NCIS: Hawai’i Serve and Protect – Review

NCIS: Hawai’i is back and some stuff is going down!

I mean, we start off with Lucy babysitting or, eh, excuse me, protecting some Russian arms dealer or what have you. Only to find out there’s way more to her than anyone first thought.

Who else thought the brother was trying to kill her?

I mean, it’s where my brain went.

Then a paint bomb goes off. Lucy and Jesse making a fine team right there.

Lucy is chosen to protect Tatianna, by Tatianna specifically. Which at the beginning of the episode to me, meant she wasn’t going to go home, and watch TV on the couch with Kate. A very cute little tidbit.

Tatianna likes Lucy, because she sees a connection between them.

She wants to defect.

Tennant runs it up the flagpole. Which is government speak for jerk you around for a while. Pretty sure.

Kai had a boring stint in the lobby. Almost ran out of oat milk. Harrowing moments there, Kai! I don’t know how you made it through.

Lucy comes to relieve him and the mysterious Canadian girlfriend is revealed to be Lucy Lane! I mean Captain Cold’s sister. No wait, Tim Bradford’s sister from The Rookie.

Oops, nope, Peyton List! I love when she randomly pops up in shows. She’s such a delight. Here, she is no different.

Kai smiles in a way we’ve never seen before.

She’s a war correspondent, so she’s got the inside scoop on Tatianna, oh and isn’t really here for a vacation. She’s here for work. And Kai. Totally Kai.

I loved Lucy right here. “Kai, I have questions.”

Me too Lucy, me too.

They were cute though, I’ll admit. Did I want to see them making out instead of our resident couple? No, not really.

Though I am happy for Kai.

However, I’m even happier for the rest of the team who finally discovered something about Kai’s personal life. And took great pleasure in utterly confusing him.

I love Tennant’s claim to know everything.

Because she does.

She does.

I don’t care for Sam Hanna’s elite NCIS team. It doesn’t matter. Make it a spin-off, just get him off this show. He’s unnecessarily shoehorned into places and taking screen time from the people I care about. Or just getting in the way of the plot.

Like, you needed Tennant to figure out that a man’s ego is fragile as hell?

She broke that guy in one session. Your ‘elite’ team isn’t feeling very elite.

Though I appreciate his journey to save Lucy out of loyalty. That’s one character trait I have to give him. If Sam’s on your side, he’s on your side – tenfold, 100%. I do enjoy that.

But dude, you took Tennant away, and Lucy was in danger!

I loved everyone freaking out over getting to Lucy. It was absolutely wonderful.

Personally, I enjoyed Tennant’s face when she realized how many people were hunting Lucy. I think there was part of her that knew Lucy would never go down without a fight. She was going to stand her ground and defend them until there was nothing left.

Which made it all the more important to get to Lucy.

Who dove for a gun out in the open. Yikes.

Thank you Sam and Jane for getting there in time.

Then there’s Kate.

Ah, Kate and the boys.

One thing I’ll say over and over about this show is how every dynamic between people is different. Every relationship is as unique as a fingerprint. Allowing for a lot of play and uniqueness amongst the storytelling. I really commend that part of the show.

Because the minute a very worried Kate appears in the war room, each boy there has already texted her.

Could you imagine being Kate at the FBI getting her phone blown up by the three of them to tell her that Lucy’s car was attacked?

Damn. She must have run the whole way there.

I loved the look on their faces as they realized they all texted Kate. I feel like there was some discussion off camera that it was going to be Jesse who texted. Because Kai and Ernie looked at Jesse so oddly, like sorry. We couldn’t help ourselves.

We needed to make sure she knew. Or they had already texted Kate by the time Jesse was like, I have to tell Kate.

I also loved how entwined Kate is to the team.

In season one, she mentions always feeling like the outsider. Never being the one invited for drinks. Even in season two, Tennant clarifies that Kate is family not because of Lucy, just because she is. She’s proven to be part of their team and family.

And the bonds Kate created while Lucy was away are apparent in every interaction, but are more so in moments like this.

When shit hit the fan, they contacted Kate.

She was in the loop from the start of Lucy going missing. She wasn’t some afterthought or footnote. Right, Lucy has a girlfriend, we should call her.

No.

It happened. Kate was contacted.

Not by one person. But by three. At least. We don’t know if Tennant called too.

I’m so used to the gay couple being left on the outside like Station 19. Where they’re never relevenet unless it moves the plot forward or the other characters. They’re never treated like a regular couple on the show.

But on this show, they’re treated like Kensi and Deeks. They’re given time and focus.

Even at the end.

Any straight couple would have had the scene at the end where you have one who has been worried to death over their love interest hugging them like their life depends on it. While we have another character point out that your person has been patiently losing it in the corner over there.

I loving this so freaking much!

It’s normal. It’s part of the show. It’s not a token to prove that this show is diverse. It just is.

So good.

All of Kate and Lucy’s scenes were good.

What is it with them and elevator conversations?

I loved Kate sticking her foot in her mouth, then pouting over not knowing much about Lucy’s family, and her advice that earned that smile. That damn smile in the elevator was so gosh darn cute.

Lucy was so touched by Kate.

I love this couple. I love this show. And I simply can’t wait for more. Thank you NCIS: Hawai’i for not only creating this couple, but treating them as important.

I only have one request going forward. Could they make out a little?

I mean, we got to see Kai make out. It’s only fair.

Just saying.
