Percy Jackson – The Prophecy Comes True

Even when I read the book, the thought of a 12-year-old challenging the God of War to a duel seemed nuts.

Seeing the size difference with actors and actual swords – I think Percy was conked on the head too many times.

And yet, somehow, he wins.

Despite all the odds, and everything in Ares’ favor – he wins.

The only thing I really have to say about the scene, was Ares’ face when the wave rose up, was amazing. He knew he fucked up.

But I do have a nitpick – isn’t this when Ares’ curse Percy?

Doesn’t he curse him so when he needs his blade most in battle, it will fail him? Is that another book?

I’ve said it before, it’s been a minute since I’ve read the series cover to cover, so I might be wrong. Someone help me out here. Am I wrong? If so, what book does that happen?

So Percy wins only to nearly open his mouth and nearly get himself killed later.

Percy, let’s not mouth off to the King of the Gods. I’m just saying. Dear ole’ Dad might not always jump in to save you.

Although, I did enjoy the scene very much.

Except I imagined the throne room to be a lot bigger and more golden. With thrones designed for each god individually, more like it’s described in the book. I missed that.

Poseidon is fantastic as he takes the hit to his pride, reputation, and ego in protecting his son. Not to mention, keeping the peace amongst the gods.

Poseidon chooses the high road for the sake of the future.

If they’re all fighting each other, it’ll be easier for Kronos to rise up and take over.

He’s smart. Smarter than Zeus. Who won’t let his ego allow him to realize Poseidon and Hades, did nothing to him. Instead, he wants to put on a show.

When really, he should be mad at Ares.

You know, the family who turned his back on you.

Jeez.

I enjoyed the little talk between father and son. As Poseidon realized there’s so much more to Percy.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Poseidon without roughly dismissing or summoning him. Damn dude. A little warning next time.

Percy returns to camp, hailed as a hero.

Annabeth and Grover are already there, safe and happy to see him.

Clarisse isn’t locked up, because she’s innocent.

Which Luke of course knows because he’s the thief. He wanted to start the war to weaken the gods because he hates them and he wants Kronos in power. Kronos has used his hatred and anger at the gods to turn him against them.

And he wants Percy to join him.

And as pointed out in the episode, Percy doesn’t entirely disagree with Luke.

In fact, they agree one quite a bit.

But Percy won’t betray his friends, the camp, or the gods because he knows the alternative is worse. Instead, he wants to make things better. Not destroy them.

He and Luke aren’t that far apart in their distaste for how the gods handle demigods or basically anything.

Except, Percy won’t become a monster to fight monsters.

So he refuses.

They fight and instead of being poisoned like in the book, which I was waiting for, the moment is changed.

Luke and Percy fight.

Percy is knocked down and when you think Luke is going to finish him off, a knife comes out of nowhere to stop him. Shocked, Luke finds Annabeth with her sword drawn, having heard everything, and willing to defend Percy.

This is a decided change from the books.

At first, I didn’t know what to think about it.

But the more I turned it over in my mind, the more I loved it.

Annabeth in the books, struggles to see Luke for what he becomes. Often because she never saw what Percy did firsthand.

Here, she sees it.

Here, her bond to Percy outweighs her bond with Luke at that moment.

Luke did something wrong to someone she cares about. He couldn’t twist his action or make it seem like it was something else.

This moment also parallels Percy’s fight with Clarisse earlier.

Annabeth was waiting in the wings in both. Hidden with her hat. She never intervened with Clarisse because he was fine, he handled it.

Here, she does.

Here, she realizes Luke is going to kill him or hurt him and Percy cannot handle it.

So she steps in.

I wonder if this will have an impact on Annabeth’s relationship with Luke, differently than the books.

She always thought she could reason with him in the books. That some part of him would listen to her. Come back to his senses. Yet he almost never does. Not until the end and it’s too late to save him.

In the series, Annabeth sees how far he’s fallen without his charade around her. She saw behind the mask he perfected for her.

Will it change things? Will her crush on his go away sooner? Will she double down on saving him?

I wonder.

Either way, the show ends sweetly.

The three promise to meet up next year. Annabeth is off to be with her dad. Grover has his searcher’s license. Percy has his mom back. Even though he still has nightmares, she’s right there with him.

But my favorite part is Smelly Gabe, turning to stone. Love the karma!
