Behind the Plate with Amac: Softball isn’t Baseball

Whoop, whoop!

Another wonderful Saturday to talk about softball!

Let’s talk about why softball kicks baseball’s butt, because make no mistake, it does.

For example, it has been proven that due to the smaller field softball is played on with the bases only 60ft apart and not 90ft apart, it’s actually more difficult than baseball.

Yeah, that’s right.

The reaction times from the ball leaving the bat and reaching the players is faster than baseball.

Taking away 30ft changes the game!

Not to mention, speed it up.

I’ll be honest here, I love baseball. I do. But it takes too damn long.

The new rules introduced to ensure the game is sped up was my favorite announcement of baseball yet!

A typical softball game takes an hour and half to play all seven innings.

Why do two more innings make games take four hours? What are you doing?

Want to know another way softball is superior, ladies?

Pitching underhand is actually better for your shoulder!

Throwing overhand at 100 mile an hour speeds hurts your shoulder over time. It’s part of why pitchers have pitch counts and rest days to ensure they don’t hurt themselves.

Unlike softball pitchers.

Sure, we keep track of pitch counts but it doesn’t mean as much to us.

Pitchers don’t abuse their shoulders because pitching underhand takes on a natural movement.

One of the other major differences and why softball is superior is leading.

We don’t get any major leads like they do in baseball. They can walk a country mile down the baseline for all anyone cares. Jeez.

In softball, we can only leave the base once the pitcher begins moving.

Combined with the smaller field, I’m fairly certain trying to steal is a whole different animal.

Also, let’s face facts people – women are just tougher.

Every sport women are practically bleeding or have limbs hanging off, but if you get a hangnail in baseball, it’s off to the injured list with you.

I once played with stomach issues. Another girl I knew played with a broken finger. Another took a ball to the face and kept playing.

Even a male coach of mine admitted women play sports differently, we play for those beside us inside of the name on our uniform like men do.

Women are wired differently when it comes to sports.

Honestly, it’s scary and amazing.

I do mean no offence to men, you’re allowed to be hurt, and need time off. I’m just saying, in my experience women will run through fences before they quit.

Damn.
