Anakin but with one word, he shatters everything.
His robotic voice combined with the same tone he used time and time again when he was annoyed with her.
Ouch.
It hurts.
2 – I Am Your Father
Thought this would be number one huh?
Wrong! It’s two!
Because it’s amazing! How could it not be?
Darth Vader, a truly evil man declares that he’s your father. That’s a shock of a lifetime right there. He’s firm and sure of this conviction and we learn that Darth Vader is actually Anakin Skywalker.
They aren’t two people.
They are one and people have been lying to Luke all this time. Hiding that this evil man he’s been fighting is actually his father, twisted and mangled by darkness.
How powerful of a moment.
1 – His Entrance
But the thing that takes number one, is the moment I remember watching on TV with my parents one movie night.
A New Hope opens with spaceships and one boarding the other.
They’re all dressed in white except this one guy, who dressed head to toe in black. His breathing is loud and he’s terrifying when he steps into the ship.
His hulking figure looks at the carnage around him and he carries on without a word as though he’s satisfied with the mess around him. Uncaring about the people on his side who have died or those who lost their lives opposing him.
He merely surveys the area to ensure he can walk through a clear path before carrying on, like it was just mud or an empty hallway.
As a child, he scared the crap out of me. No one should be that casual entering a scene like that.
Not to mention, I didn’t know what lightsabers were.
To me, he appeared to be the only entering the room unarmed. Casual and sure of himself in the middle of a battlefield while his men still had their weapons drawn and were trying to find something like cover.
Freaking scary as hell!
Thanks for reading!
