Pride Couple – Xena & Gabrielle

Sanvers was the first ladies loving ladies I shipped and helped me to understand myself. And Xena and Gabrielle are my latest obsession.

Why did no one tell me about this show?

Seriously!

I started watching it, and while I plan to an episode by episode review on the show, I can’t not feature this couple during Pride Month.

Also, I cannot stress enough how ridiculous it is, that this show is still so relevant to LGBTQ community nearly 30 years later.

Xena and Gabrielle are soulmates.

While the show was unable to portray them in an actual romantic relationship on screen without restrictions due to the time it was produced, the show did an incredible job of navigating the boundaries and ignoring them when it could.

Over the course of six seasons, Xena and Gabrielle go through what they call hell together.

But the thing I love most, is that despite their relationship being forced into the subtext and eventual text, they’re clearly together and love each other so much.

Seriously, try to convince me these two weren’t a couple.

My parents watched this when it aired. I asked them about it, as I made my way through season one. Like did you notice the relationship between Gabrielle and Xena isn’t just friendship.

My Dad laughed and said he thought I’d like that when I discovered the show was gay AF. He completely agreed that they were romantic and thought so then.

My Mom even admitted she found their relationship dipping into the romantic at times when she first watched it. Thinking back, and listening to me talk about it, she was like, yeah, that really was gay.

Now, as for the couple…

The thing that stands out most of all for me is the idea of Xena and Gabrielle choosing each other over and over again.

Every time. Without fail.

Seriously, this is the kind of relationship most people long for.

Think about it for a moment.

They have seen each other at their worst.

They have been through unimaginable suffering and pain and literal death and hell together, for each other, and to be with each other.

But they’re so f*cking normal too!

As Gabrielle loses the hero-worship glasses, we see their daily lives together turn into a normal state of affairs.

They argue over cooking, broken frying pans, stolen shirts, each other’s stuff, they prank each other, they giggle, they fight, and so on.

These are normal everyday spats people have with people they love.

Not everything is wonderful declarations of undying love.

Which – don’t get me wrong – they have in spades as well and is wonderful.

For me – what sets them apart – are those moments.

Who doesn’t want to know that no matter who else comes along, they’ll still choose you?

Lucifer, Ares, or some random dude from history will get between them.

Flirting and a kiss from someone else isn’t important. It never matters or fazes them because they know at the end of the day, they’ll choose each other.

I know some people have commented that it’s an open relationship or the network wanted a beard.

The truth is – I don’t care what you pick to explain them.

It doesn’t matter.

For one simple reason – they are soulmates.

They will live countless lifetimes together. They will be together in death, in life.

To me, neither Xena nor Gabrielle cared by the time we got to season six about little dalliances. No one was going to replace them.

They would love each other forever.

Who could compete?

I do believe Gabrielle was a bit more unsettled in her position in Xena’s life until season six. Once we pass the Rheingold storyline, where it is literally confirmed that they’re soulmates (again.) Gabrielle isn’t bothered by Ares anymore.

Isn’t bothered by anything.

She’s completely comfortable in the knowledge that she is Xena’s and Xena is hers.

Who wouldn’t want a relationship like that?

To know beyond a shadow of all doubt that you will always be together? Find each other? Love each other?

It’s a level of love and intimacy that is wonderful.

Honestly, even though not a lot of text was able to be placed on the forefront, the writers, and actresses did a wonderful job with what they had to work with.

If you’ve never seen this show, it is a must!
