NCIS: Hawai’i – Dies Irae

Yes, I’m aware I’m late with this review! I’m terribly sorry, life got away from me!

So, without further ado!

I don’t want LL Cool J’s character from NCIS: LA. Nope.

Though I did enjoy his appearance and his scenes with Tennant in the crossover, I do not want him around full time. I think he’ll mess with the chemistry too much.

Which as this episode shows, is wonderful as is.

Kate was a badass! Speaking Spanish!

But the one thing that bothered me for days after watching this episode was Tennant.

I know I said in my last review that Tennant becoming a long wolf when it comes to her CIA days makes all the sense in the world to me. And I stand by that. I do.

What confused me is after returning home and being saved by Kate why she continued on alone.

Then it hit me.

Everything links to what Tennant stand to Jesse.

She would never ask him to put his life on the line for her.

Even knowing that her people would risk everything for her, she doesn’t want to ask that of them.

Tennant loves her family.

So much she would risk everything herself to protect them. And so she does.

She puts all the risk on herself. She lets Maggie wander around. She confronts the bad guy alone. She leaves her family in the dark to protect them. To give them plausible deniability when asked what really happened. So they would be just as confused as Swift.

It made sense when that line clicked into place for me.

This episode wasn’t about Tennant trying to clean up a mess from long ago because of her old job. This episode focused on keeping her family safe.

I still don’t like or trust Swift.

He may not have been involved in the plot against Tennant, but I still don’t like him. I can’t discern where his motives are.

He says he wants to uphold the rules, but he broke them for Tennant.

He says this team is good, but wants to add another person to it.

Why? What does he gain? Will we see more of him going forward? What does he want?

If anyone has theories, let me know!

Now onto the other thing I want to discuss – Kate Whistler.

During the last season finale, we had Kate worrying over Lucy. This year, we got Lucy worrying over Kate. Le sigh. How perfect.

All of their scenes were adorable, and way more than I expected for a season finale in a mainstream show.

I didn’t at all expect Lucy’s worry to be so centered around where her head was for part of the episode. She couldn’t focus on work or Tennant or anything but Kate’s safety. Nothing else mattered to her.

I loved how everyone didn’t even try to stop her either. They just worked around her worry or tried to refocus her.

Also, I would like an explanation on why Lucy thought Kate didn’t speak Spanish, when she spoke it well enough to communicate with a local.

Kate channeling her inner badass was wonderful.

Personally, I would have liked a bit more of the rescue to have come from her, but I love what we got regardless.

Lucy and Kate reuniting with the hug for all to see is so far from where we were last year.

Last year, Kate was still coming to terms with being out in front of people.

In this episode, we saw her barely flinch when Lucy flirted with her openly in front of everyone in the midst of dangerous situation. Lucy hugged her and made her promise in front of everyone not to run off like that again.

Such growth.

I love it.

Kudos to the actresses and the writers for displaying this journey so prominently.

They have made it feel part of the story inside of something they shoved in to check off a box. Kate and Lucy are part of the main storyline and I’m always a little surprised when they’re treated as such.

When they’re given screentime like any other couple, it reminds how far we’ve come.

There’s still more to do, but I applaud these writers for making it feel effortless. As well as the actors who treats it the same way as Kensi and Deeks.

Love it!

Next, I want to talk about Kate and Tennant.

This season the writers juggled a lot, including one of their actresses leaving for a time to shoot something else. Instead of making it feel like a chore, the writers rose to the occasion, and took the chance to write something amazing.

With Lucy gone, Kate could have easily been pushed to the side. Treated like nothing more than a family member’s girlfriend they check on, once and a while.

Instead, the writers jumped at the chance to illustrate that Kate is part of the family.

Tennant stressed it in an episode where Kate was featured.

It was proven time and time again.

Especially as Kate and Tennant bonded differently.

While I don’t think Kate and Tennant are at Maggie and Tennant levels of friendship, I do think this has the chance to be more important.

I’ve said it before, I think Kate replaced that connection in Tennant’s life.

Tennant barely batted an eye when Kate showed up. She looked impressed and pleased, but not surprised her friend came looking and found her.

I also adored the conversation Kate had with Lucy about it in the hallway.

She loves Tennant.

She didn’t need any reason beyond her family needing help to show up for her, no matter what.

Kate knew she freaked Lucy out. But she also knows there is nothing she could have done differently. I loved that she didn’t want to lie to Swift so she avoided him.

Also, I love that Lucy was a little offended on Kate’s behalf that she didn’t get to hear the whole story. But I loved that Kate didn’t need it.

She would do it for Lucy. For Jesse. For Kai. For Ernie. For her family. No matter what.

Also, Lucy please share the list of reason you love Kate!

Where was loyalty before 83?

What is in the top ten?!!

My goodness, send me all the fanfics on this topic please!

Whew! A lot happened this season and maybe I’ll do a season wrap-up on my thoughts about season two of this show at some point!

Either way, I thank you for journeying through season two with me!
