Vigil 2×06 – Review

Make no mistake, there are no winners here.

Firas isn’t wrong.

Out of everyone here, he definitely got the short end of the stick. I appreciated Kirsten’s apology to him before.

But truthfully, there was nothing she could say to fix it.

It was a simple truth. She used her power and leverage to get what she wanted to save Amy. Plain and simple.

Leaving Firas with an impossible choice.

Leading to his statement at the end.

And he isn’t wrong.

The ever helpful Grainger got what he wanted. He helped his country, no matter the costs.

He destroyed lives. He doesn’t care, because he protected his country as far as he’s concerned.

You can see it on his face.

He has no remorse for what he’s done.

And while he will spend life in prison, it isn’t enough. It’s a small consolation for what happened. People died.

Those families will never truly know what happened.

Because the UK can’t risk letting this knowledge become public news. It would hurt the country.

So those families sit and wonder, while one was wiped from the Earth entirely.

They’ll go to jail, but their actions with live on.

With no peace found for the victims.

Is that fair? Not in the least.

Is it real? Absolutely.

Amy and Kristen don’t revel in a victory. They revel in a small victory. Because the people will pay for their crimes.

Eliza doesn’t get to walk away after a few years.

Neither does Grainger. They’ll never be remembered for their service only their disgrace.

But does it really matter when they get what they wanted out of the deal? The impact is still felt by the world and allies. Did they change anything? Did they solve or fix anything?

They pay. But so did everyone else.

The world isn’t a better place.

Sure, they can’t do it again. But what happens when the next person in power feels like they did? When they cross the line? Because they always will.

Amy and Kristen sit with the hollow feeling. Knowing that what they did, didn’t really save the world or stop the bad people. It was just a hiccup.

And they’ll be lucky if their son ever knows about what they did.

They’ll be lucky if his kids know.

It’s a hollow conclusion to this season.

Truly.

But it’s a fantastic conclusion too. Sometimes, there are no good guys in a situation. Just people making the best of the bad choices they’ve been handed.

Grainger and Eliza put everybody into this position by abusing their power.

Now, Amy, Kristen, and MI5 are left to decide how to deal with what they have. They are not saints or heroes. Just people, trying not to make things worse for everyone involved.

The solution isn’t perfect and not ideal.

And I love that for the ending.

On a more personal note for the episode, I want to talk about Amy and Kristen.

I loved Kristen messing up just a bit by leaving her phone and getting caught by a murderer.

I love that Sutherland didn’t listen no matter how hard she tried. Sometimes, people just can’t hear you or won’t.

I loved that Amy rushed to her side and didn’t want to leave her until Kristen begged her too. Because she doesn’t want a world run by these assholes.

Honestly, who could blame her?

I love that she trusted Amy to catch them. That no matter what she would help the truth find a way out.

Even if it cost her everything. Her family was counting on her to do the right thing when no one else would. I loved that she strong-armed everyone into the right thing. Even if they didn’t want to hear.

She made them.

My favorite scene though – was the last one.

“It’s done. I’m coming home.”

Absolute perfection.

I have no other words for that moment. Just perfect. A wonderful close to the season and this storyline.

I hope there is another season to talk about at some point! Here’s hoping for a series three!
