Stupid Wife: 1×04 – Review

Okay, who else when watching this through the first time thought the parents were lying?

I thought they were lying.

The whole thing was weird and didn’t feel right. Especially combined with a second watch through and I can clearly see Valentina’s guilty face as they talk.

However, that’s not even the most interesting thing that happens in this episode!

Given that Luiza goes full bitch on Valentina.

That entire scene is so painful.

From start to finish.

My heart breaks for Valentina ever time I watch it. Especially that moment when she puts her hand on her chest.

The little details each actress included in that scene is simply perfect.

Even Reis mentioned in the commentary that she purposefully put herself between Valentina and Duda and Igor so Valentina couldn’t sneak comfort from them was amazing. It was such a nice touch.

That scene felt so isolating for Valentina.

And I remember during the first watch, I kept wondering and even shouting out loud if Valentina was going to defend herself.

She just stood there.

Taking it.

So much shit from her wife.

Only to later discover it was her wedding anniversary.

Let that one sink in for an hour and you’ll wonder how Valentina was still alive at the end of the episode.

Imagine that! Imagine it for a moment!

Years ago, you were standing before the love of your life and you promised to love each other forever. In sickness, in health, for richer or poorer. You probably said a lot of heartfelt things to each other. Smiling, dancing, enjoying your romance, and drunk on your love for each other.

You’re supposed to remember that every year.

But this year… This time, your wife hurls terrible insults at you.

Is horrified to be married to you. (Seemingly.)

For goodness sake, if I was Valentina I would have crawled into my bed and just let the world go by.

I’m done, see ya, gots to go!

Damn.

Now, one thing I want to add is that I wish they had left the scene where the four of them are at the table together. It gave us a bit more background for why Luiza got so drunk.

Because during the first watch through I honestly thought her drinking and reaction were odd.

With the scene if makes more sense that Luiza was feeling ignored by Valentina, got drunk, and stupidly lashed out.

Otherwise, it comes off as out of character.

Especially, since we know as an audience Luiza just discussed with her therapist her attraction to Valentina.

I find it interesting that Luiza acknowledges her attraction to Valentina everywhere but around the people who care about her.

She won’t admit it to friends.

Not to Valentina.

But to herself, in her bedroom, watching videos. Sure.

To her therapist. Sure.

I did love the therapist’s advice to experience things. Though I did not originally expect it to end in a blowout like that.

Not to mention, Luiza steadfastly ignores that Valentina has been nothing but nice since she woke up without her memory. She’s followed her requests, taken care of her, and put up with a lot.

Valentina saying no because she was drunk was right in character.

Also, who else suspected that Valentina was pregnant when she refused to drink?

Now, for as much shit as I want to give Luiza for her behavior here – I also want to credit Duda.

Duda tired keeping the peace. Tried to stop her friend. Took care of the children. Helped search for Valentina. Worried after her.

But most importantly, she gave Luiza a piece of her mind.

I loved the line about just because she’s her best friend, doesn’t mean she’ll take her side.

Because you need people like that. That love you enough to call you an idiot when you need it most!

So thank you Duda!

Her speech in the kitchen was perfect. It was the right amount of tough love to get Luiza to listen.

I also adore Igor jumping to his sister’s defense and searching for her. Not to mention bringing her home.

His calm presence allowing his sister to say her peace was perfect.

He didn’t judge her for having had enough.

He just comforted her.

Even if he had no idea what to do either. Because you could clearly see it written across his face that he had no answers. He was at a loss to help his sister or sister-in-law.

I loved that moment between them.

I also loved that Valentina felt comfortable enough to finally give voice to her emotions.

Because she’s dealing with a lot too!

I don’t even blame her for being done. Luiza seemingly won’t even give her a chance.

I mean, if I woke up married to Valentina, (I’d be elated) but also curious about this woman. I’d want to get to know her, see why I fell in love, and married her.

After all, Luiza still made the choice to marry her. There must be a reason.

One last note!

I also don’t believe Luiza too much when she says she doesn’t care for Valentina. If she didn’t care she wouldn’t feel guilty. She wouldn’t have waited up, replaying the horrible words in her head. She wouldn’t have been checking her phone.

Luiza would have gone to bed if Valentina truly meant nothing to her.

But she didn’t.

And I think that says a lot.

Well, then see ya next week! Thanks for reading!
