10 Reasons Why Spring Doesn’t Suck

1. Baseball/Softball Season Starts

Finally! Spring is here and my favorite sports’ seasons start!

When I was little, it meant we were no longer trapped in gyms and domes with roofs that aren’t high enough and balls bouncing off walls trying to kill us.

We would have space again!

I would be outside in the sun again! Instead of under horrible lights in gyms and lights never bright enough in the dome!

I’ll be off to baseball games, hopefully at Fenway, or at my local baseball stadium. I don’t care either way. My favorite sport is back on TV and in stadiums, backyards, and local fields.

See ya.

2. Motorcycle

Another reason to cheer for spring.

Warmer days, more sunshine, and that means more time to go motorcycling.

Yes, I have opted to try all year round, but spring means layers will be shedding. More time in the sun, more time on the bike.

And like most bikers, I’ll do anything to stay on my bike just a little longer.

3. Sunshine

Spring forward means I’m not constantly shuffling around in the damn dark.

Is anyone else sick of going to work and coming home in the dark?

Or trying to do anything outside and having the sun set on you in ten seconds?

Last week, I remembered I could still go outside and enjoy the sunshine at seven at night after dinner. I cheered and went out to my backyard. Yes!

4. Warmth

While the spring causes warmer days to be somewhat fleeting – they’re still more frequent than the winter.

It’s a slow burn of warmer days, where each one must be cherished. In the spring, you’re never sure when the next nice day or warm day will come.

Each and every one must be savored and enjoyed.

You’ll look for any excuse to go outside on a nice day.

A walk around the block? Sure!

Five trips to take in the groceries? Why not?

Anything to be outside on a nice day. You’ll drive with the windows open or offer to go drop off something or fetch coffee for everyone at work, just to feel the sunshine for a few extra minutes.

5. Pets

In combo with the warmth and somewhat better weather, with things on an upswing, it’s so much better to go outside with the dog.

Or go to the pet store.

Suddenly, those chores don’t seem so bad when you make an extra trip to the pet store just to enjoy the weather.

Walking the dog isn’t as much of a hassle as you’re not bundling yourself and your little one up so much just to collect a bag of his poop.

6. Plant Life

While the returning growth of the plants usually bothers the heck out of me, the end result is hard to argue with.

One thing I love beyond all reason are the trees in my backyard. In the afternoons of spring and summer, they provide the perfect shade from the setting sun.

I love laying the pool and listening to them sway. I find it peaceful. Ever since I was little and my family used to go camping on the weekends. We’d find ourselves surrounded by trees there and I loved them.

I love nature and being outside when the weather is nice.

The flowers, the trees, the smell of fresh cut grass… sigh.

It’s all so lovely.

7. Children!

Across the street from my house is a park.

Every year as the weather gets nicer, we know spring has arrived in my house, not by the calendar or Daylight Savings or when the weather turns – we know it by the sound of children playing outside.

Every year without fail, the park is overflowing with kids from the beginning of spring all the way to the end of fall.

Basketball, the sound of swings, children running, giggling, and shrieking with joy fill the neighborhood.

It’s one of the best sounds in the world.

I love it so damn much.

Every time I hear a ball crash through the hoop or hear kids driving their power wheels down the sidewalk with that distinct crunching of plastic wheels on pavement, it brings a smile to my face.

There is nothing more sweet than seeing neighborhood kids come together someplace safe to have a ton of fun together.

It’s the soundtrack of spring, summer, and fall.

8. Windows

All winter long, your house or apartment is closed up.

We turn the heat way up and keep ourselves bundled up. Everything is locked up tight. No cold air allowed.

Ah, but in spring.

In spring, one of the first things you get to do is open the windows. The sounds of the world filter in, making you feel like you’re less alone in this world because you can hear fellow humans living their lives.

Like the kids across the street from house.

The house gets some fresh air and it feels like a start of something new and good. Like you’re rejuvenated everything.

9. Layers

After all winter, bundling up with a thousand layers trying to keep warm or having to remove layers and deal with them no longer attached to you, I’m sick of them!

By the time spring hits, I’m over it.

It’s fine in the beginning, bundling up is nice. You’re warm. You get to mix and match a lot.

But then, it gets old.

So many clothes to wash. You’re sick of carrying around spare layers for the snowstorm or dealing with the hat or gloves or earmuffs.

There is so much stuff.

Finally, spring has arrived, and you can shed some layers. Is it an exact science?

Nope.

But it’s usually less layers than winter.

10. Spring Cleaning

This is your chance. You’ve been stuck in the house with that damn couch all winter. And you hate it.

It’s lumpy, ugly, and old.

Time for it to go.

But the winter was too cold to do something like that.

However, spring is here. And with it, time to get rid of the shit that bothered you all winter. Things you put off because it was too damn cold to do. Now, it’s time to get rid of that clutter.

Just in time for you to not be in your house much with all the warmer, sunnier days coming.

Either way, it’s a good time of year to reevaluate what you do and don’t need anymore.
