Xena Warrior Princess – Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts

Is weird that I’m surprised Perdicas made it to the end of the episode alive?

I thought we killed off the male love interests around her.

Be grateful, Perdicas! You could have died if you got any closer.

If there’s something I love about this show, it’s how unhinged it is.

Let’s involve Xena in the Trojan War, because she’s old friends with Helen. Like what?

This is as nutty as let’s make Peter Pan a villain on Once Upon a Time.

Seriously, what is with all the old friends of Xena who seem to have no problem calling on a warlord? Xena was a vicious warlord prior to the series, right? But people call her for help? People that knew her before the series?

How long ago? Was she a warlord then?

What’s happening? Also, do I really care?

No, not really.

I love Xena just showing up because an old friend asked for help. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past. She’ll be there.

Love that.

Then there’s the unhinged charging of the gates of Troy.

If it wasn’t for Perdicas, how was she planning to get in? Was she going to scale the wall? Just bust through the door like the Kool-aid man?

I have so many questions.

I don’t even need answers, it’s hilarious just to think about.

Then we meet Perdicas.

Oh, was Perdicas always a sweet guy who was friends with Gabrielle? Because I decidedly remember her thinking he was an idiot and didn’t want to be controlled by him or her family.

Turns out, he’s nice.

Boring. But sweet.

I enjoyed him letting Gabrielle off the hook at the end. Very sweet.

Do I want to see him again? No.

Just like every other male love interest. They can die. Disappear. I don’t care.

Instead, I love watching Gabrielle and Xena together.

The sweet moment with the apple at the beginning. Gabrielle, claiming she doesn’t need to eat if Xena doesn’t, only for her stomach to betray her. And for Xena to put Gabrielle’s needs before her own. Very nice.

This show does a good job of illustrating how their relationship changes as they spend more time together.

They tease each other. They worry for each other, but it’s changing.

Xena didn’t feel the urge to put Gabrielle behind her at every turn. I know she had help from Perdicas, but I don’t really think Xena was worried. Sure, there was something shady happening, but it involved the royals.

Gabrielle has learned to fight, to protect herself. She’s in less need of protection.

But I also love that Xena teases her a bit.

The cute moment at the beginning showed a crack in her normal stoicism we haven’t really seen. She’s not overly joking or such, but she cracks a smile here and there for Gabrielle.

As for the overall plot, as I was watching it, I kept thinking about Legends of Tomorrow.

They had a story involving Helen of Troy as well.

Both shows, made the same point – Helen doesn’t matter to the war in the end.

After a while, the war ceased to be about Helen. Instead, it was about two male egos, and both of them being unwilling to lose. It didn’t matter whether Helen was there to claim as a prize. Victory over their rival would be enough.

It amazed me. Truly.

The same idea. Offered in two entirely different ways. With the same message, set what? 20 something years apart?

I think it’s a case of Xena being ahead of it’s time and our current society not moving forward enough. Either way, I loved the point.

Especially, the end. When Xena put the crown on that guy’s head and left him there. Loved it. Justice at it’s finest.

Then there’s Helen wanting to be treated normally for a while.

She’s had enough of this life. Time to take matters into her own hands.

I even loved Paris, realizing he’s been such a fool all this time. To lose sight of what he started this war for. To not see his brother was lying to him, tricking him.

Overall, a solid episode I enjoyed.

One last thing, I liked Gabrielle asking Xena if she wanted to keep the horse. And even better Xena’s response about having her lug it around instead.

So good.

And I would like a moment of silence for the wicker lawn chairs who gave their lives to make this episode happen.
